Knives you won't buy (and why)

Gerber. Been there, never again. I have no use for a dull knife shaped object. Any Cold Steel knife marketed as a weapon. Reason: They are marketed as a "weapon", hence to the legal system, they are a "weapon", thus illegal to carry in most jurisdictions without possessing a CCW permit, and even then, it can be iffy. ANY knife with a partially or fully serrated blade. Reason: I loathe serrated blades. If I want a saw, I'll buy a saw. (Also, a lot of jurisdictions consider any knife with a fully or partially serrated blade to be a "weapon".) Switchblade/Automatic. I have no need or desire to own one.
Butterfly knives. No need or desire to own one.

Cold steel doesn't use DLC. They use Teflon coating, and it is awful.

Apparently the Teflon coating was terrible. I didn t get a Cold Steel knife until the current offerings came with better steel and dlc black coatings. I still don t like black blades, but the dlc on my American Lawman wears very well. With the improved blade steel, CS knives are now a bargain.

Anything Spyderco. Cant stand the hole in the blade, some of the ugliest blades around I think.

Serrations, blades under 3", American tanto, frame locks without steel insert, tip down only clip, excessively thick blades on folders, finger choils on blades under 6", fixed blades in the 6"-9" range(few exceptions), handles with less than 4 finger grip(only exception being smaller slip joints), recurves

Medfords because reasons(obvious)

Strider folders because of the excessive finger/sharpening choils

Anything that has really late lockup out of the box. I know sometimes it's not a big deal but it bothers me.

blade serrations (with the ONLY exception being a full serrated Spyderco Salt)
excessive recurves
non functional and overly elaborate compound grinds
art knives (over embellishment that takes the purpose out of the tool)

When I started this thread I mentioned several features that would prevent me from buying a particular knife. Well, in the spirit of "never say never", today I broke one of my own rules. I said I won't buy a chisel grind knife but this morning I ordered an Emerson.

Maybe I'm not as set in my ways as I thought.

For me its simple... i wont buy anything i wont use.
If i want to pay to look at something i cant touch i'll go to the strip club.

My all-purpose everydaycarry folder cannot have an aluminum handle, a steel grade below 154cm, a blade length shorter than 3", an overall weight above 4 oz., a linerlock, and any kind of blade and hardware coating. There are exceptions but most of my knives do not exhibit any of these characteristics

I follow the same rule, with a specificity towards ergonomics.

It doesn't matter if the handles are made from rare meteorite from a distant unknown planet, and the blade from pure 100% platinum; if it doesn't fit my hands, it's gets put up for sale. Have had a ton of great knives go through my hands (ha) because they just seemed 'off' in standard cutting grips. Know it when you see it type of thing. Some were too slippery (stonewashed titanium or polished carbon fiber are the 2 main culprits). There are some makers that are geared more towards usability, while others tend to be on the more flashy side of the spectrum, with a lot in between - I just find myself towards one side of the spectrum than the other. I know I've hit proverbial gold when I can get both ends of the spectrum in the same knife.

Cold Steel

The owner has stolen "design cues" and other maker's trademarked and patented ideas for years. This is all very-well documented, on these forums and others. Integrity goes a long way..... isn't it so?

I just can't bring myself to buy a knife without a reversible pocket clip. I'm way too left handed and I hate it.

Falkniven copied their SRK and look how people worship them.
