One more... When I was kid, my dad would take me to Cornwell & Kelty, an old school sporting goods department store to shop for Boy Scout equipment. They had a big glass case full of beautiful pocket knives, axes and fixed blade knives. Hanging up on the wall behind the counter was a plaque with a Western W49. It was an old fashioned Bowie knife. It had a 9 1/2 inch blade and was almost 15 inches long. It shined and looked like something out of the Wild West. I REALLY wanted it. But my dad told me I would have to wait until I was grown up, because it was a serious tool, not a toy. He gave me his Buck cadet as a consolation prize. A couple of years ago, I realized that I might finally be grown up, so I went to eBay and looked it up. I found one and bought it... and a few more knives too. And then more knives. And more...

Very interesting camp cookery item, Jack; I would like to hear more about it. Thinking of doing a thread....
Thanks Lee, the kettle is a new one, made by Eagle Products, if I remember correctly. Quite pricey, but it seems well-made. Thread is a nice idea

Found picture that's at least 10 years old of a San-Mai (VG10, not sure) Laredo with excellent fit and finish.
I believe they were made in Japan. I do remember they where quite pricy at the time.
I payed over €400 for it in biggest knife store in Amsterdam. But I was very impressed with the knife.

This was one I used to lust after as a kid visiting Mel Cotton's in San Jose in the '70s. That place was amazing. Anyone else here remember Mel Cotton's?
Haha! I bet they had the same display there as at my local sporting goods store. I still remember it... It was a big knotty pine wooden wall plaque with the WESTERN logo engraved into it. The Bowie sat across the middle of it shiny and new. I guess a lot of kids lusted after that!

This started off as a large square tipped cane machete or something that came in one of the Colombian machete assortments I bought, and I decided to reshape it.

It's still basically just a heavier machete, but now it looks more like a Bowie.

I have thought about maybe rehandling it to really be Bowie like but since the steel doesn't really sing on this one I'm not sure it's worth it.
