Lets talk GEC!

What is GEC production like these days? All my normal sites are Out Of Stock.

They make ‘em, they sell ‘em. None of them really stay in stock anymore (except the Remington #73, those are still available).

I’m kind of shocked about that, actually.

Is it because it says Remington and not GEC? Or because it’s priced a bit more than a usual GEC?

There was a lot of eager expectation, and then ….there they sit.

Not that I’m complaining, mind you. It’s kind of refreshing.

For me it was the price. Nice knife and I'd have bought one in a heartbeat for $109.

I'm not looking for "deal spotting" but, where do I find them for sale? I'm looking for a drop point slip joint of good quality. I also want something other than cheap stamped steel so, that is what brings me to GEC for 1095, though I'd prefer a stainless option from a modern stainless steel that is made in the USA like GEC.

Are BladeHQ and CollectorKnives good places to watch? Both have treated me well in the past and seem to be preferred GEC dealers.

To be honest your best bet is the ‘bay, if you just want to buy a good quality knife and skip the bull. Otherwise, get on dealers’ email lists and be prepared to act *instantly* when they send out notifications of new stock. They sell out within minutes, these days. Makes it kinda hard to shop for some specific model unless you are prepared to pay secondary market prices.

We aren’t really supposed to discuss the buying process here but I wanted to help a guy out with general advice. Apologies in advance to mods if I’m out of line.

GEC made 2600 of the Remington 2021 knife, and there are about 100 left for sale.

That is pretty impressive sales for such a large run.

When the 2021 knives are sold out at retail, expect prices to climb.

I have one arriving today I swapped four nice vintage English pen knives for it (actually 3 English I think one was German).

I don't have any Remingtons, the Tidioute version I have is an excellent knife, this is built just a bit better from what I have read which will make it outstanding.

Seeing the crazy prices of other GEC stuff I think its a good price, though I personally don't buy things for re sale I buy to use them.

I cant wait for it to arrive.

GEC's 440C is very good and performs pretty close to 154CM the way they treat and grind their blades. There were #73 trappers run in stainless from the early days as well as the #74 Mustang in 2015 or 2016 - both of those patterns had a drop point blade, just depends on whether or not you want two blades or one. You'll have to go huntin' for one on secondary markets but they can be found. PM me if you want more insight.

They have sold out in seconds in my latest experience

GEC has done 2 stainless patterns this year, which seems like one more than usual, so if we are lucky maybe more will come next year........

What's the difference between soup bone and marrow bone?
Inspired by a couple of antique second-cut knives that showed marrow, I asked Bill to make some similar handles out of his less-usable bone!! The first ones, we settled on calling inside-out bone, until Barry (GunstockJack) came up with the name Soupbone!!
I jumped on it for a name for my second-cut Barlows!!:p

Following that, I riffed on long used second-cut stag, by thinking up Third-cut Stag, and begged Bill to make some!! He finally relented!!

I'm proud to say Soupbone and Third-cut Stag came from Waynorth Cutlery!!

No doubt some of the best and most collectable knives ever made. I think I was able to get about 25% of what came out. The low numbers went fast. Thanks for posting the pictures.

Those third-cut stags honestly look really nice, Charlie. I’ve seen soup bone TC’s before, but I don’t know that I’d seen the third-cut stag. Thanks for sharing!
