There were a lot of unmarked heads made by premium axe makers for resale by local hardware chains who put their own label on them.. I've found many nice axes with no maker's stamp including several with those ridges in the eye that you see on some premium axes. The resale value of a no-stamp axe will be lower but it might still be a very good or even premium axe.

Agreed Pegs, it's just that from a 'Collectors' standpoint, I just like to have marked heads.
I've got that one old paper label 'Kelly' which is cool, but it's not a user.
I wish I had more heads with paper labels.
Have you seen that 'NOS' paper label 'Plumb' broad axe on that auction site?
It's NICE

You're right, Bear. There's no collector value in no-stamp axes. Which makes them perfect users!

I agree with both of you. I have a lot of good axes of unknown parentage, and the file tells me when I've got a dud (probably only 2 in all). But since I've got more axes than I will ever need, I try to focus a bit as a collector rather than just buy everything I see. High character and low price will still win me over though.

About the no names I have found them to be good also. Has anybody noticed if the premium stamps are better than the standard? Like Plumb champions vs plumbs or Kelly vs kelly perfect? Other?

Good score. Is that little Plumb a boys axe? Them boys axes are so dang handy. I wish I had more of them, but they make such nice gifts for friends that camp.

yep, boys axe. looks like the bit is pretty ground down. it might not be useable, but we'll see...

Unmarked 3.5# double bit and Genuine Norlund hudson bay head with what looks like original paint and original sticker mark

I've seen those stamped "Manufactured by Colonial Axe & Tool Co" with the Liberty Bell.

I havent been able to go looking for axes much over the winter but the antique fair was in Charlotte this weekend so I killed afew hours down there this morning. Picked up this Keen Kutter double bit.

I first thought it was a cruiser but after getting it home and comparing it to my Belknap cruiser, this one is has a full size eye and is on a 30" haft.
The old butcher knife had about an inch broken off the end and was on the $5.00 table. I spend about 5 minutes re-profiling and will put teh final edge on it after I figure out what I'm going to do with it, finish wise. I had thought about putting osage orange scales on it to match my big Foster Brothers cleaver, but the walnut scales on it cleaned up nice.

Nice job on that knife-point.

I've never gotten to play with a Champion. I just got another one of these Plumb Au-to-graf that are supposed to be premium - we'll see what the file says but the eye was forged very thin on one side.

"The Au-To-Graf etching was used on a line of axes considered to be of the highest quality." (yesteryearstools)

The bit is nice and long this time though :)

Both of those are very nice finds
How did that Plumb 3^2 get by me
I've got a Plumb '4', but no 3^2 :(
I want to get one and out it on a 28" handle that u have, just to see how well she performs.

Sneeksy we are:tickled_pink:

The head is deceptively broader than it looks in the pic and makes the handle look short - it is a full 34" (counting the head).

Someone just Sharked an L.L Bean Hudson bay from me on the bay, the thing looked near mint besides a ding on the handle. I'm crying right now ..lol
That's ok though I have a few Norlund single bits I'm looking at, hoping to get lucky on at least one of them. Soon to be posted IF I get lucky.
I love seeing the stuff you guys find and restore, its amazing what you can turn some of these things into once you clean them up.
Thanks for all the inspiration and info guys.
