June 2008 San Jose "Chop Fest"

Someone asked about which blades worked the best, and I don't recall reading an answer. Anyway, from what I observed, the FBMs and FSHs ruled the day. Oh, and the swords did, too. I used one of my Sarsquatches, and it was a challenge to get through the (obviously petrified ;) ) 2x4s, though I finally succeeded. My wrist is still aching today from that. :grumpy:

The watermelons were in fact eaten. This was a west coast gathering not one of those metro sexual east coast things. No tea was consumed from bone china with extended pinky fingers. We eat, we chopped. Hell a few boards fell apart from shear terror.

My wife after hours of exposure to all that testosterone is concerned she my begin to grow a mustache.

*THIS* gets my vote for "Most Artistically Posed Extemporaneous Phrasing During a Thread Involving Serious Chopping."

Fine work, sir.

I'm sure you are going to have a good chopper face when you use that Silent Knight.

Thanks again for hosting it Ban!
It was a great time.
Thanks for posting the pics everyone!

It does have that smatchet shape. I was wrong about the model though, as was pointed out.:o

If it was smatchet sized, I would have one already :D

BRKT Clax - Overall Length: 16 Inches Blade Length: 10.5 Inches Blade

Smatchets were around 16"-16.5" AFAIK. Not sure what the weight was on the smatchet, but the Clax is around 22 oz. I only bought it because of the darn Short Sword thread with all the smatchets in it.

That is interesting. . . Larger than it looks in the pics. Might be time to start pinching some pennies. How well does it cut and chop?

Gentlemen, you have re-discovered something Japanese swordsmiths and swordsmen discovered centuries ago. Cool, ain't it? :D

Monsieur Ban -- I 'demand' a detailed review of the performance of the awesome FABM! I will accept no excuses!!:thumbup:;)

Hmmm. I think "Chopper Face" (courtesy of HogWash) may have to enter the Busse lexicon. I'm betting a whole lotta grunting and oinking went on!

OP,

The FABM performed as expected. It can hang right in there with the heavy weights. Check out the pics and the vids. It went through the 2X4 in about 11 or so chops while the much heavier FBMLE did it in 9. What it lacked in weight it made up for in speed and velocity. It was so fast that you can hardly even see it in some of those pics :D To be fair I wasn't really trying all that hard with the FABM in the vid. I had to up the ante with the FBMLE because Norcalblacktail just smoked through the 2X4 in 6 secs flat! Competition cutter material he is!

Next time around I am going to give it all I can muster. I am still holding back some for the fear of losing control of the blade.

This is a pretty good indicator of how big it is. I'm pretty large so it's hard to just size with me, but Solstice is about 120lbs lighter than me. It did fine chopping, but it's not a slicer. It did break the table after all....OK, maybe I chop a little to forcefully.

I noticed in the videos you shot after I left that you were using the new store bought wood. With the aged stuff it took more like 20 chops.

That makes me feel better about the slow chopping I did earlier.

You're still faster than me but at least you're not three times faster.

No buddy! Don't give yourself too much credit.:p You were a slacker because you left early and did not get enough practice. Towards the evening, Norcal, Tiny, and Myself were pretty warmed up. Check out how Tiny blazed through that old 2X4 in the vid compared to how he did towards the beginning of the chopping. I didn't think the 2X4s made much difference. The most impressive chops were done on the older stuff ie. AK47 8 chops and Norcalblacktails 6sec Blazing Glory.
