Let's see your yard sale/flea market finds

Memphis, love the Kelly Perfect double. Looks to be in sweet condition.

Pipeman, maybe that Black prince was modified? Since the Temper and Prince parts of the stamps aren't there anymore.

I need to find a town-wide yard sale or something. The few I went today were complete duds.

you guys piss me off... :D

Today's haul:
File, raker gauge, swage tool, drawknife.

You can remake the handles for that drawknife fairly easily. Grab a couple file handles from the hardware store. Drill the handles with successively larger bits, each a little shallower than the previous. Make the hole a little smaller than the tang. Then heat the tang with a blowtorch, slide the handle on and burn it in. You get a nice tight fit. Let about 1/4"-5/16" of the tang poke thru the handle. Bang on a tight fitting washer and then peen down the tang to retain the washer. You're good as new.

Thanks, fellas. My neighbor has a small lathe, so I'm gonna try that to make new handles for that drawknife. It's a really nice one as far as I can tell. Has a slight bow to it. Nicely shaped bevels. Should clean up nicely.

I got the raker gauge and the tooth set tool for $7. Pretty decent, I'd say. Now I need to pick up a crosscut. I passed on one today that maybe I shoulda bought. Not sure.

Here's the marl on the DANKRE, as you can see it's a partial strike of the mark. I haven't been able to fund much on DANKRE but I believe they have been in business for many years. Judging by the low price of the new ones I would imagine that the quality has gone down since these two were made.

Regards

Robin

I guess so, they're now sold with red paint on them as I've seen on the web and they look less 'forged' (I don't know how to say this otherwise) as well.
Thanks for the picture!

Great hauls gents.

Memphis, you really struck a mighty tool horde!
I love some of those finds, the shape of that Vulcan DB caught my eye.

As for your 'Sweden' marked hatchet, I'd wager it's an old Wetterlings (70's??).
I was bidding on one on eBay the other week but it climbed a bit higher than I was willing to pay.
It was identical in shape though....only more orange!

How many keepers you got there then?

Picked this one up on the Fleabay. Gave it a good soak and it cleaned up pretty well.
Anybody know anything about this brand?

Here is todays find. It's an Italian switchblade, brass and bone construction. I really don't know anything about old switchblades but I have always wanted one so I couldn't pass it up.

I like that Zenith. I have a broad axe with the same logo. That red one is probably a newish True Temper, I've seen a lot that have the logo and the C15 or A45 or some other such combination. And a few like yours with no logo.

Hitting up some flea markets today - see what I can scrounge up. Guess I need a spoke shave now that Memphis has turned me on to them. Maybe and old anvil too. Old WW2 Bowie would be nice. Wouldn't mind finding an old broad axe, imprinted strickler or stohler. Nice old leather bag to carry my axes in would be a good find too. Would like to find a one man logging saw too. Hmmmm, any other wants ???? Lolololol. Happy hunting fellas, just stay out of my stomping grounds!!!

..... Would like to find a one man logging saw too.

If you have the choice take a 48" over a 36". There's a big difference in how easily they cut. The 48" has enough weight at the tip that you really don't need to bear down on it at all. Just move it back and forth and let the weight of the blade do the cutting. With a 36" you need an auxiliary handle to apply downward force on the blade. It's much more work.

Picked this (the orange axe in the foreground) up and a plumb hammer for $10. Garant axe from Canada I believe. At least it says that on the handle.

Got a HB double bit, about 10 inches across, $10, Plumb 4 lb DB, $10, and a kelly perfect double bit, $10.
