Kershaw Knives News Thread

Guys, is it just me or what...(thats not a question) Why isnt there a Kershaw Sub-Forum in the Manufactures Forums section? Maybe its there and I just can't find it, I dont know... But hell, they got a "Razors, Scissors, Trimmers & Personal Grooming" Sub-Forum that has all of 5 posts in it, why not a Kershaw? Do their knives suck or something? Just ask'in

I don't know all the rules to create a forum, but I know one rule is that for a manufacturer's subforum to open, a representative from the manufacturer must be present. Kershaw would have to step up. Don't know what else would have to happen.

Gakker, with Kershaw, Shun, and Zero Tolerance knives all under Kai USA, of course we don't suck. We are having a tough time finding time to manage a sub forum, that's all. We will have to see what the future holds.

lol...well, "suck" isn't a word I'd associate with Kershaw, but everyone has their own opinions.

It may be just me, but Kershaw doesn't seem to catch the same attention or have as much exposure as some other companies here in the BF. So naturally, I bought from those other companies. Then I had the opportunity to buy my first Kershaw,a Splinter, for $25, and wow, that little guy was impressive. The quality, fit and finish, and the materials used are excellent. I've bought plenty of other Kershaw's and IMO, Kershaw is truly a top notch company that are producing excellent knives. Plus, the customer service is awesome. For example my torsion bar on my Spec Bump snapped...I made a call...and three days later, I get a package of 2 torsion bars. I didnt even get a chance to miss the Speed Safe! Get a couple of more Kershaw knives Gakker, and perhaps you can join in our enthusiasm!

C'mon I was being facetious! I know they dont suck... just seems odd that there isnt a sub forum for them. Someone has to ask the hard questions

If its required that Kershaw needs to request the sub forum, then I would think that their Salesman1 would step up and make the effort. I think this thread shows that there is enough interest here at this site to justify the 10 minutes it would take to get the sub forum going. (more facetiousness)

I just purchased a kershaw blackout 1550 this weekend. I have already used it and it has a scratch in the black coating on the blade. Does anyone know if it is supposed to scratch easily and is there a way to renew the black coating?

Thanks,

JD the black coating on anything will scratch. Even the toughest ones like the Walter Birdsong Blact T finish scratch. You should see the BlackOut I gave my son to take to Iraq with him for his 14 month tour there. It is basically a two tone blade now. Hasn't stopped him from using it to death though.

Think of it as a business investment. If you don't start a subforum, I'll stop buying so many Kershaw/ZT knives!

OK, I lied. I won't stop buying them. But...I'll stop playing with them so much.

Nah. That's a lie, too.

"Hello, I'm Dog Man, and I'm a knife buying addict."

Hey Thomas, are you guys still going to do the initial run of Groove folders in a different steel, or is it going to be like the JYDs and have the swedish stuff right from the start? I didn't read through the whole thread, but just wanted to ask since that was the last info I had. Good to see you around as well!

Thomas,

For those of us who dont know, can you give us a break down of KAI USA?

Thanks!

Trust me Gakker, you aren't the first person to want a Kershaw Forum, but you seem to be implying that BF doesn't have a Kershaw Forum because of Kershaw's lack of effort. Your sarcasm aside, it does take a lot more time than you realize to moderate a forum and to adequately represent a great company like Kershaw/KAI.

From what I've been told, the first run of JYDs and Grooves will be 440A, with the Sandvik versions later this year. Thomas can probably clarify.

Well, in post #5 of this thread Thomas said:
"The Kershaw/Tim Galyean JYD's will be released next month. Unlike earlier information, all JYD's will be done in 13C26 steel."

But he didn't mention anything about the Grooves. I know that the first runs of BOTH the JYDs and the Groove were going to be in 440A (which I'd pass on), but since he made the announcement about the JYD I thought I'd ask about the Groove as well.

SpyderJon, the first run of Grooves are done up in 440A, and will be marked as such. I believe there are a couple hundred pieces.

The future Grooves as well as both JYD's will be done up in 13C26. These will all be out in Dec. There will be no JYD's in 440A. Actually there will be no 440A in any of our future offerings, as we are changing over those models that incorporated 440A to 13C26 (Blur's, Leek's, Blackout, Whirlwind's,Baby Boa, Centofante/Onions, and Mini Mojo's).

Gakker, Kai Corp is based out of Seki City Japan, and purchased Kershaw Knives back in 1976. It has been a goal to establish top notch production here in the US, of which IMO we currently have. Kai USA has currently formulated 3 brand names: Kershaw Knives, Zero Tolerance Knives, and Shun kitchen cutlery.

We have great confidence in each branch of the company (Kai USA), and will continue to put forth our best effort in continuing to produce quality cutlery for you all.

Thanks for the update Thomas! I'll be waiting for the 13C26 Groove, but plan to get that small JYD framelock as soon as it comes out! Thanks, again!

Thomas,
Are the Kershaw branded knives made here in the US or both or not?

Thanks!

Currently we have about 70% of the Kershaw line produced here in Oregon. The remaining balance of knives are done in Japan and a few are done up in China. All SpeedSafe assisted openers are made in the US, as are all ZT knives. The Shun kitchen cutlery is made in Japan.

We are on a big kick to continue to produce more and more of our product line here at the Oregon factory. We have found that we are able to produce quality USA made knives at affordable price points for the masses (without sacrificing materials or tolerances), as well as establishing high end USA production for those that need it. This is our current focus and direction of which I am sure many are pleased with.

While there seems to be more and more companies utilizing imports as their core products, or as a way to stay competitive, it is a trend we have little to do with.

C'mon... I get my day job done and have time to bug you guys :p They could just get some dude who is geeked for Kershaw to moderate the sub forum. Anyhow... speaking of day job, I'd better get back to mine. :o

I'm psyched that the lower-end leeks will be getting the sandvik steel, seems like an upgrade to me.

Well, thanx for taking time out to bug us Gakker:). This forum was getting alittle slow, so perhaps it needed alittle life.

Great to see Kershaw's keeping most of their knives coming out of the USA. I'm definitely pleased with the new focus...cuz I aint gonna have to worry about consistency. Good to hear about a company thoughtful about their relationship with the consumers!
