Ken Onion joined forces with CRKT

Umm.... I said FOR NOW

You are missing the point. How do you know they aren't working on a knife together, or don't have another Ken design in reserve for the future?

You are taking conjecture and comprising facts.

None of us know, for certain, what Kershaw or Ken Onion are, or are not, currently working on behind the scenes, nor what may already be an option that they haven't produced.

I would speculate that Kershaw has dozens, maybe hundreds, of various prototypes that are production options for the future.

First of all let me say, Thanks Ken for all of your designs that I have enjoyed for the last twelve years and for upcoming designs that you will do. I wish you well in all your endeavors.
I sit and I read threads a lot more than I actually post. Sometimes I sit and bite my tongue, sit on my hands, turn off the computer, or anything else I can do not to chime in and go crazy. It is really hard to stay quiet when people you care about and respect are being attacked. Sometimes the attackers don't even realize that they are offending people, sometimes they do and just don't care. I am not sure that some people really understand what is happening when all goes south. I would like to explain to you how I feel , then maybe you will have a different , or at least another perspective.
I have been collecting Kershaw knives for over a quarter of a century, ( yes I am old) I have met Pete Kershaw and I know of his designs when he worked for Gerber in the early seventies, and I know of his business motto that he started The Kershaw company with. I have talked with people like Walter Alexander, Erhard Gross, Ken Onion and several others that have done work for Kershaw over the years, and they are all stand up people. Kershaw has always employed and contracted the nicest people you would ever want to meet. Many of them I count as friends, and all I have liked. They take good care of their employees as well as their customers. Some of the people I know at Kershaw have been there for over twenty five years. The point I am trying to make is this when you say things about a company or someone in a company and you think it is not personal to someone, you are wrong. A company is people, and Kershaw is my family and they are family to many others. They work very hard to produce a fine product for us , and they back it up with unparalleled customer service. So when you say things, feelings get hurt and people get defensive, rightly so.
So , please the next time you want to say something about any company, please remember that there are hard working , nice people there, that are always someones family.
Stop and think before you post, do I know the facts, is this going to hurt someone, do I really want to cause harm ? If the answer is no, good for you, you care. If the answer is yes , then the mods need to do some weeding. We all could stand to do some weeding in our lives, we are all in this together you know.

I am done now, I do hope that you all have a wonderful day.

Sincerely
Dave Anderson

I suppose that only time will tell. I stand by my prediction and will gladly eat my words should I prove to be wrong. It may be conjecture, but it is informed conjecture at least--not blind as was implied. Should any Onion designs come out this year under the Kershaw name I'll not be shocked, merely wrong. :)

I'm not very pleased by the...tension in this thread. When tempers rise conversation is lost. Consider this my bowing out, though I'll be watching with interest.

very good observation dave, you are so very correct, people should think and sometimes what a while before speaking and they will have a different if not more accurate view of the situation that they are writing about.

i have always said that they are two things that you cannot recall and that is a bullet and a word, sometimes they are equally deadly.

thanks for your observation and i have always said kershaw and spyderco in the same breath for a while now and i have been collecting both for about 25 years now myself.

crkt is also a good quality brand as well.

ken onion will do well anywhere he goes!

yes, the quailty has much improved! the last 2 years, they have really stepped it up! Paul

Is anyone else seeing a pattern with CRKT with Gerry McGinnis, Jon and Josh Graham and now Ken Onion...

And with Meyerco with Randall King, Greg Lightfoot, Kirby Lambert and Darrel Ralph.

Things are heading in a direction that makes my custom collection sad, but my wallet very very happy.

As long as the knife is nice and sharp, it doesn't have to be hacked through the steak, just sliced carefully, perhaps brushing the plate. :)

If you never do anything to dull your knife, you never get a chance to practice sharpening, eh Phil?

I suppose you guys have some points, but the idea is like scratching nails on a chalkboard to me. The sharpening part is always fun though:thumbup:. I always feel weird when all my blades are sharp. Mostly because I won't let that stop me from sharpening them some more.

Thank you sir for your sensitive thoughtful comments . I for one feel that these conversations for the most part are a great thing . I feel everyone has a voice here and there opinions are welcome just so long as it doesn't get personal. Sure I miss the Kershaw crew , There are a lot of wonderful folks over there.
Change is sometimes hard and I look at this thread as a chance for everyone to get things off of there chests, let there thoughts be known and maybe vent a little. I appreciate passionate people speaking passionately about things they care about. I want to hear your thoughts and concerns .
As I read this thread over again I realize that alot of you guys really care about my leaving Kershaw . It is good to know you all cared that much and are passionate enough about it to put it out there, even if you are one of the ones that are glad to see me go.
This industry, you guys and Kershaw has been very good to me over the years and I sincerely appreciate that. I'm not going anywhere and will continue to sing my song and dance my dance . Those of you that don't like my stuff ,well ... I'm sure there are many other very talented makers out there who will make that knife that is just right for you and companies ready to make a version that is affordable. For those of you that like my stuff , well . I plan on doing this for many years to come . Kershaw and I had a great run and I am grateful for all the opportunities they allowed me. I look back fondly at the time I spent there and the friendships I made that I will hold for life. But like all things we came to a fork in the road and neither one of us would budge . They chose there path and I chose mine.I respect that and have no regrets.
As much as this is a sensitive subject I feel you deserved a little explanation and welcome Kershaw to give any feedback they deem necessary.
I wish Kershaw nothing but the best in the future.

Sorry to be repetitious, but very well said, Dave. Thank you for your very thoughtful insights.

This lack of tolerance is what I observe more and more in Kershaw and while I only welcome Zero Tolerance model line, in other area it does not looks good.

Hahah. Nice play on words. You like Zero Tolerance but don't like their zero tolerance. I get it. Classic.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing because I don't know anything about the subject I just thought it was funny how he said it.

+1, very well said Dave. Sometimes it takes the words of one of our "senior" members;) to really drive a point home.

Dave, your post and Ken's response are making me feel all mushy:o

You didnt kill it Ken :D , this thread was slightly wounded by a few folks whose opine would have been better left untyped.

I for one, hope the best for all parties involved.

Tostig

Gosh guys , I didn't mean to kill this thread...

I don't think you killed it so much as you took the wind out of some posters sails. Hard to argue and speculate when you're presented with facts. The Blur and Random Task helped reawaken my interest in pocket knives. Thanks.:D Speaking for my self, I hope that this collaboration opens a new chapter in your successful career.

I hated to see you leave Kershaw. They are one company that could do your work justice and deliver it at a reasonable price. Most of my Kershaw collection is consist of your designs. (Shoot, I have a Shallot in my pocket as I type) On the other hand I am glad to see some of you work show up at CRKT. I stopped buying from them a while back just because it of quality, or lack there of. They used to produce some nice stuff (Apache model was nice) and I hope your presence there will make them put a little more consideration in the quality of their product and not just something that looks neat but doesn't deliver in performance. I'll be keeping an eye one how well the Ripple is received.

So how do people like the ikbs system? I've always wanted to try one.

I have the Pro Series Junkyard Dog from Tim Galyean, and I really like the IKBS:thumbup: Extremely smooth operation, the blade feels like it glides right out of the handle. If the Ripple's action is anything like it, you will be very pleased!

i've always thought CRKT can make good stuff, with good F&F and good materials, IF they want to, one con of the better CRKT's so far is they start approaching BM & spydie in price (ie the CF and ti M16's were pretty expensive for a CRKT MSRP on both were getting up around $150 or so) and they are gonna have to offer something really special to compete with those guys, perhaps they plan on doing that with kens help?

we'll see..........
