Just received my PM2 today...It's not sharp....at all.

Yes, yours are and no, mine aren't.

This will have to fall under the category of you do not believe what everyone is telling you, you are right and everyone else is wrong.

Seen it before.

Enjoy!

Your analogies are way off, as none of them are easily corrected examples of as-delivered "problems".

Allow me to explain.

If you bought a pair of shoes and there was a knot in the laces, that would be similar as you could easily correct the "problem".

If you bought a work truck and it had bird droppings on the roof, you could easily correct it by washing to correct the "problem".

If you bought pants that had a smudge of dirt on them, you could easily launder them to correct the "problem".

If you bought a knife that did not meet your expectations of edge sharpness, you could easily sharpen the knife to your liking to correct the "problem".

Or you could come here and complain that the knife was not sharp enough.

Your choice was made and you received answers. I am sure we are all sorry your knife was not sharp enough to please you.

best

Yeah, I think I'm looking at this thread pretty objectively and the examples that mqqn put forth are much more analogous to a knife with a dull blade than yours op. Having said that, I still respect your right to complain about any of those "examples". I would probably roll my eyes while you were complaining, ;-) because they aren't things that would bother me, but everyone is different.

Now in defense of the OP...I think a lot of people see this like me, and told the op honestly (but politely) how we would handle the situation. And even though our suggestions weren't in line with his way of seeing things, I did not see the op lashing out against any of that advice. He didnt FOLLOW it, he just politely declined it. Fair enough. A couple of folks were significantly less polite and he reacted...maybe overreacted. Meh. Whatever. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on here. And thankfully we are all entitled to disagree. We can even say "I think you are wrong"! And we can do all of these things while still being polite. It doesn't really take any more effort than being a d@u(he. :-).

Op, glad you got your knife sent out and that Sal is fixing you up. I think you are nuts for sending your brand new knife back for a sharpening...hehehe...but Godspeed! The good thing is I'll bet you that things gonna come back STUPID SHARP! careful! :-)

I am right. As many have already stated. I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong. It happens all the time. It's pretty funny how you act like this entire thread is full of people saying the same thing you are. There are about 3 of you. Nice try though.

I work in product development so I'm pretty anal and particular. I wouldn't let something slide if it had a noticeable flaw. If it did, I would hope someone would point it out and/or return it so it can be corrected in the future.

I've shown nothing but respect to the majority of people who have commented. I believe there were 3 people who were snobby, self-righteous aholes. There's a reason I don't go to bars anymore. I don't deal well with people like that.

If I had a sharpener right now I would have just sharpened it myself. I don't, and won't for another week or so. Could be longer. Everyone telling me to sharpen it is right. I should sharpen it. I don't have one though. I also shipped the knife out first thing in the morning so the suggestions that came later today I couldn't try because of that.

I got a PM2 when all others are sold out for $104.99 from a great dealer. I don't think I could be any happier.

Yeah that's a great price, that's what I'd pay I know where. It's also good to see that everything worked out for you. Now with the SM, not sharp will never be a problem.

No it will not. I have plenty of kitchen knives to screw around with too. Not sharp, whether new or old will no longer be an issue in time.

Wow, this thread is a train wreck. What's with jumping all over someone new for asking a simple question and then reading all sorts of ridiculous motives into his post and constructing even more ridiculous analogies?! Seriously, the folks getting this worked up over a simple question should maybe step away from the keyboard for a bit. The staff at Spyderco are all adults and can respond themselves, which Sal did quite respectfully. Props to Sal for the personal interest; it's that type of service that is fantastic to see and reinforces that Spyderco may have the odd one-off issue (like every company does) but still runs circles around most companies for service and quality. Good stuff!

For the original poster, you haven't done anything wrong by asking a simple question. You bought a new product and expected it to be optimal and there is NOTHING wrong with that. Hell, if I spend my hard-earned money on something it had better be tip-top out of the box. After all, that's what is being paid for, not a fix-it-yourself product (since those usually come heavily discounted). If it isn't right out of the box then its natural to wonder if it came that way out of the factory and want some feedback from folks who may know. So, in short, don't worry about it; all of us aren't that uptight and the owner himself is taking care of you. You'll love the Endura 4 you mentioned picking up soon as well; I carried a Wave version as my EDC for years and its back in rotation again and still performing perfectly. Enjoy your PM2 when it gets back, it's a phenomenal knife.

That lot was a mouthful.

I personally have purchased a couple of my first spydies all came very sharp. And if they were not sharp they would go back simple. I have no clue how to sharpen a knife properly and i have no need to learn. If you buy a new knife you expect it to be able to live up too tasks it was built for straight out of the box.

