Lets talk GEC!

One of the best and most useful knives to come from GEC that I've had the pleasure to own. The pics are not deceiving, the sheepsmain really is that long! Thanks again fellow forumites, we done good. ;)

They went with crescent nicks this time. Funny, I like the etch, which doesn't usually happen!

Sorry guys, but I love that radio knife etch! Classic old school kinda look, sweet.
Rust red jigged bone, here I come...

That's a really beautiful knife Mike!!!!

Yeah! Wife said to order a Radio for my Christmas present. She gets to pick scales though. It will prob be rust red, unless I can talk her into the yellow, which I have a few others that I love. Am I correct in saying that they changed the caplifter design since the last one they made needed mods to get it to work right? Also, any clue as to the radio designation on this pattern?

The caplifter has been redesigned. Back in the 50's and 60's it was a fairly common hobby for boys to build radios from kits. I am only guessing that a knife like this would be quite handy for that pass time.

What a flashback :D I must have built 5 or 6 of those "crystal radio kits" when I was a kid,Not one ever worked :D

Thanks for the memories.

Best regards

My buddy and I used to build those kits. Ours worked. Mostly because Ralph was really good at it.

I think Ralph must have been one of the few grade school kids who built his own oscilloscope.

As I recall, I got some pretty decent stactic on a couple. :D

When the cheap little transistor radios from Japan hit the market, I was all through with the crystal kit radio. Amazing! Tiny little radios not much larger than a pack of cigarettes... and you could get two or three stations!

Seems like a long time ago. lol

I think GEC should've put a beer bottle etch on it and called it the 'workingman'. Seriously, the pattern looks like an EDC dream knife, but it'll have to get in rotation with his relatives.

Here's a shot of the old style cap lifter (now slightly modified):

Just completed my preorder for radio in ebony. I cannot wait. Although I think both bone options look amazing, I usually prefer the feel of wood.

I don't quite get where the "Radio" reference comes from. It's a very nice looking jack knife with a caplifter-flat blade screwdriver blade. Does drinking a lot of beer have something to do with radios?

I used to build electronic devices from kits when I was a youth (had a Ham radio "Novice" license) and I found that wire cutters, a soldering iron, and several small regular screwdrivers, flat and Phillips, would be more useful than a single size flat-blade screwdriver with the limited reach you'd get from the one on a pocket knife.

Though it's true that in those days Cokes did come in bottles with caps, we had a bottle opener nailed to the wall right next to the fridge. :)

Can you VM me a link to where you did that? I'd like to bookmark the page just in case!
