Knives and Toilet Paper?

TP is the least of my concerns. We normally hit Costco very six weeks or so and bulk up on paper goods. Washing is more sanitary to be honest. One problem I have is my kitchen habit of single use paper towels. I’ll need to start using cloth kitchen towels instead. Not a huge adjustment.

Those half sheet paper towels work well, but my wife does not like them for the kitchen. To me you waste half of them with the full sheet size. I do the same thing at Sam's Club and one of the dominant purposes of making the store visit at least every few months.

I stocked up on TP about two weeks ago, as I was down to about two 9 roll packs at that point. That closet is now full of TP (top shelf stacked to the ceiling). No I don't watch for sales on TP. I just buy it.

Sam's Club sells bar wipes that work well in the kitchen. They are not high quality cotton wipe cloths. I use them for work stuff so I have a pretty good supply. I just have to convince my helpers that they aren't "rags".

Bounty is my preferred choice. We always used them in my restaurant kitchens. C-folds are the worst. My optometrist also recommends them for cleaning eyeglasses. The half sheet rolls have been available consistently.

I use paper towels more than I should for cleaning eye glasses. If you get the ones with the glare reduction coating, they will scratch with paper towels. I was a Bounty person too until I started buying the Sam's Club brand a number of years ago... both TP and paper towels. I suspect Costco is the same. The towels are probably made by Bounty anyway.... who knows. I just like them. I hate to buy stuff like this and hence buy a pile of it all at once when I do.

I couple years ago I switched to really trying to use kitchen towels more. I've done pretty good. Down to about 1 roll of choose a size paper towels every week and a half or so. I use at least one kitchen towel a day, through it in with the laundry on hot (or water gets really really hot).

I think lots of us are going to change many bad or expensive habits because of this whole situation, and keep them up after it's over.

As a food handler one consistent requirement by municipal health departments from NY to CA has for decades been to use single service paper products to minimize cross contamination.

In your own home? That's what I'm talking about.

Because I don't board things and because it's really not as important as people seem to think.
If you run out just shower.
You don't board things?

Tell you what, go without it for a month and then tell me how important you think it is. Personally, I can afford $30 of TP and I don't consider having a months worth of TP hoarding. But hey, you do you.

View attachment 1306735 I must admit to being surprised at the number of people caught with no tp or meat or well...anything. I have spent my entire life in “ fly over” country. We deal with life a bit differently out here I guess. We are never without a months worth of meat , can goods, frozen veggies and paper goods including TP. Growing up I remember several time my old man not being able to get home from town for a week because of weather but it was fine and so were we because he made sure we were always stocked up. I guess I learned the same.

People have found humor in all of History's atrocities... if you are butt hurt over a toilet paper joke you should just take the stick out of your....

I'm not, this whole thing just doesn't seem like much of a situation to make fun of considering that the virus is Killing people.

On a very personal level, I cannot nor will not speak for anybody else, I choose not to let the situation get me all stressed out.

On another note, I don't use paper products of any kind to clean my glasses. Paper products are made from wood and wood can scratch. I use an old cotton cloth that gets thrown in the wash from time to time.

Speaking of wood, I guess people think TP grows on trees...wait a minute....

Okay guys. Let's get serious. First, remember that people have different circumstances. Some people don't have a lot of storage space. Some people have big families or lots of kids. Some people were at the end of their normal wait period between stocking up at the local big-buy store. So don't knock people who need toilet paper now. If you have extra, consider helping them. In the meantime, most of us still have soap and water aplenty. It's not the end of the world.

OK Timbo , I'll play ............. :D

Showering two or three times a day sucks. I like to be clean, but some things are a bit much.;)

Some people look down on people who work retail.... they might be a major segment that actually have jobs. But WM has reduced hours and I'm sure that means a reduction in staff for a time. However it appears that Sam's Club is hiring. I just got an email from them. I like how the UK and other places are asking retired health professionals to return to work for a time. This is a very good idea. But it won't change the general bias against 55+ people getting jobs whether or not the government admits it or not.... there is a lot of discrimination in this area.

I don't hoard things either. But I try to keep well supplied in the things we use all the time. That said, one person's normal supply is hoarding to another. On the TP thing, sometimes things happen just at the wrong time.... or just about when you would normally stock up... and then there is no product. This will change quickly.

I think about the folks in the big cities.... take public transportation to work and return, bike and so forth.... not much room for taking home a big haul of groceries and general household supplies like TP. These people are generally the least prepared for any kind of emergency where you shelter in place for more than a day or two.

We have to keep our TP elevated so our cats don't decide to spend the night ripping up TP. We have been blessed with that sight more than once in the AM. It is usually just one roll however. The cute doggies could certainly lay waste to a lot of TP.

A butt-er knife might be the answer. Good one! For some reason, I keep thinking apple butter.

I pray that the virus peters out very soon. I have had zero business since the first case in TN.

Had a siamese once. We always kept a roll ready to replace the one on the roller so no one was ever caught off guard. One day she came out of the bathroom with the whole roll hanging out of her mouth. She stopped, looked around, then bolted. It was the funniest thing I've ever seen a cat do. She wasn't a big cat... The roll was easily twice the size of her head!

Miss that cat...she could be mean, but was really sweet most of the time. 20 years old when she went, so she had a good, long life.

Cotton is a bad idea too. It might feel soft on your skin, but is actually abrasive. Plus it'll tend to retain stuff that's potentially abrasive more than other materials (ie: sand, dried swat/salt water). Surgical sterile cotton is different because it's of a different grade. But most cotton that you'd get (diapers, rags, your t-shirt) would likely contain seed shell fragments and other contaminants at a microscopic level that could damage optics.

I use paper towels more than I should for cleaning eye glasses. If you get the ones with the glare reduction coating, they will scratch with paper towels. Paper towels are generally a bad idea. Obviously the brown stuff is terrible. My dad says Bounty microwavable (apparently it says that on the package) and Costco Best are the better choice if you have to. Brand name facial tissue is about the same level, obviously nothing with lotion.

Microfiber cloths are your best bet. I don't mean the towels/rags (can't speak towards them), I mean ones like you get with your sunglasses or from your optician. Honestly, there's really no excuse not to have and use them. While there's better quality ones for more money, you can get a 100 pack for $7-8 off eBay that are perfectly serviceable (they won't damage your lenses, but cheaper ones might not remove oil/grease as well).

The really good stuff is KimWipes. They're made for scientific kinda stuff. It's what the shop my dad works at uses. He's a master optician who makes stuff for all aspects of aerospace, telescopes, sight windows, lasers, etc. KimWipes is expensive stuff though. Definitely too pricey for buttwiping.

In the end (heh) it comes down to what you're wiping clean. If it's an old pair of Smiths or Bolles or something of the like, it might not matter to you much. If it's some Foster Grants or Walgreens reading glasses, who cares? If it's your new pair of Flexon framed CR-39 Transition lenses with blue light filter and AR coating, or your new Maui Jims or Randolph Aviators, then stay away from paper towels and resist the urge to use your t-shirt, and carry a microfiber cloth.
