Well i didnt buy it but I inherited it from my grandfather this past weekend. I took it apart wire wheeled it, cleaned and serviced it.
Its in very good condition for its age and still works well. it was my great grandfathers, then my grandpas, and my dad let me have it. Will be making a stand for it soon. i used to use it alot when it was at my grandfathers attached to his old work bench.
I left the paint and stains on it, i like the character and patina from it all.
Not sure of its time period and it has no identify mfg marks. Looks like a peter wright with the bell shaped housing
late 1800's early 1900's???

Suh-weeeet! What is that, about a 4" jaw?

A post vise is a super handy thing to have. Mine holds my axes for filing.

I'm still looking for a good vise for my shed/shop; I have to get creative with multiple clamps. I'm jealous PWR.

I'm jealous Peg, I'd love to get my hands on a grinder like that. Hell, I'd settle for just the stone and build a jig to hold it myself.

I've got a spare 20" stone I might part with........
Decent shape and on an axle.

It was a pleasure meeting you today, Alocksly. Say, you're a tall feller. Full head higher than I and I'm 6'. Here's that grinder design I mentioned.

Couple of newbies. Warren double bit axe eye maul. After a recent thread on splitting maul eye types I decided I wanted to try one of these.

The other is a Collins branding axe from an old logging operation here in the NW. It's a 4 pound rafting pattern. The axe is in pretty nice shape but the brand or stamp is a little banged up. It's the letter 'Z' with a cross bar.

I think most logging crews had them - usually home made. I've seen some hammer-based branding tools that appeared to have been factory made. I'd say they're not rare but they are uncommon.

Neat that there are home-made branding/stamping tools out your way. Rafting of timber down the Ottawa River was big (as in huge) business here and JRBooth and the other 1900th century lumber Barons did not leave it to chance about having their logs butt-marked via something home-made. If possible I will get some pictures of 'brand hammers' from here. They were apparently regarded much like coin plates at the mint because of the distances the logs travelled from forest to market, or to brokers at Port of Montreal.

Two mint never touched SAGER puget sound fallers
One Collins Legitimus with embossed paper label with center missing (unused)

These are so mint I will have to post better pics.

Well when I first saw them it was only going to run me about 138 for all three,,, but we all know how that works in the end. Before the night was over the guy that
had these had about 100 emails, so needless to say in the end My dad and I ended up paying about 130 each. A little more then our usual pay but what do you do ?
if you want something you have to pay sometimes. I actually could not sleep thinking that someone else may get them , you just don't see these in that kind of shape. I mean I have
lots of nice fallers axes but not like these .

Just thinking that this guys Grandad some how just put these away somewhere wrapped up for all these years . I mean you guys know the game these aren't like collecting Royal Daulton figurines that go
strait into the glass case ... these were meant to be used.

An old school chum of mine had a yard sale a goodly 20-some years ago to clean out his deceased grandfather's estate and that's how I wound up with this sledge. Mr Balchin was born during the Victorian Era had been a Lockmaster on the Rideau Canal during the 1920-30s. His kit contained numerous log-building and wood construction tools (bark spuds, Peavey, augers etc) and I was content to go home with a shipwright's adze, sledge, bunch of Sheffield chisels and a unique coal shovel with a one piece ash D-handle. The large river doors at any of the 2 dozen locks along the 100 mile long Rideau Canal were (and still are) constructed of multiple 18"x 18" x 20' Douglas Fir timbers. Today these timbers are custom milled and handled by crane but back then were hand-hewn and custom-fitted. Lockmaster was a prestigious government career and likely as not Dominion of Canada would have outfitted their shops with best British and Canadian tools. The head is inscribed 7lb Solid Steel British crest with Crown W.Gilpin

Thanks for giving out straight goods on these finds. Perpetually we are subject to 'fishing story'-exaggerated gloating about $5 steals. Price for collectible NOS dbl bit heads sounds perfectly honest and realistic to me. Hopefully you or the Estate don't fall pray to some of these vultures when the time comes.
