Hi Guys,

I been looking at the awesome stuff in this thread.... I see that many of these axes are returned to work, and many are placed into a collection... I also noticed that many of these fine pieces have beautiful wood with heavy grain... That sort of thing makes me drool a bit...

I am new to forging, but am not new to other things like rifle stocks, and casting my own bullets and lead. I would love to put a finish like this on a collectable piece........ Take a look at this thread in my cast boolit forum... I would post pics here, but cant upload, only gives me the option of linking... And photos exist on my Ipad.

I would love to give this a try with an old grainy piece of wood, but living remote, there are no hardware stores nearby....

These were from an old farmer with a garage full of tools and stuff he was getting rid of. Paid 20 bucks for the lot, toolbox included.

I picked up this Ox-Head for $20 a few days ago.
It had a lot of surface rust but overall in great condition. I believe it's a small forest axe head? The bit measures 4in and is arround 2lbs ( I don't have a scale ) It's got a nice hard heat treat

Nice! That head should produce a nice 'fine crystal'-like ring to it when tapped. Whatever this means I don't know but most axe heads only generate a dull 'thunk' when you tap them. The maker of that head and the detail of the stamp is featured if you scroll down the thread on 'Ardex' axes from a few weeks ago. Mineral exploration field crews often carried these up in the north because they are handier than a hatchet and smaller than a regular axe.

There are two different tools called log dogs. One is to hold a log while hewing it, the other is for chaining logs together to make an enclosure (raft) to transport logs down river to the mill. That one is in the latter group. A Mann and a log dog for $5 is a steal. :D
