Kershaw Knives News Thread

I love this thread,
I know that it is supposed to be about Kershaw news, but it is more like a Kershaw-Family newsletter. It is like a magazine about Kershaw products, the people that make them, and the people that use them. I love Kershaw Knives. One of my favorite things to think about is which one I am going to buy next.
I know that there are no plans to further the Bump line of knives, but I own two of each.( If I like a knife I always buy two, just in case.) I don't like the scales on the Speed Bump. Let's just say that I would prefer something else, aluminium perhaps? I have tried to make new scales for it on my own and have aquired a new respect for the quality of manufacturing that I can buy from Kershaw at a very reasonable price.
To recap: I really love the Bumps and the Offsets, and I will buy two or more of any variation that is made available.

PS It seemed a little cruel for Thomas to show us his OD G-10 Spec-Bump proto type with the Strider striping

where did Thomas show this knife? i wanna see pic

i guess its my turn to find out about kershaw service-
my new zdp mini cyclone had a bad lockbar when i recieved it-it stinks sending a brand new piece in for repair ,but i understand snit happens-

I almost hate to ask again, but the wait is probably harder than for my original Offset (six months, btw) now that I know how amazing the knife really is.

Will the G-10 Offsets be numbered? I had been planning to EDC the G10 Offset, but might have to order another one just to put away.
Were the 1597GRYs numbered?

While I've been waiting on the Offset I've been forced to buy a couple more Bump variations, one of the S30V Leeks, and a couple of other Kershaws to prevent withdrawal. Hey, wait a minute, was this Kershaw's plan all along? ;)

I have to say that I'm glad I found BladeForums and especially this thread. Now I understand how Craig G. at Kershaw (thanks again!) could be so patient and helpful with me last year when I was being so fanatically critical and picky. Apparently I'm normal...or at least not the only one with this wonderful affliction :D

I'm pretty sure that these are some of Thomas' EDCs
Thomas said:
the 2 all black Spec Bumps are the first (now discontinued) and second generation versions that were/are regular production. The other 4 are proto's that were made. That clad ZDP/Micarta (the uncoated one) version is a knife I carried for 8 months or so, sweet piece. At this point I don't see another SB variation, at least in the near future.

This probably isn't the place to ask, but how do I get a Kershaw catalog? I can't find anything on their site.

Thomas just wondering if you are going to be at the NRA show in St Louis becasue i remember seeing kershaw on the exhibit list

Kershaw Model #1525 25th Anniversary Knife. Anyone have any info on this knife? Found one online and looks kind of interesting but would like to know how many were actually made.

Thanks to Thomas for sending me back my Dad's Cyclone, which he rockwell tested and sharpened (it still has a little burr though), along with a new one. I had previously had trouble getting it to get sharp without burring and suspected it was a heat treat issue, but Thomas said it came out at 59.5 RC, well within spec. I really appreciate the quick turnaround and sending a new knife along with the old one, great customer service in my book.

Picked up the Kershaw Storm about 3 days ago and so far I'm loving it. I'm looking to buy another Kershaw soon and was looking into assisted ones, such as the speed bump. Anyone got any recommendations for a assisted Kershaw?

Storms specs:
Steel: Sandvik 13C26 stainless-steel
Handle: 410 stainless-steel with Trac-Tec inserts
Blade Length: 3 in. (7.5 cm)
Closed Length: 4 in. (10.3 cm)
Weight: 4.2 oz.

spikefood,

the speed bump is good. so is the spec bump, chive, leek, blur, boa, baby boa, and mini mojito (mojo). when i handle others (like the new g-10 offset) i'll let you know.

what size are you looking at?

the baby boa, mini mojito (mojo), chive, and leek are all on the smaller side.

the boa, blur and the bumps are all about the medium to semi-large side (the bumps are bigger and heftier than the storm)

the offset is a freaky looking thing and is definatly bigger than the bumps (just look at the pics you can find on this forum)

all of these are assisted

hope that helps

Thanks for the info. I was looking at the leek and the speed bump, they seemed to be pretty nice knives.

Also whats the difference between the spec bump and speed bump?

the diferences between the spec bump and the speed bump is that the speed bump has a brush type finish while the spec has the black tungsten dlc coating. the speed bump has a akulon handle with a santoprene overmold while the spec bump has a textured g-10 handle. both have great steels. sandvik 13c26 for the spped bump and s30v for the spec bump. and both have the stud lock. that thing is reliable, just takes some getting used to.

the leek is a great EDC size. u'll love both

Spikefood, the Spec/Speed 1596SVBL is a great version of the Bump pattern. I think I actually prefer the look of the pattern on its scales to the current Spec Bump. Definitely worth looking into if you can find one.

Thomas I understand that the blades on the 1596SVBL were mis-marked as S30V, but were the blades actually meant to have been S30V? The boxes are marked as Spec Bumps with the 1596 Model number instead of the 1595 from the Speeds.

Any word on the G-10 Offsets? I bought ANOTHER version of the G-10 leek in the mean time (I won't have anything left to buy the Offset with if they don't come soon).

Sorry for not attending to this thread over the last few weeks, my temper got the best of me. I'm back now.

My guess is he (Thomas) will go by "born on" dates. Maybe Kershaw will change their minds and mark the blades. It would be nice to pick up a knife and see 13C26 on the blade. That would remove all doubt.
We may have to make the blades when the steel change happens, I just hate having that billboard effect with all the engraving. Otherwise we will have to gauge it by the born on dates. Will keep you posted.

Will the G-10 Offsets be numbered? I had been planning to EDC the G10 Offset, but might have to order another one just to put away.
Were the 1597GRYs numbered?
The 1597GRY's were not numbered, and it looks like there will be about 400 of those produced.
The G-10 Offset will not be serialized, and it looks as if the first articles will be out by month's end.

kneedeep, guilty as charged.:D
