Lets see those shops! PICS

And here is the Bathroom/Laundry/Leather "studio"....

What can I say?... It's temporary.:p

You're going to have to be Really really careful about keeping the leather dye separate from the laundry, or that will create household harmony problems.

Is there a special purpose to having the vise mounted so far back on the table ?
-keeps all the drips on the table and not the floor ?

Here are the areas that I work in. I have spent the past 2 months moving things from the front garage back into my barn and working on tools and setup. I was fully in the garage, but making too much dust for the family and it was bothering me. I have since built a grinding room in the barn and a hot forging area back there. I'm sure I'll eventually move fully out there after I can insulate for winter.

Here is where I started. This is now a place with my small forge to work during the winter on small things. I still haven't moved the grinder belts back to my new grinding area.
(2-brick forge, 125lb trenton anvil, post vice, Bench drill press and metal bandsaw.)

Here is a workbench in the garage where I hand sand. It's still warm enough in the winter:

Now into the barn:
Here is the new insulated grinding room that I just finished building. I have more setup to do in here still:
(GIB 2x72 and 9" disk running off same VFD, each has 2HP baldor)

To the right of grinding room in the open barn area is my hot setup:
(250 lb Fisher Anvil, post vise, 98 lb block of 4140 on end and home made propane forge)

At the opening of the barn, I keep my portable setup for forging in the yard:
(Brake Drum forge, 105 lb. Hay Budden and Champion 400 blower)

Also in the barn is my HT oven (22.5" Evenheat):

I'm still new to this and collecting tools & supplies, but this is where I work.

I am curious about the 20lbs gas bottles you guys have inside Rick. Isn't there a problem with that as far as city regulations or inssurance goes?

Insurance... Ha!... good one, Patrice! :p

Darren,

One thing I can tell you, as someone who has been responsible for men setting up shop in the families garage; you have made your wife and children very happy. :D

Excellent on the big Fisher; a joy to forge on one that size. The different forging stations is handy. You can move about with the weather.

Moons got the "new" hammer set up and running so hes happy. I'm working on a second Scottish dirk, same guy. This one looking to make a little more traditional. A fun build.

Working on the invention, having fun there.

Nice work space, enjoy.

Fred

So I have seen this thread a few times and finally took some pictures. Maybe it will help someone who has a limited space with arranging items in the shop.

This is how it started out. 7' ceiling, carpet, was an office.

Then I tiled the floor built in benches and moved in. Here is my tool box, vices, hardness tester.

My granite work surface, sandpaper, sharpener, storage for metal, handle material, etc...

Here is my portaband with a custom welded stand. My GIB with a 2hp motor. I had a disc grider in the middle but needed to replace it.
p1030285g.jpg

My drill presses. None of which I am extremely happy with, my dust collector in the closet, I also have a air filtration unit mounted to the ceiling that I made an 8' height, and my work station for sheaths.

My kiln and quench oil are out in the garage. The room is 13' x 12'. Not much but it keeps me busy.

What size is the big wheel on your platten attachment? I've been wanting to make a new one for my grinder and that looks about perfect.

Mother to a dozen of knifes. I don't know if I love it or hate it. But as soon as possible I'm going to set up a shop.

I think that's awesome. I started with files and sandpaper too. Makes your really appreciate your grinder when you get it!!

I'm really enjoying this thread. Getting lots of ideas!

I recently expanded my shop. I love my shop - it's my favorite place to be.

nice, you guys are spoiled, starting to get mine back up and running, will post pics, I'd take those buffers off the table though, almost took a dagger through the belly with same setup, on a stand if it hooks up it just sticks in your foot!

Mounting a buffer backwards is a big mistake. Learn to use it properly, please.
You may think it's safer that way, but it isn't.

Thanks, Bill. I'm here to learn. I'll do a search and see if I can find some guidance. I usually buff on the top of the wheel so that when something catches it flies away from me. If anyone can direct me to a thread or tutorial, it would be much appreciated.

Always buff between 8-9:00 on the wheel. Hold items so that if the wheel grabs the blade, no fingers are in the way.
