Ken Erickson Knives: A Retrospective

I love that electricians knife!!! taking a work horse and making a work of art...great job Ken!!!

Thanks for the kind comments on the electricians knife guys! This one really kicked my butt:eek: I finished it up and overall pretty happy with the results. There are a few things that I would do a bit different in and when another one gets made. I have a new found respect for this knife, just how hard it was to get all elements working right.

Thanks guys!
I am having a bad photo day, had a hard time getting decent photos especially of the grinds on the screwdriver blade.

Wow Ken, just wow!

If that was hard for you then I won't even bother trying it. I do have a question for you though because I can't quite tell in the pics. Did you mill relieve the liner nearly the full length of the screw driver?

Way to go!!!

Jared,

I hope my trials and tribulations with this knife do not keep you from trying one yourself. I learned a bunch from taking on this project. I know you and I have talked about it before via the phone, but I am convinced that pushing yourself with these hard to build patterns will only make you better and in a shorter time span.

Good eye on the liner. I mill relieved the liners as normal but then tapered the top 1/3 or so to give some clearance for the screwdriver blade. That is one of the tough aspects of this knife. The screwdriver blade does not taper thinner out from the tang as most blades do. That and the fact that it is basically a saber grind does not leave any room for blade rubs. Of course in the production model, this was not a concern.

I was being a little facetious in saying I would never try it. I'm sure I'll do one, just maybe not that version. A liner lock version would push me plenty at this point in my knifemaking.

I wondered how you were pulling it off. Tapering the screw driver definitely makes more sense visually but can definitely be more difficult to grind.

Thanks for the info!
