If I am not mistaken, that one looks like a recover. The factory 88’s have 4 pins.Didn't know that 88 came in ebony and and topped off with that great shield
Yes, it is the little elongated pits in the wood that show that it is cocobolo. My cocobolo Beer Scout has turned so dark that it looks black even when sunlight is hitting it.View attachment 3030340the color looks ebony but the grain looks cocobolo, but I don't have a vast selection of ebony or African blackwood so not sure but I have found cocobolo has the nice pitting in the grain (I'm sure there is another name for it)not that I don't appreciate smooth ebony such as this one.

I totally get this sentiment and agree they are much harder to come by these days. But…you’re looking in the wrong placesGEC makes a great knife but I am a little burnt out on them. They Nice knives with some of the best fit/finish out there and I had high hopes for them. Early on you could usually go to their distributers and be able to pick your knife out of their available stock and at reasonable prices. Now they make a release and their gone almost before you can blink with the latest knives showing up on the secondary market at inflated prices almost immediately. I guess this is a tribute to their popularity but it has pushed knife lovers like me out of the GEC market. At this point in my life I decline to play the subscription game, partake in a lottery or sign up for reserves. I love and use my two esquires and my Pemberton and I have three 15 Huckleberry's put away for my Grandsons; I sold my others and now it's pretty much a look at what's new but not buying.
This has to be a recover, right?? I’ve been on the hunt to collect these, and haven’t seen any other ebony covers.Didn't know that 88 came in ebony and and topped off with that great shield
I do like the knives but the carving is amazing. The person who carved it is an artist, to say the least.Though both these GEC pocketknives are dark Cocobolo, the Ebony carving from Africa does show its colour variation...

Yipes!!! Stripes!!! Macassar Ebony from the first run of TC Barlows!!!
I have a 78 coco that has also really darkened, I wonder if the blonde/brown streaks on the Macassar ebony darkens and almost becomes one color,my coco darkened alot in an afternoon while using it in the yard and then leaving on deck exposed to a hot sun when not using.View attachment 3030991View attachment 3030992

- saddest of all perhaps, is the darkening of Desert Ironwood. Have had some that started off looking like gold was engrained in the handle………….not so pretty nowThat Macassar knife is 13 years old, and I don't notice any darkening!! I've seen Cocobola darken a lot!!
Bloodwood as well.- saddest of all perhaps, is the darkening of Desert Ironwood. Have had some that started off looking like gold was engrained in the handle………….not so pretty now![]()
Paul that carving is amazing. Here’s one of my favorite macassar ebony handlesThough both these GEC pocketknives are dark Cocobolo, the Ebony carving from Africa does show its colour variation...
