Lets talk GEC!

I open my beer using an ancient polish technique handed down from generation to generation as a rite of passage to learn to open a beer with another beer so no beer scout necessary.

Although had I gotten on the GEC train earlier I would have totally picked up a beer scout as they look very convenient and would have put it to good use.

I still remember when the beer scout was announced and I made some disparaging post about it being a silly novelty. Duhh.

I certainly did for the Beer & Sausage knife and I haven’t changed my mind on that release.

The same for me. I can open a beer many ways including a string or a sheet of paper. I much more need a second blade than a cap lifter.

The problem with that technique is to open the last beer.

ive seen folks pop it off the table edge and the more daring folks use their teeth 😬

Some shots are up for the black micarta Sudbuster. I resolved to not bite on this one. But.. getting... weaker...

I love black linen micarta. I feel like these are going to be awesome! I'm generally a single blade kinda guy, as I've never need two blades at the same time on a knife, but I can get down with a lifter. BSs were my first GEC obsession!

We used to use table/counter edges back in college. Makes my teeth hurt just thinking about using them 😨

you're telling me! i have seen the video clips where people have chipped their teeth attempting it
German bottle opener of choice is their lighters (those plastic ones you buy from gas stations US, but not always BIC). Everyone I know in Germany smokes and they always have a lighter in their pockets.

Then again, I used to use Buck stockman to do the same. The soft bolster bites into the cap really well and the knife is large enough to give a good leverage to pop the cap. 😁

My current choice of cap lifter...

The 71s have always been my favourite user GECs. Very solid build, perfect back spring alignment in all 3 positions, nice pull, pinchable and very good value for money (more in the old days). Definitely better than the slightly cheaper / more expensive competition. The O1s appeared to be more rust resistant but they are all good.

I spent some time going through the GEC releases in their site, from their beginning to now, and it is impressive how many different models and variations they have produced.

I enjoyed the quirky acrylics they used to use in the past and the various fancy or plain woods.

Because they are a newer company you would have expected them to stick with a few popular models and just make those, but they did not.
You see a lot of imagination, fun factor, desire to be different in their models through the years.

I have several of their models from around 2007 to now and apart from the earlier bear-trap 23s they are all fine knives that are good value at their suggested selling price.

I also realised that somewhere, someone, has one of each model made - that must be a great collection.

I was close back in 2018 - was only missing a few patterns at that time - but have given up that pursuit.
