Just talked to my bank. Pretty much they said theres nothing they can do as far as forcing the vender to release the money back to my account. They said they have to give him a chance to correct the situation. If hes not willing to work with me then i can come in and file paperwork. So prettymuch im out $370.00 until whatever knife he shipped me comes in then i ship it back and wait til he receives it to refund me.

Paperwork? Man, you need a new bank. I've been using a credit & debit card for 20 years and I've been put through the ringer with some misplaced charges, but not once was I ever asked to come in and start paperwork. The 1-800 number on the back of the card was all I needed to call and once I explained the situation, they got the wheels in motion. Money was returned to me within 24 hours and everything cleared up within 5-7 days.

I agree. Call the credit card company and tell them the charge was unauthorized after the first transaction was cancelled by agreement of both parties. Let them deal with the vendor. If the cc company can t take care of it for you, change companies. Then just return the knife to cancel the transaction yourself.

Get yourself a credit card and put your debit card away.
:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

You should always use CREDIT cards for purchases and keep your Debit card for emergency "need cash now" use only.

CC will immediately reverse disputed or unauthorized charges with just a phone call. DC charge reversals are much harder and take a long time.

Consider yourself lucky it's 'only' $350. If a real crook gets your DC info, your bank acct will be sucked dry instantly.

You should also have a separate bank acct with no links to any cards or other accts as your 'main' acct.

Good luck!

In fact, your credit card issuer will specify how charges are disputed and most require a written notice of dispute, some on a form that they provide. Don't take anyone's word for it. Contact your credit card company and ask how they require a dispute to be entered.

I did call the number on the card and a machine said all they can do from there is cancel or shut down lost or stolen cards. Anything else has to be taken up with the bank thats issuing it. $370 is alot of money to me. I am greatful that i have a good paying job that allows me to buy what i consider expensive knives. But losing $370 is alot of money to me. At this point i dont know if i evan trust this fred guy to evan refund me after i send him back his knife. Thats why im trying to figure out a different way to handle this.

IF he sent you what you were looking for- worse case is you have a second brous and can sell one of them for close to what you paid (hopefully)... if you didn't want to deal with Fred anymore. Not sure what the depreciation is on a Brous or how fast you can flip it, but it might be worth a few dollar loss than to continue to deal with Fred for the extra. That's your call though.

Get yourself a credit card and put your debit card away. You are much more protected in every transaction when you use a credit vs. debit card. That's why the banks push debit and debit/credit cards. If you pay your credit card off every month, the credit card is feee and you can cash in your points for cash.

I have refused every attempt by my bank to issue me a debit card. I simply will not have a card that allows someone to withdraw funds directly from my checking account.

The dispute process with a credit card involves the card company trying to make you give them the money you still have. The dispute process with a debit card involves you begging your bank to give your money BACK. I don't want to ever be in that situation.

similar thought- about 10-15 years ago, someone used my debit number (identity theft) to order online and ship to a totally different country and it still took me weeks to get back my own money... after that I applied for a C/C and never used a debit again for any type of online transactions... if someone hacks/steals a c/c number you don't lose anything other than some time- someone hacks/steals a debit card number and you are without the cash until it gets resolved.

I never really thought about getting rid of a debit card all together and just using a credit card instead. The only thing that i wouldnt like about not having a debit card is if i ever need quick cash for something. If banks are closed there would be no way for me to get cash instantly because i dont like carrying cash on me. As far as the knife. I would rather just sell whatever knife i get from fred to get my money back. Just so i dont have to deal with that guy again because i dont know if i evan trust him with any kind of transaction having to do with my money, but at the same time i do not want to give his business any of my money. I do not want to put money in the pocket of any dealer who treats their customers in the way he has treated me and others from what ive read. The knife should be at my door tomorrow. So well have to wait and see what this "mystery knife" is.

i dont think you should ditch the debit alltogether for the reason you mentioned, but i would reserve it only for getting cash and never for actual purchases (especially online).

Call the bank or other financial institution that services your card. Tell whoever answers that you need to report a fraudulent transaction involving the card. If you can't get satisfactory results directly from your bank, call whichever company services your card, either Visa or MasterCard and escalate your claim.

The person you tried to order the knife from used your account fraudulently and illegally, tell your bank that you want them to pursue criminal prosecution.

A bank teller has zero authority over your card, your account, or the resolution of a fraudulent usage of your card.

The bank should be able to cancel the transaction and credit your account while you're on the phone with them, they will normally then send you a form to fill out outlining the details of the transaction that you return to them while they do their own investigation. If they won't, get a new bank and get a credit card to use for future online purchases and a separate ATM/debit card to be used for obtaining cash at an ATM.

Victims "waiting to see what happens" is how thieves like the one you dealt with get away with theft. It's your money, go get it back.

I was about to post virtually the exact thing....

A couple years ago, my debit card was compromised at a local restaurant. They racked up a couple thousand in small charges but the bank themselves caught it, notified me and returned the money within 48 hours. My debit card is as safe as any cc. Other issues have been taken care of in an equally satisfactory and prompt manner in the past. I guess I just have a good bank.

could also be that banks have caught up with the times for the most part... 10-15 years ago when it happened to me, identity theft and how it relates to online purchasing were relatively rare- and now that it has unfortunately become more prevalent, I think banks have more plans of action in place to resolve quickly

I am going to call the bank back tomorrow and demand to talk to the bank manager about this. I only talked to one of the tellers earlier, so tomorrow i will talk to the manager and get this figured out and hopefully get my money back.

Did you talk to a manager? Hoping this gets resolved for you brother.

Ive called both branches today a few times a piece cant get a hold of the manager left messages on both machines asking for a call back but no call back yet. My bank in the past seems like the keep a pretty good eye out for fraudulent activity. Ive got calls from them before anytime my card was used online for back to back transactions. They just recently called me and replaced my card because they said it was compromised through a target store i used it at and shut it down immeditaely and sent me a new one. So i mean usually they are on top of that kind of stuff. Its not like its a horrible bank. I just wish this bank manager was easier to get a hold of so i could figure this out. The knife he shipped me is supposed to be in tomorrow and whatever i decide to do with it, regardless its not getting sent back until i get my money back first. I dont have enough trust in this fred guy to send him back his knife before i get my money back. Since there really is no paper trail or emails to evan back up this second transaction.

I literally just got a call back from the manager. She told me to come in tomorrow morniing and fill out paper work for an un auorized transaction. They will dispute it and my money will be returned to my account within 48 hours. But unfortunately she said my debit card will have to be shut down immediately and they will have to issue me a new one which takes up to 2 weeks. So either way i get the crap end of the stick. I get my money back but then im with no debit card for 2 weeks which is how i access all my money.

Contrary to what you wrote above, it is in fact a horrible bank.

2 weeks to activate a magnetic strip? That's ridiculous.

Good luck. I'd empty my accounts and find a local credit union.

Ya i guess there are some pros and cons with the credit union i use. Probably is eith every bank out there. I keep referring to it as a bank. It is a local credit union.

I have an online style bank thats provided thru my work since they do direct deposit only so if you dont have a checking accout they give you one. My account was compromised a few years ago, someone in france bought train tickets on my card 3x before I caught it. My bank wanted me to file a police report, and they mailed me paper work which I had to fill out and get notarized and it would take upto 90 days for the money to be put back. It was day 95 when I finally got back $300.
