Knives for running?

Fixed blade: Mora #1 or #2
Using the factory sheath, on the fannypack strap/belt, a shoelace through where the belt goes, as a neck knife (handle pointing up), or some Velcro to put it on your off side arm.

If you insist on a folder, an Opinel #7 or #8.
In your fannypack or in a passport holder.

I don't know of any knives that are lighter.
Either will let you make a splint and/or a walking stick or crutch

For critter defense, the Mora would probably be the better choice over a folding knife. (a can of bear spray would be even better)

I don't run. (I'm physically incapable of doing so.) I ride a bicycle, so feel free to ignore my suggestions. :)

If you are determined to carry a knife while running, I would suggest a butcher knife, held in the reverse grip used in a constant stabbing motion. It's the most fitting running knife, especially if you have the classic violin playing on your phone.

This made my evening:D:D:D.

If you want it for self defense, then you need a decent long stout blade. I would get a Spyderco Endura 4 (saber ground, since they are stouter than full flat grounds) and ghetto wave it with a zip tie. Or go the SALT route and get the equivalent from that line of knives, although they are a bit more expensive.

But I agree with others regarding a baton, gun or pepper spray as being more efective against animals than a knife.

Also a long-time distance trail runner. I have no new suggestions, but what I have carried include Delica 3 or 4 (3 is not available much, but has a better point), Salt (SE, will not rust), Dragonfly (not a fan of the small handle), CRKT Minimalist (surprisingly ergonomic, very light and easy to carry, and cheap), Spyderco Ark (H1, SE - very easy to carry, won't rust). Any of those are easy to have with you and will serve emergency cutting duties. If you want something for self-defense, then start with what you think the most likely threat is. Fixed blade is easier to deploy under stress, but do you want to carry and how?

Another fan of the Spyderco 2.9 oz Pacific Salt, good size blade with a plain or spyderedge, your choice. Not crazy expensive.

I think a neck knife would be my answer to this scenario and I generally don't like a knife around my neck except in a kayak (to prevent loss). I would carry the Blackjack 155 which I own. Other choice would be the Kabar Becker BK-14. Folder choice would be a good old reliable Vic SAK or a Spyderco Delica.

I always love threads like this because they definitely tell you who is and isn't actually a runner. It's worse with gun people- nothing quite like an OFWG telling you about good holsters for a Glock 19 while exercising outdoors. I mean... sure, if you mean leisurely strolling around the block with a walking stick. But if you're doing serious outdoor cardio work, the bulk and extra ounces are a noticeable factor. Anything more than a couple ounces is extremely noticeable, and how you carry it makes a huge difference in comfort when running.

I'm no ultra-marathoner, but I will trail run up to ten miles at a time. A small knife really was the best defensive option because it's physically the smallest package. A very small polymer .380 ACP would probably be my next choice.

I carry an Emerson La Griffe with the drawstring of my PT shorts threaded through one of the grommet holes in the kydex sheath and the sheath IWB in the small elastic pocket roughly the 2 o'clock position that IPFU shorts have. This is literally the only thing I carry when I run outside- I don't bring my phone, or water, or a belt or armband.

It's very comfortable, but I have rust issues with the knife. I am thinking a Spyderco ARK would be a good add for me, but the stock sheath is bulkier than the La Griffe's and the knife is a smidge larger. I also really like the ring grip and claw blade for the La Griffe.

I'd be leary of folders because I'd anticipate rust issues, but if you had a Salt H1 or something like that, it could clip on your shorts and be fine, I think. I might be concerned about rust on the liners and small parts, though. Really a Salt version of the waved Delica would be the best folder for running, I think.

I agree with the spyderco salt series suggestions. I carry those anytime I'm swimming or working out.

To those suggesting a gun, or some sort of pepper spray... it is important to note carrying both are illegal in Canada. There is bear spray available, however that is also illegal to carry for SD and depending on the location of the trail could get you in trouble. Also, this is just not for SD against humans or animals, but also general utility or something else that could happen during a run.

This is what I carry when exercise and sweat are going to happen. It started life as a Spyderco Salt

I carry a Delica 3, it's what I have.
I have not found a way to carry a fixed blade securely. IMO if needed it will be needed fast when you are sweaty, and have lost some fine motor skills so one hand opening and good handle is a must.

Bugout is pretty hard to beat for capability vs weight IMO. The Manix2 LW is awesome, but a lot more bulk despite the numbers.

Massdrop just released a new drop on the Gent, this time with carbon fiber or rosewood scales. It has a 3-inch blade and weighs 2.4 ounces. Its handle is small and doesn't necessarily lend it toward hard use, but it's a lot of blade for the size and is of high quality, especially for the price.

No substitute for a small sized pocket pistol on a belly band for running!

LOL at the timing. Ironic, perhaps?

Run with a bow in one hand and arrows in the other ,or a spear each hand .
