A question for all the 74 folks here. I received an Elk handled version today and the Elk has a gloss to it and is shiny. I was expecting it to be more satin like the look of stag. Does anyone know if GEC puts a coating or such on the Elk handles? Will the shiny part rub off with pocket time? Anyone else notice this on their elk?
Thanks all, and take care,
Rick

That's a great looking orange bone Paul. Congrats!

Paul, that is gorgeous, and I think it will age beautifully! I can't wait to see pics as it ages.

Paul - Nice colors on that Orange Bone!

Oh my, Paul, that's a doozie! It looks like a fiery sunset. One of my favorites so far! :)

Thank you everyone, the Mustang is a terrific knife, I'm still a carbon blade fan but I am also very impressed with their stainless and the very sharp edge it takes:cool:

Have a great weekend everyone:thumbup:

I received my 74 in chestnut today. I was a bit concerned as the vendor didn't offer a choice in which knife to order, but the one I received is fabulous, excellent grain and matching. F&F really good, too.

Paul, you did a really great job of capturing the beauty of that 74.

Here's mine. I really like that wormy chestnut and I'm glad they went with a polished finish on these. Really adds to the sleek feel in hand.

*Just had to add.... When I think of a knife, this pattern is what I think of. Very basic, no special ergonomic frills. Kind of generic looking, but GEC really nailed it with the lined bolsters and outstanding cover materials. I feel like this is probably one of my favorite patterns they've produced so far. Would be awesome if they made a clip/pen jack IMHO. That would be THE knife for me!

Awful nice knives!! One moment I like the chestnut and the next elk...then the orange bone:D But I just keep hearing this song in my head

"S Wonderful"

Don't mind telling you, in my humble fash
That you thrill me through, with a tender pash,
When I saw you there, 'magine my emoshe
I swore then and there, permanent devoshe,
You made all other knives seem blah
Just you alone filled me with ahhhhhhhh......

's wonderful, 's marvellous
's awful nice, 's paradise,
's what I love to see.

's magnificque, 's what I seek
's elegant, 's what I want,
's what I love to see.

I thought that the shiny finish came from them polishing the antler, as opposed to putting any type of coating on it. I would think that pocket time would continue to "polish" it rather than lose the shine. I don't know for sure though.

I was lucky enough to get an EDC version, which came today. Thanks Barry! The only flaw is unphotographable, a small inconsistency in the Delrin on the mark side. But I'm thrilled to have this as an every day knife, so it's just fine with me.

Okay - my Orange Delrin Mustang made it in the mailbox today.
So, it's time to post a photo of the full set:

And, if you were wondering about the cosmetic blemishes / issues with the Delrin EDC knife:

The blade etch is fainter / lighter (and slightly 'splotchy') when compared to the rest of the Mustangs.
In addition, the finish on the blade's tang is far from what I would call polished. It looks like an artifact from the heat treatment (kind of like the Northwoods' "rustic" finish).

Mine came in today, and it shares those two exact blemishes. The action is also a touch rougher than my non-S Mustang, and there's a bit of a slope to the butt, where one side is radiused more than the other, but that's all I can find. The finish on the tang is the only thing that would surprise me in a non-S knife -- heck, one of my favorite knives is a custom with a butt that looks a lot like this one. ;)

This is my first store/parts/EDC GEC knife, and I'm impressed. I'd happily buy an S knife again. I'm also enjoying the HELLO I AM ORANGE color. :D

Late to the party but well worth the wait! I like everything about this one so much, I may have just received a new, number one all time favorite... and stainless to boot!!

I got an orange delrin as well. It's a great pattern and I love the color and steel. Better pattern than I anticipated. I don't have it with me but on mine I noticed the lines on the bolters really flair out at then ends as they get closer to the liner. You can see it in MrBitters' photo here:

Not sure if the other runs are like that. I just assumed these liners/bosters pieces were the blemished ones QC'd out, but not terrible enough to discard entirely.

bug holes, worm holes, nail holes? ...oh my!
Love 'em. Mine has a hole that goes right through to the liner and is filled with clear resin of some sort.
I was in a quandary about which scales to get -it was down to bone or wood by that stage due to their popularity.
So i had to pounce. Thanks to those who "bush telegraphed " me about availibilty. And thanks again Barry.:)

A bit late to the party, but I'm very pleased with my cover choice. I knew I wanted elk, but I couldn't decide if I wanted a nice smooth cover, or a more natural and wavy one. I got lucky and got a very natural looking shield-side, and a smooth pile-side.

The fit and finish was completely flawless albeit some blade crashing, which a few hours on the sharp maker solved.

Wow! The grain on those handles is about perfect. Just a beautiful knife.

Thanks Ratbert. I almost missed this one. When the 74's came out I was allowing my knife budget to cool somewhat from some previous purchases. Then a couple weeks later the budget had sufficiently recovered when this became available...Now I know I'm still in the honeymoon stage with it but, I think it might be the one. :o:D

meako, bug, worm, nail whatever, ya got a real beauty, holes and all!
BlockPsycho, smooth and wavy who could ask for more! I have a 77 with stag like that. I like it very much.

More pleased with this one than I'd expected. I wasn't sure about the jigging when I first saw it, but once I got it in hand I realized the grip feels great!:) With it being SS it's become my perfect carry for those hot & humid days too. (last time my peanut rode in my pocket on a squelcher, rust spots showed up)
