Lets talk GEC!

I've been delighted by my recent GECs. A Beer Scout back in July, a wonderful Stag 83 LB last month and the most recent arrival last week a Northfield 77. All completely satisfy me and I actually look forward to using them. However, I still yearn for more stainless opportunities. If I could get a stainless 83 LB with stainless or NS liners (no brass..) I really think I would be at some kind of knife zenith, permanently :D The drop-point is such an excellent blade in that it lies low in the frame and has a completely straight back when shut , kind of streamlined.

Nice knives and some impressive stag on that #83, Will. Your idea of stainless all steel sounds good to me. ...and an acorn, bomb, crest, federal, or bowtie shield.... please. The hotdog or cloud shields were already tiresome a couple years ago.

thanks. i love the top bolster on the babylon hill special more than i do on the regular ben hogan, which has more of a copperhead appearance. do you notice if this affects your grip on the knife. do you choke up on your grip to a point where it is a concern?

The bolster on the Hogan is never intrusive in use, when choking up I actually find the bolster reassuring as it keeps your grip from sliding forward. I have and use the Mako, Babylons (plain & swing guard) and Hogan. My favorite to use is the Hogan but the coolest is the swing guard Babylon :D

theres someone selling makos in the FS and with the price drop its pretty sweet, but reviews are saying its a little uncomfortable in the hand. i was going to buy it and then round out the bolsters but then reconsidered. does the mako pattern feel uncomfortable to you after some gripping?

I just got 2 83s and KSF had to go through 6 to find two that had zero blade play. Batting .333 is not good. After I ordered those knives, I checked all my GECs I currently own. No play. Whew!! Scary stuff right there. Then I checked the 30 Case knives I own. Whew. No play there, on any blade. I think I'll stay away from BF GECs offered for sale. Just a precaution. Blade play is not accetable to me.

I'm new to GEC but already have 5. I appreciate carbon steel and understand the appeal to a degree, but I will echo others' desires for more stainless options. All stainless or stainless with brass liners would be fine with me. I'd rather not have to deal with sanding rust off liners and back springs or worrying that the knife is totally dry after use. I like sharpening and using knives, not fussing over them to prevent their deterioration. I'm amazed by the GECs I have (fantastic quality, plus beautiful materials and patterns) but am probably done buying high carbon knives, unless something really speaks to me in the future.

I love the 15 size and frame for when I don't want a big knife, but sheepsfoot only isn't for me.

I have one with a clip point that I like a lot.

yeah, love the clip version. still hunting for the bladeforums 2014 knife. i got my 15 clip and pen blade at Glenn's atm, waiting for him to remove the pen blade. my other 15s are the spear points. actually have 3 sheeps foots, 2 just sheeps and 1 with a pen. well and then beerscout, but thatll stay in the collection. just went on a spree the other month and now i realized wow im really not that into em as much as i thought.

I really dug the sheeps foot when I first saw it too. I wanted to try/collect a GEC with each blade shape (although no drop point yet, if ever) so over the past couple months ended up with a 77 wharncliffe barlow, 77 spear/coping barlow, 15 Beer Scout, 15 spey TC barlow, and a 15 clip cap lifter. The Beer Scout is a really fun knife pattern, but I think I'd prefer it with a wharncliffe or clip blade. I have discovered that those are far and away my two favorite blade shapes. All those knives are certainly keepers, though.

Jake Thank you, I am keen on that stag must say. :D I'm in agreement with you about the shield variety, Bowtie would be fantastic (should've been on this year's Forum Knife but many disagreed..). Tidioute has used a Corset style which looks good and a strange but very effective Gimp type shield on the 66 Slim in Acrylic, like to see those on woods say.

Many seem to ask after stainless but I have a theory that the owners of GEC don't much fancy stainless and prefer to work in carbon steel. Kind of a pity as their 440c is some very nice pocket-knife steel, ideal for acidic foods where carbon imparts flavour (yes, even with heavy patina) and the interior of a carbon knife is always a bit of a concern. It's OK if you use that one knife day in day out and no others, but the reality is.... I'm not keen on having too much oil inside a knife either, messy.

Here's one I like, a 68 White Owl from the Cyclop's Works, Light Tan Bone, stainless.

yeah, ive been looking for the bigger versions of the 15s, its apparently the 77s and 78s, but i dont like any of the stuff out at them moment. still checking the for sale every day for the 2014 bladeforums knife which seems to be what i want atm in a traditional. shame i wasnt on as much in 2014.

I am not a fan of the sheepsfoot blade either, its good for opening packages but not a good all rounder. Surprisingly a high proportion of GEC knives seem to come with a sheepsfoot, including the latest run of 25's.

Talking of Congress, I'll take up the refrain of let's hope they re-issue the 13 frame as a general run, either as a Jack or a single-spring Congress, jigged bone and some adventurous shield. Certain it would go down well and they have all the parts ready.

yeah, dont get me wrong, its got its purposes, but as i take them out to fondle, i realized it goes against the aesthetics i enjoy in a knife. love the other 15s i got tho. now to move on to the bigger version of the 15s boys knife, the men's knife :D

It sounds as though you only collect them anyways instead of using. So if that's the case, it doesn't hurt to have a variety of all the blade shapes. If you were using them, I can understand sticking to one or two blade shapes that work for you.
I use all my knives, so my suggestion is use them as they were meant to be and you might be surprised at how much you like a particular blade shape you never considered in the past. I have found uses for almost all blade shapes, so I let that dictate what I carry on a daily basis.

no, i do have a box of users, in fact, when Glenns done modding that 15 i sent him, that will be a user. that 15 clip came used, and has a patina. Cant wait to put that in my pocket. also i managed to get a 2014 BF knife from a user, well paid for it, its not here physically, yet. that one was a user so it will be likely in the user box as well, unless i really polish off the patina and store it. but then the BF member said he doesnt have the tube/paper. So im still on the hunt for one that is mint for my collection. Actually was gonna consider buying someones nit 77 clip and having the blade swapped but then the 2014 blade is unique and stag is so touchy... also love stag, the ben hogan came in boy is that pretty. pinched bolsters, wish they were regular but ill live with it.

in my ideal world, id have two of every knife id really want. one to store and one to use. i have a hard time using a new knife, its a condition ive suffered from ever since i started collecting as a kid. thats why my collection has a few repeats for certain things. another recent obsession was copperlocks, i almost bought yours actually, in the autumn bone? i have the blues in variation, the mini and the full copperlock. but cant bring myself to put it in my pocket. want to buy a used one just so i can carry it.

All ive sorted my gecs from new/used. a few i bought from BF members claim to be new so i keep it with the news. they really just get fondled and put back in the wax paper and back in the tube. boy if i can find a used big clip 48 for a decent price id be happy to put that in my scrubs pocket. (ahem 2dead cough cough sell me one :p, any one seen him about? hes been mia)

the only knife i never had an issue with using was my opinel. i bought two 9s when i was like 16. one stayed oiled, and the other is a round the house user.

i just find the clip blade so versatile, that it is my favorite blade shape. im sure itll lack in some areas, but overall i have quite the obsession with clip blades. Ordered the colt branded 17 inch bowie clip just for fun too, it brings a smile to my face every time i take it out. i think i dragged up a dead thread about clip blades the other week cause im still learning on what they are called. also made a comment here asking if someones got all of GECs clip blades so I can see them in comparison. The users in my cigar sort box includes 5 clips, the sak pocket pal, and a very old remington that has a clip and sheepsfoot. they are out of the picture because that thread was about single bladed slips. I do intend to get other gecs with clip blade in the future.
