K20 | Picture Gallery

I've had my head down for a few weeks trying to get some work done, I should be posting everything to my web store later in the week.

The work is all done, just drying and/or being assembled. Shiv sacks are done too.

Here's a sneak peek of a few of the leather sheaths and Shiv Sacks... I'll post some more later along with a Pirate Steampunk option that will be available ;)

Beautiful Arizona Desert Ironwood!! It is protected and getting harder to get. It is illegal to take a piece from the desert, dead or alive. You're not allowed to even take seeds off of a Arizona Desert Ironwood tree in it's natural habitat. It grows for over 2000 years, and the only tree that grows longer in North America is the redwood.
If you find gold, you can keep it, but if you find Arizona desert Ironwood, you have to leave it, that is how rare and protected it is. 😍

Doing some more research on saya construction and apparently you have to be careful on what glue is used to prevent rusting on the blade. Seems like Titebond I is good, but not II or III.

Even then, it sounds like it may not be great for long term storage.

Very true, adhesives can have acids in them, especially the higher tech ones that “stick to anything”. The acid etches the surface to increase adhesion.

I’ve never experienced it but Nathan has reported seeing blue painters tape causing corrosion on blades.

As far as long term storage, ANY sheath can have issues for long term storage, even knife pouches for that matter. The problem isn’t with the sheath, it’s with temperature changes and humidity. If you have fluctuations in either condensation develops and gets trapped longer than it would in open air, potentially causing corrosion.

If you add a caustic chemical to the mix whether it be glue, salt or inappropriate leather (chrome tanned, Latigo etc) it just compounds matters.

Blue painters tape will absolutely discolor your metal if you leave it on there too long. The same is true for sharpie marker.

Speaking of big weeners, when I was like 10 a buddy of mine's grandpa had a walking stick made from a stretched and dried bull c**k, forever to be known as the "Bull C**k Walking Stick", went down in childhood lore. I have always wanted one. Now tomorrow I have to make Eggplant Parm.

Sorry for the delay on getting the scabbards and Shiv Sacks loaded on my web store. During final assembly I had to make an adjustment to the carry system and needed to order some more parts. They are completed now and will be posted to my store Monday or Tuesday. I will email the people signed up for notifications first.

Here are some pictures on what will be available..

Steampunk Pirate Scabbards

This one will need a little background, I know it's not for everyone. I have wanted to make a wood leather hybrid for a long time, it is inspired by a Japanese company (Kanetsune) who makes traditional forged sporting knives and uses a similar design for the sheaths.

In practice, mine ended up more Steampunk Pirate! I started with 1/4" Poplar that was then lined with veg tanned leather and an English Bridle welt. The fasteners are the same solid brass knife handle rivets that have been in use for over 100 years. Where screws were needed I used Threaded aluminum barrels and solid brass screws. These things are damn near bullet proof and at no point does anything other than leather touch your blade.

The wood was stained honey brown with multiple coats of hand rubbed poly on the flats. Then the whole scabbard hand multiple hand rubbed coats of butchers block sealing was applied and hand buffed. The edges were burnished through to give it a warm aged look. These have a wonderful soft waxy feel, like grandma's old furniture.

All of the leather fittings are 6 ounce English Bridle most of which are laminated to football leather that is extremely strong and thin. These were all edge dyed and polished then soaked in my normal final finish, but also hand rubbed with the same wax as the wood to add a little antiqued warmth and softness.

The integrated brass carry hooks can be put on a belt or shoulder strap quickly and removed just as fast. The scabbard itself was built with a generous fit and the heavy bridle strap has double snaps for great security and to keep the sword from moving around.

All visible fasteners are solid brass, no plating.

Please note, these will not fit the Shiv Sacks below. I did not have time to make wider ones, but will offer to make one at a later date for anyone who wants one and ship it for free.

Classic English Bridle Scabbard

These are my classic style sheaths in scabbard form, finished to the same standards as all of my work. The leather used ranges in thickness from about 9 - 11 ounces. I will have black, brown, oxblood, camouflage overlay and antiqued olive available.

All of these scabbards have an integrated carry hook that has three positions to adjust the cant to your liking. On the center post they will all dangle at about 30-40 degrees. The brown bodied scabbards have solid brass hooks and rings where the black bodied ones have titanium hardware.

Shiv Sacks

As promised earlier, I am adding a line of soft storage bags to my product line and these are the first to be made. Keep an eye on my store for sizes to fit all popular lengths of fixed blades in their sheaths.

These bags are hand made by me from high quality heavy weight breathable fabrics. They are full lined with a draw string around the grip area for secure fastening. The mouth of the bags are reinforced internally with 1" cotton webbing for strength and to keep them from puckering when the string is drawn. They are extra long to ensure your precious does not poke out.

Edit: I doubt I will ever do Asian themed fabric again, and it will be a full print in the future. For this run I was not able to purchase large enough pieces of fabric to make them the full size.
