Knifemakers Christmas season gift exchange!

Oh and I'd call the pattern "Serene Lake". It kind of looks like what you would see looking out over a pond or lake with a light breeze stirring up small waves....

When I first read this, I read "Seneca Lake" in my head. Which is a lake in SE Ohio. My family had a cottage there for about 35 years. We just sold it about 3 years ago. I miss that place badly. I'd love to be able to go back there sometime.

ok here is mine so far. it needs a little more pollishing and a sheath and my name and its all set to go out. what you think. man the handle fits my hand very very good as well as every one else that has held it.

That is a classic! Nice job on that. I can't imagine anyone not being pleased with that.

Very nice indeed Todd. I especially like the effect you got with multiple wide spacers of different metals. May have to try that some day.

Here is my exchange knife
My picture isn't as good and I don't know about the knife either. LOL
5160 flat ground 4" blade with a bit of file work
Ziricote handle with brass guard and cap and a buffalo horn spacer. I hope someone enjoys it. Jim

Looks very nice Jim. I like the brass, looks good with the color of wood in the handle.

Wish I could participate in this one, but I think I'll be waiting until next year.

Well I amde a little progress this weekend, got it drilled and heat treated, bolsters installed, scales cut and fitted and it's all sitting glued up in the clamps now.
So maybe a few pic's tommorrow afer some rough finishing.
Stan

Finished beveling mine the other morning (takes a bit on a 1x30 but it's what I have for now). Heat treated it today and it's looking pretty good so far. Now to clean it up, put some handles (leaning towards cobolo), sharpen it up then a sheath. Should be able to get that done before the big day.

It'll be a good user I believe, not the prettiest thing but it is my 6th knife and my 2nd flat ground.

I'll post some pics later as well.

Well, I've made some major decisions on my gift knife. I'm going OLD. Really, really, really OLD. I've spent the entire day working on slotting and shaping the wrought iron guard. When I got it done, I decided it needed more. Most of the suggestions for my "wispy smoke damascus" (yes, I've chosen a name for it) knife leaned towards the wrought iron and elk. But, after careful consideration, I've decided to go really OLD. Did I already say that?

I decided to add a second wrought piece to the guard with a spacer between it. The spacer I've chosen is a piece of dinosaur bone that has been sitting in my shop waiting for just the right knife. For the handle I'm going to use mammoth bone. The dinosaur bone has a nice chocolate brown color with a neat cellular pattern. The mammoth bone also has a nice chocolate brown color with some fine hairline cracking. I really believe this will be the best knife I've made to date.

So, the wrought iron is probably over 100 years OLD, since it came from the rim of a wagon wheel. The mammoth bone is at least 10,000 years OLD. The dinosaur bone is millions of years OLD.

Did I say I was going OLD on this knife? The only concern that I have is drilling the dinosaur bone for the tang. I haven't tried drilling it yet, but we'll see what happpens!

Wish me luck!

Thats old, old and older. I am sure it will be great and make someone happy.

Hey. Tom that blade we worked on a couple weeks ago is now a completed knife and is posted in the gallery under gents. I used a piece of that Amboyna burl you were looking at for the handle along with some brass and buffalo horn.

5 in the works right now, should be looking more like cutlery latter in the week.

Here is a pic of one just more done then the others:

Cont. from above,,,,,

Here are the other 4 , just door-stops now, finish time vs shipping time to make it under the tree, will decide what one is the gift knife.

I went to a knife show this last weekend and picked up a bunc of different handle material, and I settled on a block of quilted sycamore for the handle on this knife. I need to drill the right holes and file out for the hidden tang now. I'm talking with a company right now about getting stencils made for my electroetcher so I can mark the blade as well.

I'm getting closer to finishing but it feels like everything's slowing to a crawl !
