hey trailmaker! i was wondering about the 'stats' of your legitimus cruiser; what is the weigth, bit to bit length, and length of bits?
thanks
bear

I got 2 good axes M.Day weekend, so I shouldn't whine about this past weekend. All I got was 3 broken jackknives, a scythe blade, and a hunk of steel that may be a leaf-spring or a monster tire iron, but it all cost me only $6.50.
I'll make tomahawks out of the spring.
There's a little axe content at least.

Any pics of your haul? you have made me very jealous at what you have said so far.

Bearhunter, overall weight is 3lbs 5oz, overall length 27inches, bit to bit is 8 1/2 inches, straight line from top of bit to bottom of bit is 4 1/4.

thanks trailmaker! i have one headed this way, except the one i'm getting is 8" and it dosent look ground down or anything, matter o' fact it dosent look ground at all...
did they make one smaller than your typical 'crusier'?
how does she hit/swing?
thanks
bear :)

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few slightly different patterns of Legitimus Cruisers produced over the years. This axe isn't a "user" so I haven't tried it. Cruisers in general are pretty sweet though, post up some pics when yours arrives!

Nice finds! You guys are catching up, I have been asleep at the wheel. Better get back in action.

Very nice haul! Are you going to y and save any of those slipjoints?

A friend picked these 4 up for me a couple weeks ago in northern Minnesota. Kelly Works DB, Plumb DB (damaged heel), 2 Plumb SBs.

The Belknap is swinging on its rocker pin as I type. I have a Western clip-point blade blank that seems to fit. I have to grind that to shape and then buy some rod the right diameter for pivot pins. I was going to use the blade from the Remington for this, but it's a Remington, and from the look of the shrunken scales may be old enough to have been made by Remington (1940). I think I have a pen blade to replace that one. The H/S is pretty far gone, and would probably want muskrat blades that I don't have. I'll put it in a drawer for a while.

Are there any vintage makers that make 1.5# heads? I'd love one on a 19" handle.

This is a True Temper "Dynamic Hatchet". These were being produced as far back as the early forties. They also made a "Tomahawk" and "Tommy axe" that were similar in size. There are surely many many other makes of vintage axes in that weight category.

Heh, that reminds me I've got one somewhere.

Ljcsov, from what I've seen, there are a few hatchets that go into that weight, but (Kinda) more commonly you see half axes. 1 3/4 lbs, and a handle from 22'' to 26''. If I recall, a few boys axes are also 1 3/4 lbs lately, like the husqvarna.

Bearhunter, that unmarked hatchet looks like it might be an Estwing-the leather grip looks spitting image to a hammer I had years ago-was a damn good bit of gear too!

Not a garage sale but I fopund this one in an old shed on a property I bought.
Needed a new handle and some love but I cleaned it up and haven't used another axe since. Course,,, I didn't have that many to start with.
You can see where someone took a grinding wheel to it, but after allot of time with my Bahko file and some sandpaper she's good as new.

I even made a simple cover for it so I could take it camping.

This little Cruiser is about as close to perfect as it gets for my needs.

Here's a Collins Boy's Axe I got at a garage sale for $5. I'm currently bringing it back to life...
