Knifemakers Christmas season gift exchange!

Here's what I'll be sending out. Made it about a year ago --
I've got to cheat this year -- there's no way I'd get a new one
finished in time.

O1, convex ground, 3 5/8" to the guard, 8" overall.
Handle is the first piece of Mike Spenger's stabilized
maple burl I got with a copper guard and small mosaic
pin. The burl is much lighter than it looks in these pics.

I have to learn to make sheaths one of these days. That's
why it was still here. Maybe I'll get my first one made in
time, but maybe not.

That is an incredible knife! I'm just blown away. Nice grind, nice design, and the handle material is spectacular! Great knife!

I don't think it's cheating either. The knife that I'm going to be giving was forged into a bar last year and then from bar to a small hunter back in April. I just finished up the tang and got it hardened. It's tempering as I type this.

AH!:grumpy: both blades went PING! when i quenched. tisk tisk. i think iv had enough of the 1080 im using. ill be forging out some good old 5160 tomoro and remaking both of them. im so upset, i need to rethink what im doing with the 1080, thats three out of 4 that have cracked.:jerkit:
i'll be using some black felt mycarta with red liner when i get the new blades done.

all these knives look awesome! im so exited!

-Lou

I've never had a blade go "ping" yet. and........just by saying that, I've probably jinxed myself. The next one will probably be the one that goes "ping".

I have a bunch of 1080 in my bins, but have yet to try it. That's when I'll probably hear a ping.

I've being doing some 1084 over here on this side of town, Lou- how are you quenching? I'm using the standard heated oil, no real problems.

How much 1080 you got, anyway :)

I finished up the tang on my Christmas knife and then hardened and tempered it. I had six other knives ready for hardening and tempering, so I did them all at one time.

Oh, and I forged the Newbie Hunting knife today too! It's in the vermiculite right now. Check out the newbie thread. Lots of new pictures!

Robert,
That is absolutely spectacular. If you want, I can have my wife email you the name and address of the person that you have. What is your email address?

This is it so far. It needs some more work before h/t but you get the idea.
Sorry for the crappy fast pics!

I drill the holes fit the scales and do most of the shaping before heat treat. Then I take it all apart. H/T finish sand the bade epoxy on the scales and then finish the handle.
I do this so I will not have to do any heavy grinding after H/T only fine sanding.
