Knife in Progress.

Ive been sanding the one side with the a/o emery cloth... I hate sanding! it seems like the grit falls off after 30 seconds of sanding and furthermore, I have a small scratch in the middle and a leftover file scratch right at the plunge :( I guess I will have to go a grit lower...

I remember asking my shop teacher (who hates puns and such jokes)
"Is woven abrasive the knitty gritty?"
:D

Is the paper wet/dry? It doesn't sound like it is, I get some paper from Barbkat on ebay, it's called Gatorgrit and it seems to last longer and cut better than the 3M auto paper I was using.

Keith- I should have put some various sand papers in the box... didn't even think about it though.

Will, is the stuff she is selling the same kind that Lowes used to sell? Matt Roberts turned me on to that stuff, and it was great on my disc sander. Now I'm using the Rhyno stuff from SuperGrit (on my 9" disc) and it's the cat's pj's. Thanks to Burt Foster for that tid-bit :)

I have wet/dry but it is only in the higher grits. My guess is that I am on about 120 now.

Wow. I have been really neglectful of Robert's knife (this one)
I have kind of been stuck into a rut with this. I have been feeling crappy about myself too and have not been getting into the shop.

Today I tried some more to get the small scratch near the plunge out with the 220 a/o, which was what I sent it to Nick as. I then switched to 320 wet dry, it is almost ready for the 400.

How do you guys hand sand? I have been using a 8"x2"x3/16" piece of precision ground O1 as a block and cutting the paper into 2" strips.

I am excited to sharpen this thing! I measured the edge, and it is around 0.008"

Keith,

The knife looked really good last time you posted a picture. Can we see the progress?

sure, there isn't much more done, and it is hard to photograph the sanding in this light.

This is how I got it back from Nick. He did a good job and the blade is quite clean. I think he may have used some sort of light abrasive to clean off the crud I left on there. Below it is the nice little knife he sent me. I will get some nice wood and corbies and finish that one, it should turn out nice!
Nick surface ground my knife, showing if the grinds were even, which they were pretty close IMO.

Thanks for posting the pictures! That really looks great. I can tell you have put a lot of time and effort into your work. Keep us posted on your progress, I'm interested in seeing the full finished product!

Keith
It's looking real nice i like the blade shape with the slight dropped handle.
Keep up the good work and thanks for the update.

Thanks for the comments, guys!
I was thinking of using the 1/4" jade green G10/FR1 stuff for the handles, I also have 1/16" black micarta that I think may look nice as a liner, but it may look tacky.
Then again a dense wood might be nice. There is some wood sold locally as boards: ebony, cocobolo etc. or I could buy some stabilized stuff from Rob Ridley. Decisions,decisions... :)

I bought some Arizona desert ironwood and stainless corby bolts for the knife that nick sent me today at the local gun show from Rob and Marilyn. (I also got about 5.5' of 1.5x0.125" 1080 and some orange G10.)

But now I am starting to think that the ironwood might be nice on this knife. Should I get more wood from them tomorrow and use this or stick with the G10?

I like G-10 with the black liner but I'll bet the desert ironwood would look really great with the liner as well on that blade.

Thanks for the input. I could also get some vulcanized spacer today as well. So many choices! I wish I put 3/16 holes in this so that I could use the corby bolts. :(

Ok, it has been over month since I posted...
I am ashamed over my hesitance with finishing this. I have no excuses this time.

I will post what I have done tomorrow. By the end of saturday I hope to have the blade ready to glue up.

How do you personally hand sand? I prefer the "machine" look of the scratch pattern going perpendicular to the blade rather than parallel to it (which looks easier) At the moment I am using a 8"x2" piece of precision ground o1 steel as block and cutting the paper into 2" strips with wd40 on the blade.
Oh and I forgot to mention, I have around 50-100 sheets of 600 grit sand paper and a hole lot of 320, 400 :D