Good luck OP hope it gets sorted for you :)

So dramatic. You're wrong when you say I don't want to learn. You're wrong when you say you can help me get along with others. There was one person I didn't get along with in this thread filled with people. Apparently, to you, that means I don't get along with people here. When someone accuses me of bad mouthing someone or something when it's not even remotely true, there's a problem.

Oh and I didn't complain. It's actually frightening how sensitive some of you are. I received a knife and simply stated what I received. Apparently, that makes me a horrible person who complains, doesn't want to learn or get along with people. Just remember, I never argued with anyone who said something true. I only argued with, again, ONE person who said something which was false. I've talked to plenty of people on this forum already. I think I'll do just fine without your help and big mike's help.

Have you figured out yet you aren't doing just fine? :)

Truth can be found even in words that piss you off. Truth is truth even when you are angry and don't like it. Is it better that the people here tell you what you want to hear, or tell you what you need to hear?

Oh, and yes you did complain. Your thread in effect is exactly that. That isn't an issue though. We like trying to help people solve problems and learn stuff. That's how we learn things ourselves in threads which is why most of us are here. I'm here to learn anyways, can't speak for everybody. Yes, your attitude is what brought your problems in this thread on. Not Rabid fans, or fanboys, or whatever you choose to label them.

Seems like you have the knife situation under control so now you can just put this thread behind you and move on to the next thread. Hopefully accept some of the blame to yourself ( not suggesting anything else) and learn from it then pretend it never happened. Being really thin skinned AND mouthy isn't a great thing on the internet even in well moderated forums like BF.

It's ironic that you're telling me I'm thin skinned, mouthy, and not doing fine.

Sorry, but most of the analogies in this thread suck. If I purchase a knife for >$100, and it costs >$50 to buy a sharp maker I don't have to repair the edge that the blade did not come with, I would not consider it an "easy fix."

Yes, most knife aficionado's on these forums, including myself, want to do our own sharpening and went out and bought a set of knife sharpening tools, but it shouldn't be required since we have Spyderco's complimentary Blade Sharpening service.

Obviously the knife should have came sharp because Spyderco has a reputation to keep of shipping out sharp things. Fortunately, when they make a mistake, they are very responsive and want to get it fixed.

Thanks. I had no clue this thread would turn out the way it did.

That's exactly the reason why I try not to post threads unless I absolutely have to.
The easiest thing to do is say "I'm wrong, you're right". Otherwise, you just post back and forth with the keyboard warrior that took your well-intended post to heart.

Hey minimalist, I know it's nice hearing people agree with you, but take everything with a grain of salt. (Especially anything I say!!) It is indeed "required" to have a way of sharpening if you want to use your knife and keep it sharp. If you are actually going to use the thing, you can't just mail it off everytime it gets dull.

I know you are well aware of that, as I read your thread on the maintenance forum. Im just curious, did you order the sharpmaker? I was just wondering because I saw you were leaning in different directions. I was looking at the same decision a couple of months ago and chose to go with diamond stones..specifically the dmt diafolds. I got the coarse/fine and the ef/eef and have been extremely pleased. Im kind of amazed at the results im getting and the learning curve isn't that steep. You are obviously interested and willing to teach yourself, so I just thought I'd recommend them. Even if you already have the sharpmaker coming, a diafold would make a good tool to start free handing with IMHO. It's kind of an enjoyable process. Give it a shot, you'll see. If I was only buying one for maintaining an edge I would get the fine/extra fine.

Just some good advice I got from others here and I thought I'd pass it along.

It's ironic that you're telling me I'm thin skinned, mouthy, and not doing fine.

Is it really? Should I just tell you what you want to hear instead?

Do you think everybody goes through this when they have a problem with a knife? You do seem to be the type to refuse to see any actions you have taken could have affected peoples reaction to you. You seem to see it as everybody else who was wrong. They only reacted to your posts because there was something wrong with them maybe? So it seems anyhow. Only you truly know what you think.

Anyhow, I'm glad Sal personally is looking into the situation for you. You will get taken care of. That I'm sure of. If it turns out they are sending out knives too dull he's the guy who can straighten it out. If in fact you were sent a used knife that will be taken care of as well. He always follows up on what he says. He travels a lot so some people think he has forgotten if they don't hear back immediately. He never forgets though.

IMO, whatever system you chose to sharpen diamond stones are a good investment. The modern super steels laugh at the old Arkansas stones I had 45 years ago when I first began learning to sharpen. I use DMT's, but the Spyderco system with the diamond sleeve may be just what you need. You will regret not having something like that when you have more than just touch ups to do. Reprofiling can take what seems like forever without them when using modern high wear steels.

Once again, good luck

Joe

It can happen, I've had a few knives come dull from factory. My Southard came rather dull, as did my ZT 0561. It's easy enough just to touch them up yourself though.
