I'm in, please. This GAW fills me with nostalgia, since I attended the Derby each first Saturday of May from 1972 through 1984 (except 1974)!:thumbsup::cool:

My picks for this post:
Messier (ridden by John Velazquez) to Win
Taiba (Mike Smith up) to Place
Epicenter (Joel Rosaria, jockey) to Show

Primble instructed us to try to WOW everyone with our group photos of knives. I'm afraid neither my knives nor my photos are likely to wow most of the crowd at BF, but maybe someone will say, "That's semi-cool" upon seeing my souvenir Derby glasses.
derby.4cases.jpg
I didn't get a glass every year; the ones shown are 1972, 1977, 1979, and 1984 (l to r), so I do have one for my first and last years. You can obtain these glasses with or without a mint julep inside. I only got the mint julep the first time, and that was enough for me to decide that I'm not a mint julep kind of guy.

Here's a close-up of the backs of a couple of the glasses to show (not as clearly as I hoped) the list of Derby winners that appears on each glass:
derby.winnerlist.jpg

Although it's not required for the GAW, I thought I'd describe how I made my picks. In a previous post, Primble mentioned that looking at jockeys is sometimes helpful in picking horses, and I agree. That's what I tried to do here.

Velazquez has ridden in the Derby 23 times previously, I think. He's also 50 years old. When I walk around town and pass "slowpokes" on the sidewalk, I often say, "Excuse me folks - galloping geezer coming through." So I'm obligated to support the efforts of a galloping geezer of a jockey like Velazquez. He has won the Derby 3 times already, 4 if you count last year when his horse finished first but was later disqualified for using PEDs. A messy situation, but it gets even messier, since Messier is the name of his ride this year, and Messier was trained until recently by the trainer who is currently suspended because of the drug violations last year.

Taiba is another horse trained, until recently, by the very successful but currently-suspended trainer in question. Mike Smith (do you think that's his REAL name??) is a Hall of Fame jockey with 2 previous Derby wins, and I'm counting on his experience to be a difference maker.

Joel Rosaria, Epicenter's jockey, was a very "hot jockey" last year, winning the Eclipse Award as Outstanding Jockey. I'm hoping his recent success will help him to keep Epicenter in the running, despite his less-than-ideal post position #3.

Thanks for the Derby-related fun, Primble! πŸ€“:cool:

Rules update:

All entries must be in by 6:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Race time is currently set at 6:57 p.m., E.S.T.

You can better your chances if you follow the guidelines on page 1 and then even more chances if you follow the road to success, all marked with emojis by the Derby Leprechaun. ;) ☺️

Good luck and follow the advice above if you are in it to win it ! 😊

Great post, Gary. Sorry you don't like mint juleps. It's vying with a dry martini (olive, no twist) for my favourite cocktail!

Very cool thread, Primble. This does not follow the rules - not an entry, I haven’t posted much lately, but I’m around, just very busy. May go to Blade Show in ATL next month.

I bet real cash money on Smile Happy, so if that goes well, I could possibly afford a GEC 77. Here are some recycled pics from the pile thread, which I enjoy, and encourage others to pile on:

I'll post another entry; sometimes in my old Derby-attending days, I'd occasionally make more than one bet on a race. πŸ€“

This time I'll pick horses with names that remind me of some of my favorite knives.
1. Crown Pride to Win
2. Pioneer of Medina to Place
3. Classic Causeway to Show

Why Crown Pride? I'm proud of the few old Imperial knives I have, and at least one of them has the "crown shield" often seen on Imperial knives back in the day. (I also have more Rough Riders than any other knife brand, I think, so I have no qualms about "offshore products", including a horse from Japan.)

I chose the other two horse because their names remind me of Victorinox models (Pioneer and Classic SD), and the consistent quality of SAKs impresses me.

Here's a couple of photos of a group of lambsfoot knives:

Here are a couple of groups of canoes:

Nice assortment of traditional knives ! I like the wheel barrel approach ! 🀣
I counted your posts in this forum and it appears you have enough postings.
If you care to pick another 2 horses before 6:00 p.m. and change your mind about being an entry, it will be allowed. ☺️ πŸ€

Final Rules for winning:

1. All draws from the horses bucket will follow the actual Derby. I need time to be sure I have it all right and give each one of you the draws you earned. The actual draw will likely be tomorrow and will be posted here.

2. You can earn as many as five chances or draws, but, no more than five draws. There are scenarios where some could earn more than five, but, five is the limit.

3. If any or your horse picks are in the top three finishers today, it only earns you chances or draws, not a knife. The correct order of finish does not matter, except if we have a Trifecta winner.

4. There is one exception to rule 3. and that is, assuming you are in complete compliance with the rules thus far and stated from page 1, have posted at least one group photo of your knives, and you win the Trifecta with your horse pics, you will be awarded the knife of your choice. No drawing necessary for this scenario. To win the Trifecta, the three horses you picked have to place in the top three and in the correct order.

5. If you win the Trifecta and did not post a group photo, you will be given two draws from the horse bucket. Three minus one penalty, if you will.

6. If you called the winner correctly, you will earn two chances in the bucket.

7. If any of your horses finish in the top three, in any order, you will earn an additional chance in the bucket.

8. You must have the fifty posts in the Traditionals forum, as previously requested on page one. I will only check that after the draws have been made.

9. You can only win one knife from this GAW. If you win one, you are eliminated from the other two draws.

Mystery Bonus Chances: πŸ€πŸ€

If you posted at least one group photo of you knives with your entry, you earned one chance in the bucket. πŸ€

If you posted more than one group photo of your knives, you earned another chance. πŸ€

If you posted five or more group photos in this thread and before this posting, you earned another chance. πŸ€

If you have posted in the What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today? thread in the past three days, you earned another chance in the bucket. πŸ€

If you posted in the Stag Saturday - Let's See Some Traditional Stag! thread in the past three weeks, you earned another chance in the bucket. πŸ€

You have until 6:00 p.m. E.S.T. to make adjustments.

Good luck to all who entered !!! ☺️

** All race winners are subject to official Derby results, beyond my control.

This post is too late to be anything but "just for fun", but if I had found descriptions of the horses in the Derby today, I probably would have made one more "bet" on a trio of chestnut horses, since I'm awfully fond of the chestnut jigged bone CV knives from Case (and would love to some day acquire a canoe that fits that description πŸ€“ ).

Time is up for any new entrants. Thread will close temporarily for an hour or so following the race and then re-open.

Good luck to all who entered ! πŸ€ πŸ€ πŸ€ πŸ€ πŸ€ πŸ€ πŸ€ πŸ€ 😊😊
