Knife in Progress.

I dropped it and rolled the point slightly, If I tapped it back to shape, would that cause stresses in the steel that may cause it to fail?

The progress on this blade is phenomenal, it's changed design a couple of times but I think it's coming together great! Pretty well rounded design, suitable for hunting, bushcraft, and a fairly good back-up for combat. Nice Work :)

Thanks, Matt!

These dents are really bothering me, The biggest thing I have learnt on this knife is not to ever use vice grips as they are and to never let it fall on the floor.

So Is it alright to bend back bent edges? Sorry for being impatient but I want to heat treat this soon.

You dented the edges? or the tip?

This is mostly asked as a question for myself out of curiosity. But would it be better to tap them back while you're heat treating?

O well, guess you'll just have to start over again.

a little bit of both, the tip mostly, it fell off of my bench and bounced a few times.

Keith,

These are guesses... yeah, I know, doesn't do you the kind of good you're looking for.

* Try tapping it back straight while cold...light and slow as possible. Theory is the O1 is spheroidized anneal and, at least with some steels (O1 may not be one of them... Kevin says Crucible L6 isn't), they will cold forge in that condition.
* Stress relieve is 1200F - 1250F. Could heat to that... would still have some black in the red, like dusty red (if you've got a dark room), and tap it back. Theory being the metal is relaxing and you won't be taking it out of the condition it is already in. Keep it at temp. when you tap it back (it ain't going to come out perfect, you know), a little tap a little heat. When you are done tapping, get it dusty red again and let it air cool.
* If both of the above are true, tap it back cold then heat it to 1200F-125F and air cool.

One last thing... you know what, "in theory" means, right? Means, not really. Sorry Keith, couldn't help myself.

Mike

I tapped them back gently with a hammer because I couldn't grind them out, It is good to know that is fine. Looks great now. I will give it a stress relieving step just to be certain. If this one cracks I will be busy!

Yes in theory, but It has to work (cue me repeating "yes we can" to music with celebrities :D)

I have it all sanded and the holes are drilled, I will be heat treating and tempering tomorrow. Wish me luck!

I heat treated it today!

The oven we have is small, so I had to put it in diagonally. It does not have any settings, just a dial (with the numbers 1-8 on it but I don't know what they mean) and a thermometer with a needle showing the temperature in increments of 50 degrees. I started with a stress relieving stage then air cooled. After air cooling I brought it up to around 1475 and soaked for 15 mins. I fumbled with the tongs trying to pick it up and put it in on a weird angle because my arm was twisted, but all went fine.

I tried tempering it the oven but I could not get a temperature that was low enough. I set the dial to the lowest settings but had to repeatedly open and close the door to maintain the temperature. I only got in about 30 mins of tempering. I will gets some pictures up soon!

I am a little disappointed because I tried filing it a little on the edge and spine and it bit into it. Any suggestions?

Oh no, lucky you used o1 at least.

you sure the thermometer was accurate?

I'm not sure, It was built into the oven via a thermocouple, so I don't know what went wrong. It was the right colour though. It is pretty hard, but not hard enough where my file will skate on it.

It should skate a file after hardening, before tempering. It's not that unusual for a good file to bite a bit after tempering. Another thing, with steels like O-1 that require longer soaks, you'll likely get a bit of decarb on the surface. You may have to sand down a bit to get to the good stuff.

I filed it after the hardening using one of the school's files and I thought it skated, but I am not sure if it was just the fact that they aren't the sharpest. Maybe I am just over reacting.
