Lets talk GEC!

Always loved the Ben Hogan; never bought one. The spear-point with end caps from back around 2011 or so was my favorite.

Yes, that banner type shield on the Northfield looks very fitting on a long handle.

Been brooding about a Hogan, it looks a handsome knife- got my eye on a Barehead Tidioute version in Bloodwood, but I think it's just too big for my usual taste, still a very appealing knife though......

same here, perhaps if one showed up on the fs and its to my liking

I am waiting for a spear/lockback/swing guard version of the #65, which has not yet emerged. If it's that close to an old Sheffield folding dirk I will even shell out for stag :D

I like the spear versions too. This one in buffalo horn was one of the first GEC's I purchased. I'm used to carrying rather large knives so the 65 is a nice traditional option to me.

The #64 swing guards didn't seem like the biggest hit although the acrylics disappeared pretty quick. They look neat, but not the most practical. Here's mine in copper acrylic. I'd love a spear version!

I do love the symmetry of that swing guard. id like a version with out the lock back and the guard ideally. the top bolster sorta borrows from some coke bottle shapes.

I think that sounds like a sweet version!

I keep wishing for a 65 with a locking blade that has a secondary pen blade that doubles as the lock release. Since that probably won't happen, I'd settle for a 65 with a pen secondary.

That sounds like it would be a pretty serious feat of engineering. Has anything like that ever been made?

I have a Weidmannsheil Barehead stag knife like that. Spear master and Sheepfoot secondary which depresses as lock release.

Will P beat me to it, but yes.

I, naturally, can't think of any specifics at the moment, but I seem to remember AG Russell having a Jack knife in the catalog that worked like that.

ETA: I think it had an acorn shield, but I'm not positive.

Depressing the secondary to release the master blade has been around for over 100 years. I have old German folders with this locking mechanism.
Ken Erickson made a knife with this secondary release mechanism and did a "W.I.P." to show exactly how to build one.

Thanks, kj, I've been trying various searches to find examples of this blade locking mechanism but haven't been having any luck.

Thanks for the info! I'm going to look it up. I'm sure it's another one of those amazingly simple, yet complex, ideas. Kind of like Butch Vallotton's double action scale release auto knives.

On top of that, I think this is going to be a 'must have' knife for me. Any particular makers or brands to look for?

I can't get it out of my mind that I've seen a Puma with a lock release like that.

I just found a pic of a Hubertus switchblade where the pen blade is the release for the main blade. I would guess that the pen on that one would release the lock as well.

ETA: If GEC would do a auto like that I would do a freakin backflip. The 64/65 frame would make a sweet old style lever action switchblade.

The primary blade backspring just has an upside down "L" welded on that the secondary blade kick sits on. So if you force it down further it pushed the main backspring out and releases the lock notch. Was just cataloging this one the other day and checked it out...

If i come across my 100 yr old German folder with the secondary as lock release i will post pics here. I have too many unsorted knives to go through, would take me many hours, but i will keep a look out for it. When my collection got to over about 5,000 knives i could no longer keep them organized, which is a problem. Part of the fun of collecting is being able to find a specific knife when you want to, like now. What's the point of having a knife if i can't find it ?
