Jackass registry

....Now if someone can figure out how to make Donkey into a smiley we can just add him to our posts when we are being a ass so we can be ignored if need be:D  :D

Bruce

I think that would be a great idea, Bruce. I hope Spark will consider something like that. It could be sort of a step above foot-in-mouth.

We'll have to create a special category for you folks who started in 1999. Fossil JA, Grampa JA, Jurassic JA, etc. Maybe JA Emeritus for those who don't post as often as they used to, but who's input is still highly regarded. :)

I would encourage others to help suggest a good name for you Ancients!

This reply may rate me as a new and ignorant jackass and someone who still has trouble reading the nuances of the long timers. I would say to everyone who has volunteered for the designation, rate yourself on a scale of one to ten. Then divide by 2. None of you are half as bad as you would like to admit. Fitz you can divide by 10. You are not one tenth as bad as you describe yourself. In fact, you are an amazing person from what I know, and a wonderfull wealth of knowledge. Given the company, I would be proud to be known from now on as a jackass.

Diggerdog, you're right. We're not a bunch of total jackasses. Matter of fact I personally think we're actually a bunch of pretty decent people. Perhaps a bit more rough around the edges at times than other "Shop" forums. But, to be honest, I like it that way and it's why this is "home" for me. This big bunch of jackasses has helped a whole lot of people with knifemaking info. I have made some very good friends here, who i have a lot of respect for.

It's obviously important for us to distinguish between what's fun jackass behavior and what's downright mean and thus undesirable. I had a hard time distinguishing between the two a couple days ago and have made a blushing jackass out of myself as a consequence.... :o

To paraphrase a commercial, we've "all got a little jackass in us". Like the caveat at the end of the commercial, we have to do it responsibly. Tracy probably summed it up best in post #30.

Dan made a great point, too. Sometimes you get a scary wakeup to just what the consequences can be of being a jackass without even knowing it. I'm very happy for my friend that his missus straightened him out before it got past critical mass. A good spouse is a true Gift from God, and periodically we need a very swift kick to make sure we realize.

I am glad people responded to my assinine thread. I personally think a thread like this occasionally is a good thing. Blow off some steam, "have some fun, fart, belch, good male bonding stuff." :) (I think I got that last bit from Mickley. Thank you Tracy. Succinct!)

this would be a good time for some trolls to drop in  :D kick some troll bogie eating a$S hehehe :D

Dan, that's ok. I know what I am! I grew up knowing I'm an AH.

When I was a kid, starting at about 7-8 years old I heard constantly from my Ma, "You're the same AH your Grandfather is!" He was surly, ornery, cussed mean to almost everyone. Now, I was my Grandpa's only blood grandson. He had a sharpening and metal shop in his late years, and was already 70 when I was born. I spent a lot of time in that shop with him, and we loved each other deeply. He was never once mean to me. I might'a been the only person ever he was like that with. I'm utterly certain that's where I got my passion for messing up steel.

When my Ma used to tell me that frequently, she used to get even more pissed at me, because I was just overjoyed to know I could be like Grandpa. If being an AH was what he was, then I wanted to be one, too. I think I carried on the legacy ok. :D

He died when I was 14. It was harder seeing him go than my parents. I'd gladly have given ten years off my life to be able to show him what I could do in my shop. :) I like to think he'd be proud.

I know this is all fun and games here, but in truth, I've never met a kinder more considerate, gentle man than Mike Fitzgerald, on or off the forums.

Were that we were all a little more like him, it would indeed be a kinder and gentler internet and world.

Yes, you are definitely an Ancient Jackass. You came into the forum with quite a headstart on being an ahole, though, didn't you? I don't know if that's totally fair, then. ;) You are the first person I have ever met where their redeye enveloped their entire being....
:D :D

Mike, those are awfully kind words and I am grateful. Sincerely humbled; maybe even embarassed. :o Thing is, I think the same applies to you; you've always had my respect because of your ethic. You were the first person ever responded to me on the Internet over on what was then CKD. Everything since is your fault. ;) I have no problem being nasty when I think it's appropriate, but I sure as hell don't want to hurt anyone's feelings unintentionally.

We all have a darker side. I have a substantial list of regrets. My philosophy is that, as we perfect being an AH in our earlier years, the goal later in life should be to recognize those things and try to be a better person. I know you feel the same, even if we express it with different words.

Matter of fact, I even think that McNasty IG is a much better person than he'd want anyone to know. There's absolutely no one here who I've seen invite more people over to teach them. Thinking about it, though, maybe it's just some gay ploy he uses to get male company. ;) Easier than cruising the gay bars; goodness, you can get shot in one of those in New Bedford.

Actually, Dan, I was thinking he turned the knob ok, but he came out backwards, stuck. :D

I love George. There's absolutely no person in my world it is more fun to pick on. And the pig sucks it right up and gives it right back. That's what fun is all about. :)

Hey! An attitude like that makes me a jackass, don't it? :p :o

Knowing which end of the Jackass to listen to, is the trick. Figuring out which end is doing the talking can be a challenge. Both ends are verbal. One just makes a little more sence. Fred

Fred, I keep coming back to that statement. It may contain the most concise wisdom of anything I've read recently. :)

I wonder a lot about which end I'm using. Hard to tell; breath smells the same on either end. :D
