Knife in Progress.

(Winces) Not really...
I don't think I have a really bad work ethic, but I have never had a job, so I am not sure anymore

So what are you saying i am not going to get a knife? :grumpy: Never having had a job has nothing to do with standing behind your word. After all your the one that made the commitment and had no problem taking my knife.:jerkit:

Just do it!... They look sweet and deserve to be finished... The more you think on unfinished knife the more it will take to complete. I was nit-picking about my unfinished knives before and took ages to complete. Now I decide a completion date and I work like mad to finish at that due date, mostly never finished that day but it speeds up the progress for sure... You have finished these knives about % 80, they just need scales and pins to be attached, no worries, it will take a couple of hours to complete even with simplest tools...

No, you will get the knife, but it will be in June. I feel bad for not standing behind my word but still taking your knife. I meant that I don't know how well I work and that I might need the job experience to learn how to work hours. Sorry, I understand what it would be like giving and the other just taking.

Keith if you don't finish that knife in a week I'm stealing it and finishing it for you. It's too nice to sit handleless.

Thanks, Galadduin

Ok, I have one side done to 600 and the edges done to 320. I will get some pics up after I finish the other side (There is a scratch I am working out)

I would like to know what you think: Arizona desert ironwood or green g10, and whether or not I should put on the 1/16" micarta liners.

Thanks Eric, but I am finishing this sucker! :)

Hey Keith,no offense but you should feel shame.I made mine for Stacy, and due to health reasons,(which i am still dealing with)did not get it mailed until the first week in Jan.I really felt bad about that.On June 13th i am having some cut out and i will be started on this years knife.

You need to put a handle on that thing and get Robert his knife.I'm sure you are out of school,so time should not be an issue.I say you should have it in the mail(express shipping) by the middle of the week.

Again i say please don't take this the wrong way.

I understand, I got into a sort of funk, I can't really describe it without sounding that selfish.
My timeline so far is: Tang sandblasted on monday, handle glued up on tuesday (I am busy all Monday evening) shaped on wednesday and possibly finished, then I have to make a sheath for it.

I sandblasted it today, we didn't have any air yesterday. I am in cadets, so all evening yesterday I was there. tonight I will cut out the handle. I decided to use the ironwood. I bought two sets of ADE scales from Rob!, one has more figure but is really dark and the other has lots of contrast. I think I will go with the latter, mainly because there is a small (it is not a crack, but a crevasse, if that makes sense?) in the dark swirly one. Should be fun.

I am having second thoughts about the micarta liners, it is made for electronics, so the colour might look dingy.

A kid cut some arizona desert ironwood at school a few weeks ago and it seemed to kind of gum up our bandsaw blade, should I just use my normal metal cutting blade?

I was a little hesitant to finish this because there was a tenacious scratch that was giving me problems, but i have it pretty much out.
Well I was feeling guilty again, so I got out the scratch, cut out the scales and flattened them. Tomorrow I will shape the front of the handles, drill the handle holes and glue the handles on. I want to use some good, strong epoxy, but I only have the 5 min stuff.

If I use the black micarta liners, would JB weld still look ugly?

You will be better off to finish it the best you can, with whatever you've got, than to put it off. I promise you that. I learned it the hard way and lost a customer.

JB weld can show as a thin grey line. Not a big deal.

Thanks for the reply. I think I have taken so long that I have already lost any sort of credibility. It will never happen again with one of my projects.

Does anybody have a photo of the glue line from JB weld? It held up really well in the glue wars.

stop faffing and just glue it! JB weld will look fine, just make sure you don't put too much on, a thin even coating on all mating faces is sufficient

I have heard of putting Vaseline on the front of the handles to resist the epoxy, does that work? I am pretty close to gluing this up, does anybody have any tips for a good glue up and keeping gaps to a minimum?

I don't think I will put in a thong hole. I drilled a hole, but it is a little low for my liking.

I believe James and Nathan when they say that JB weld will look alright, but I am a little worried that it will be noticeable.

Thanks.

Maybe the clear, weaker epoxy would be better?
I tend to get stuck on details...
