Knife in Progress.

keith, try using just the corner of the file. to keep from making a deep groove, dont press hard at first. if it skates with light pressure, increase pressure gradually. i test with an old file and if the blade is soft, it will dig in somewhat.

Another thing, with steels like O-1 that require longer soaks, you'll likely get a bit of decarb on the surface. You may have to sand down a bit to get to the good stuff.

He soaked it 15 min. at austenitizing temp.

Blade not forged, normalized, etc. so decarb. shouldn't be high. A person hears 0.004" - 0.005" decarb if forged with good process control.

I sent my knife to Nick Wheeler to get heat treated, I appreciate his generosity, as he probably has (I shouldn't say better :)) other things to do (unlike me who has no job and taking one academic course in school)

Anyway, It took 4 week days for the package to get to Nick, and that was before Christmas when things are busy. He sent the package on December 29, 8 business days now, I am not too worried about it, I am pretty patient but I just wanted to say that I am not doing nothing ;)

I am going to start a new project in the mean time, a 4" hunter/bushcraft knife in 1/8" 1095 that I was going to put a curly maple handle with stainless bolsters on it.

You haven't gotten it yet Keith?!?! Gosh dang it! I better go up to the PO and see what the heck is going on.:grumpy:

Good job Keith it sounds like you got the bug and your knife is looking good.
Keith can you temper in your oven at home or do you know someone with a toster oven
hope this helps.

Sorry for not keeping you up to speed. My knife is being shipped back from Nick Wheeler right now, 60rc!

I am glad everything came out right... Somehow I had the feeling it had been lost by the postal service, right? Maybe lost is not the word... we could use... misplaced :D :D

Let us know when you recive it and post pictures of the process!

Nick tells me that "they screwed up somehow and had placed it on a shelf for packages waiting for customers to pick up... rather than an outbound shelf."
I expect to get the package tomorrow or the day after (longer depending on customs) I promise to post pictures! I am excited because I know that it is a good steel, O1,that I put a thin edge on it and that Nick did an excellent job on the heat treatment. It should be a nice cutter.

Wooops! Just noticed you are not in the US but in Canada. Be pleased your postal service allows this kind of items over the mail. Here in Spain we can't do that. If we send the packages insured or something, they get all Xrayed and if something seems pointy, knife-like or just weird... they won't deliver it. I had a hell of a time sending my knife to the US. First I tried to send it myself and I recived it back (14€ down the drain). Then I sent it via packaging service to a forumite of Armas Blancas (Spanish Cutlery Forum) who is an authorized dealer and can do this kind of shipping (another 14€), then he finally delivered the package to the US and I paid for that shipping as well (18 € more). So there you have it, 46€ (like $60) to send my knife to the US. The package I recived was marked like 15$ at most, can't actually remember. Go figure. I am seriously considering not participating in this years Christmas Knife Exchange... :(

By the way, I am sick of making small knives with thick blades (al crafted from 5mm or thicker leaf spring) due to not having stock of the appropiate thickness. I also have to wonder about the steel because not all the spring steel is 5160 (doesn't actually matter that much, my heath treat is going to be the same anyway :D). ¿Were do you guys buy O1 flat ground stock in fully annealed state? I was thinking about 3mm at most for small knives. ¿Is it going to be rigid enough to work with files in my jig or do I absolutely need a belt grinder?

Mikel

Sorry to hear about the shipping fiasco!
I buy steel from knifemaker.ca, so I can't help you there, but Nick's idea of supporting it with angle iron really kept it rigid.

Before you guys hammer on Keith too hard, let me admit that I sort of screwed the pooch and managed to let over a month slip by before I came up with a way to get his blade shipped back. It's tough for me, not getting home from school until 8pm most days.

Now if it's made it there now, or as soon as it does... he'll have some good reasons to get a couple of things done ;) :)

I should have been keeping this thread up to date anyway, The knife is in customs, so I should get it early next week I think.

I started a new knife that I will use as a backup in case something catastrophic happens to this one. I have been using the angle grinder a really nice new file that is good for draw filing and a nice new respirator. I have it profiled and one of the bevels is pretty much done.

Good news!

My knife came today!! :D

Nick did a great job heat treating it: 60rc all over. He lightly surface ground it to get an accurate reading (at least an hour in my crappy school oven caked it with decarb) and inadvertently solved my problem of the marks on the ricasso, which I spent a long time trying to lap out with sandpaper. As for the warp on the edge? Gone! Nick shaped it with heat and a wooden hammer over stainless, good as new!
Of course I think that my design isnt very attractive anymore, I liked my first knife but now think that it is ugly, I liked my second knife (this one) but now think that the blade is too wide and the handle profile not crisp enough, I think that it is a nice progression :) I think that my new design for a knife is nice, but you can probably guess what I will think of it in a year or so!
Nick also gave me a really nice O1 blade for me to put a handle on, which I am very happy to receive. (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6445635&postcount=1) What a great guy!

Thank you very much, Nick!

Keith- I'm glad it got there :)

I don't think it's ugly at all... in fact I was really impressed with your sense of design... for your first knife none-the-less!

Just FYI- your blade is similar to that one, but it is a different one. I made some changes to the one I sent your way. Hope you have fun with it. :)
