Too bad about the mushrooming, the wedging, and the haft, but still a nice stamp (after the buyout but before the shutdown, apparently). Head is 4 lb 2 oz on my bread scale.

Also got a nice 6-lb cross-peen hammer at the same sale.

Here is what I found this week end. Bearings are not to bad on this one. Dang hard to find them with the drip cup. Wheel is very nice and round. I will sell my other one for sure.

I might go with this frame, not sure yet.

Been looking for one of these in good shape for awhile now. Not crazy about the polish but it is a nice head, 6lb.

I picked up a decent Connecticut pattern off the auction site. The poll was mushroomed a little, but not too bad. Spent a little time re-shaping the poll and getting a haft ready. I decided to go with an octagonal curved haft.

The axe head is 3.25 pounds. The haft will be 36", but seems shorter because of the large swell. The haft is an Ames, True Temper. I'm pretty impressed with the Ames TT handles.

Sweet Plumb Autograph. Like you say, it's too bad they went wild with the angle grinder on it. Still a great axe and a big sumgun!

Got some good looking axes on here as of late. Keep em coming.

Here is a question - I see a lot of guys removing the mushrooming on axe heads - why? Functionality? Appearance? Just wondering. I usually just let it go depending on the use of the axe.

That's an excellent question. As of now, I don't worry about it either.

Mushroomed steel is more prone to cracking. An errant piece could fly at your eye. Granted this isn't likely unless you're striking something with the poll. But if you had to use the poll in a pinch you'd want it to be safe to use. Also, a mushroomed poll can hang up when splitting large rounds.

Has anyone tried reshaping the polls by applying heat and pounding the mushroom back into the original shape? Myself stay well clear of badly deformed heads right from the start but I guess if someday I were to find a real prize my thinking might change.

My grandfather had a mushroomed chip hit him in the thigh. The doctors chose to leave it in place because it was close to the bone. It caused the biggest bruise I've ever seen. It must have been similar to being shot with a .22.

Snagged these at the local flea market yesterday. Axes have been scarce for a while around here !

apparently used the wrong link. Trying again.

Very nice older man gave me these for $0.10 !

Also...any idea about this little single bit. Stamped with SWEDEN on it.

What a score!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the adze and the twibils. Love the augers, too, especially the ones with the handles. And I'd like to try one of those Kent pattern hatchets.

Thanks peg. The gentleman who passed these down to me was a ship and barn builder , using traditional techniques . I was very lucky !

Not as nice as some of the ones I've seen in here, but this Collins head was a pick up from the auction site to try my hand at my first re-handle. I fired the handle, which was bought at a small lumber yard here local. Is a US made Hickory piece according to the label.

This followed me home today, a 6-1/4" blacksmith's leg vise. It weighs 142 pounds on my bathroom scale. My old 6" only weighs 85.

Nice vise and floor-plate.
I finally found a True-Temper (Tommy) Dynamic Hatchet. I would now have all three, except I traded away the Tommy Tomahawk.
