Kershaw Knives News Thread

One more question.

When did the Leek's change to Sandvik? I have a replaced Leek that is a Feb 2007, so I'm just wondering...

Max, let's see, it's late, but from what I can recall right now, the 440A models that will be changed to 13C26;
Blackout's, Whirlwind's, Leek's, Baby Boa, Centofonte/Onion's, Blur's.

habit, the Leek's haven't been changed over yet, still a month or so away.

When did the Cyclones (My Dad's is Sep 06) switch to the harder heat treated 13C26?

BlackOpsSec, welcome to the forums, to answer your question, the only difference between the two knives would be the finish. The CGTST would have a satin finish, the G10ST a stonewash. As far as the qty produced, both were short runs. There were 128 pieces of the CGTST produced, and 259 pieces of the G10ST.

Hey Thomas,

thank you very much for the informative and prompt reply. since i have a G10 already, i guess i'll get the CGTST so i'll have a couple of different Leek G10 finishes.

btw, i've just recently gotten into knife collecting, and wound up getting hooked in part due to your posts here. to date, my favorite brand - BY FAR - is Kershaw. I like the Leek design most, and carry a Leek G10 daily. in the past couple months, i've also picked up a rainbow ET, 1660ST, Blur G10, Groove. next up are the Trooper and Random Leek. maybe even a JYD. i need to add an automatic to my collection too though, so i'll be forced to buy a Benchmade Infidel unless you guys start making some autos (hint hint, and it'd be neat if the first one was an OTF).

overall, after all of the time i've spent checking out blades and visiting knife shops and gun shows, i'm convinced that the single greatest invention in knives in the past 100 yrs is the Kershaw SpeedSafe functionality.

please keep us updated with as much Kershaw info as you can share, and thanks for your efforts on the forums to date! :)

Mike, well it's a little cloudy of when all the HT changes happened, so I couldn't say for certain. If you feel the HT is off on your dad's Cyclone, send it on back and I'll take care of it.

BlackOps, very cool post, appreciate the support for sure.

Auto's.....hmmmm.......bali-songs.......hmmmmm

Balisongs. Now that's what we need to see from you guys. I just sent a suggestion in via the company website about that not two days ago. I think it was sent in on Tuesday afternoon actually.

Hey Thomas, two more questions if you don't mind. Will the change in steel from 440A to the Sandvik raise the prices of those models at all? And any plans to upgrade the steel on the 420HC Scallions and Chives to Sandvik.

My current Kershaws. I have a micarta handled, partial serrated Ricochet on the way. Waiting for the Lahar to become available as well.

Max, there will not be a price increase on any of the 13C26 converted models.

At this time, we are continuing to use 420HC on Chives and Scallions.

pkd, that Ricochet of yours is polished G-10.;) The Lahar is only a week or two away.

Thanks, Thomas, I will send it in to you. Should I send it in attention you or e-mail you at all? It has some pretty bad burring issues that won't seem to sharpen out, which is not the norm from all of the reports I've heard from STR, Thom Brogan, and others (in fact, from what I've heard the burring is usually VERY minimal, which is one of the reasons I am drawn to this steel and recommended it to my Dad). I tried sharpening it to 18 degrees to get to good steel in case it was overheated on the factory sharpening and it still burrs with a 22 degree microbevel. I appreciate your help on this and will send it off ASAP, and look forward to trying some of the good, crisp 13C26 that I've been hearing people rave about. Thanks again for the help.

Thanks Thomas for that bit of info. The seller indicated micarta. That's ok, I still want it.

Mike, mine (mini) is dated jun 06 and seems to sharpen up just fine. The burr is very minimal and this thing gets sharp! I am loving this steel! This is a sweet knife Thomas and I'm really enjoying it!

I don't doubt at all that the steel works very well (especially after hearing great reports from people like Thom Brogan, STR, Dog of War, and more, on the sharpness, edge retention, and lack of burring in sharpening), but in the production knife world sometimes a knife with a bad heat treat (or any other number of factors) will slip out. It's just a fact of life, mass production and batch heat treating can leave some blades with a suboptimal heat treat (see reports of S30V that was supposed to be 59-60 RC being measured at 55 RC), and as long as the customer service department of the company you bought the knife from is willing to back it up it is hard to complain when you look at the great cost of the Cyclone relative to the materials and the fact it is made in the USA. I have read plenty of complaints about knives like the very expensive (to me at least) Sebenza and many other knives having poor or inconsistent heat treatments (especially S30V), and having edges that just crumble under sharpening or burr excessively, so I will definately reserve my judgement on this steel and knife until I try another one (or more). I am confident the replacement will work just fine, and look forward to trying it.

bali-songs.......hmmmmm

That's the spirit! Maybe a collaboration bringing together Tim Galyean, that Onion guy, and the people of Ikoma and Korth?

A balisong based on the JYD II (including that 13C26) would be incredible. One featuring the Ikoma Korth Bearing System would be sublime.

As I do believe a dud will get out now and then, lets not misjudge and blame batch heat treatment. With the high tech ovens and low tolerances, and control of heat treatment in factories I think the dud ratio is low, and probably the best heat treatment available any where.
Back on topic another vote for a 3 inch Baly.

4 inch market would be better.

People just starting out want quality balisongs to learn on, not CCC's, and they want them regular size. Benchmade is the only company they would have to compete against, as Spyderco will probably be stuck with manufacturing problems for awhile. Apparently the Smallfly wont be effected though, so a 3 inch from Kershaw would have to go against the Smallfly and the Morpho, so full-size is the way to go.

Any size bali for me so long as it has the JYD/JYD II blade shape, 13C26 steel, and a reversible wire pocketclip.

Hi denny, welcome to the forums.
Sorry to hear your Groove got to you with some corrosion on the blade. Certainly you can send it back for warranty if needed. There are some various metal cleaners that should clean it up quickly, but do whatever you are most comfortable with. We can turn a new Groove around quickly for you.

We have had some minor corrosion issues with 13C26, but most are very surface oriented, and can be taken care of no problem.
:) Thank you Thomas for the sound advice I just got an email from Dawn of the Warranty dept. they were quite nice and instructed me to send it in for evaluation! I have since packed it up for a replacement the specks are small but visible to the naked eye, I feel it shouldn't be there as I take great care in my blades always coating them with Miltech-1 so a New knife with corrosion issues is a definite problem with me! But I appreciate the GREAT customer service you guys have I can't wait for my New one to arrive!:p :p

How about both? I mean, I love a 4 inch for flipping at home and a 3 inch for carrying for utility. I can EDC a bali where I live. Plus, from what I heard, Spyderco is dealing with a legality issue and not a manufacturing issue. Plus, I think Kershaw could bring out a great design that comes in at a better price than the Smallfly or Morpho for that price range.
