LETS SEE THOSE MAGNIFICENT HARNESS JACKS

Here's a pic. Definitely intentional.

I have 5 of those Holyokes, and I just checked them. They all have half-stops.
It is very hard to fake the stamped blade. Maybe the spring was replaced when the tang wore down? The stamp looks passable from here . . . . .
or maybe it is original, just worn.
Do the springs and blades match when you view them ( blades open ) from the spine/backspring side?

The spring is flush when open on the punch, but the spring on the main sits low when open.

If the spring on the main is a replacement it is hard to have it sit flush in all three positions.
If it is original and the tang it worn, it should sit low in all three.
Sometimes you can tell by the color of the steel. Springs match?

Thanks for the comment on the Case, Ron! I'm quite proud of that old boy!

But wait, what's this?? Something from Queen in Titusville?

Look at that jigging. Like the Grand Canyon! :D

Could it be? Could it really be...?

YESSSSS!! It's Charlie's HJ #2. 1 of 75. I was lucky enough to pick this up when they were originally available from dealers. I was new to traditionals at the time and spent a lot of time pondering HJ1 vs. HJ2 vs. HJ3. I finally decided to go with #2 and I'm glad it did. I've loved and used this little guy well over the years. But now I wish I'd gone with #1 AND #2 AND #3 (AND #4, 5, 6 & 7). :D

I love everything about this HJ: from the color and depth of the bone, to how thin the blade steel is, to what a great slicer it is, to the functionality of the punch. The action, fit and finish are all superb!! Well done Charlie and Bill and Queen!

Robb....it looks as though we found another Golden Boned Beauty that is used-Christian now and then shows his magnificent HJ2 at times as well - sporting the same Patina'd look!!!

Up until the 2014 Rendezvous I sharpened and used all my knives. Then after meeting Charlie, handling a bunch of his TC Barlows and seeing and handling those wonderful knives for myself, I purchased one directly from him. I never could bring myself to use it so I put it on display on a shelf. I've acquired a few more of those wonderful Charlows and some other knives as well that I just can't bring myself to use and put on display. I think it marks a change but I have no overall goal yet and I'm not quite sure where it's headed. :)

Late to the thread, late to traditionals, late in general. New and trying to learn. So can someone indulge me and tell me what "HJ" means?

Well my late friend, HJ is the abbreviation for Harness Jack.
You have some reading to do grasshopper! :D

Dave

Welcome to Traditionals!!

Welcome Major works, you are right - these guys have some lovely knives!!!

Robb, I know EXACTLY how you feel my friend, at times when I can - and if stocks are available ( lol which is usually never ) I try to buy two - one to preserve and one to use - but even the "users" stay pretty darn tidy and get careful use. :o
