Knives aside, what are your other hobbies??

Well, I didn't chime in the first or second time around, because, frankly I didn't have a hobby. But, earlier this year I bought a couple guitars to see if playing was something I wanted to pursue, and found out that it is. :) I'm mostly interested in classical guitar, but I do have a steelstring also, and like it too.

I'm not very good, but I'm having a lot of fun being not very good. :)

I'm also dabbling in guitar making, which I'm thinking may become a second business, if I'm any good at it.

You do have a positive attitude about seriously trying - that is cool!

From one with MANY very serious hobbies, I hope you do find the
one you really like and enjoy it for many years... :)

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Collecting knives, for most of us, is a passion. Some passionately collect things besides knives. For me, it's all in the art - what I see visually from the creation.

I still vividly remember spending most of my time as a child (from age 4) in my uncle's studio, watching him create abstract expressionist art. How he tolerated me I will never know!

At a very early age I began collecting. Now, in these later years, I admire it, study it and become absorbed into it - both the knives and the art. Here is a quick but representative sampling (not the knives) of the art. The images are pretty aweful, as I'm rather restricted to what I can and cannot post in an online setting. Five more images will follow in my next post. Hope you enjoy!

Are you allowed to photograph in a museum?? :)

Amazing art, Bob, I love the bold and dramatic colors!
Some seem to be the creations of one artist, a man or woman
who knows what he/she is doing too...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Bob, did you notice, we were just now together on 1144 posts
at the same time and for about one long minute.... :)

David, I am lucky to have outstanding natural lightning as it sure goes a long way in making art more visually focused.

Three of these were created by my uncle, the others by different artists, all of whom I knew, at least as a kid. Most are from the 40s and 50s.

Your comment about the "bold and dramatic colors" really hits home for me!

And no, I didn't notice that we were at the same posting number, that's kinda the same feeling one gets when noticing the odometer hit 100K or 100mi!!

Best,

Bob

For me its chess. I played a bit of tournament chess and a bit of club chess.

I love chess since you do not plug it in, it makes absolutely no noise at all, its social, and it can be played by someone with very little money. Even third-world little kids can join in and be a part of it. Its truly a world-wide door opener if you ask me. :)

i would gladly play it daily even if i lost every game for the rest of my life. Simply unrolling the board, and just handling the pieces at the end of a tough day makes the stress go away for me.

There is something good to be said about the tension you can feel playing a game against a good club player part way through a Grunfled with a 30 minute clock setting (not too fast, not too slow), and a new move comes up that you did not expect. Sweet. :)

The best place I have played so far: Harvard Square in Boston in the fall. I met a few people that day. :)

Other 'hobbies': hiking, trying hot sauces, trying good tequilas, eating 'street meat' in Toronto on Queen West, strolling on the Danforth and on Bloor in the Annex, trying to find a bottle of Sam Adams Triple Bock beer in Canada (LOL).

By the way, I had no idea Utah looked like that. Zion Canyon is incredible. Utah is now on my list of places to visit in the US. Wow!

I knit. Sounds odd, but it's useful, and productive, and I couldn't tell my three year old daughter no when she asked me to knit her a sweater like mommy was doing for my son. So mommy taught daddy, and I kept my hands busy.

....... Utah is now on my list of places to visit in the US. Wow!

Don't even think of skipping Monument Valley in the late afternoon.
I was there for hundreds of times with the western movies of
my younger days and actually visited with my wife for the first
time in 1986....

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Wow again.

For me Newfoundland is next. I will go on Tuesday to St. John's and the surrounding area. It should be pretty good. I can leave work and the GTA behind for a few days.

Home brewing, Aikido, Shoot pool in a league and my favorite hobby is fly fishing, but have not had much time on the water lately.

Well, I have a few hobbies that I have picked up through the years,
1st one is motorcycles, I learned to ride on an old BSA 500cc single and a Hercules in Germany. I am still very into motorcycles and I spent my last deployment savings on a bike before I ever even thought about trying to learn to make knives. I have raced with WERA and CCS (race organizations with my SV). This is my Aprilia, I still have the SV and plan on racing again, I have a used KTM 400SX which is my dirt bike.

2nd is firearms, this is part of the collection,

3rd is m pathetic attempts at forging knives (I need a lot of practice/work, my grinds are really terrible),

4th is photography which is probably my only hobby which doesn't entail fire, and destruction of some sort to include my own body, which is how I managed to get this shot in Iraq (I'm in Iraq now).

and the last money pit of mine, my very first vehicle a 1974 Ford Bronco,

So this is why I have been placed on spending restriction.

Quite a lot of action in your everyday life Stefan...
Keep up the knife making attempts. From what you have
done you show potential!

This is an amazing photograph!
Please describe what and where this is... It otherwise leaves
me with horrible visual associations...

Take care of yourself down there!

That was taken in Iraq about two months ago. The storage buildings I was shown had old stuff dating from the British occupation to the Iran and Iraq war as well as the war with Israel (even though that didn't last but a couple of days). This is just an old collection of helmets that was abandoned by the Iraqi army when we invaded.
Here is a link to my photos,

There is everything from British .303 enfields to BRNO Mausers, FN-Fal's, M2's, .30cal machineguns in this pile,

My combat knife (Jason Knight), I use it as much as I can and carry it everywhere with me (since we are talking about hobbies this fits in with my picture taking) I took it here in Iraq,

I have a '73, and to offer a correction, it's not a money pit, it's a "love affair."

Those are some really great photos

You can say that, but most my love affairs suck up all my money (you can see the list). That Bronco is currently sitting in a shop getting rebuilt while I am deployed. It was my first vehicle (truck or SUV, however you want to classify it) that "I" owned and bought with my money. Plus my son loves it so I can't get rid of it, I actualy told my wife before we married that I will "NOT" get rid of the Bronco!

If you get time post up a picture of your 73. My Bronco was/is a Bronco Sport but it got a bit screwed up when it was roled. I had to throw away most of the trim because it was damaged.

Thank you for the photo comment.
