Lets talk GEC!

Bob, is the Medium Barlow also made with the 77 frame ?
In your comparison picture, the liners and the handle slabs both look thicker on the Barlow than on the 77. I think the Barlow is purposely built to be as strong as possible.

Yes Roland. They're both built on the 77 frame. The covers may be slightly thicker, but much of the added thickness is in the liners. The cover thickness is marginal.

I think they are simply giving the people what they want.

It's been a great year for SFO's but the regular line seemed bland for covers to prior years offerings.. maybe it's just me.

I think people that are buying GEC want elk, mammoth, other natural covers they offered in the regular line in the past and are willing to pay for it. I'm sure GEC makes more money if people are satisfied with stag, wood, bone, and there's nothing wrong with that. Look at the Northwood Michigan offering... there was all sorts of covers: Mammoth, Denim, blue, orange, green bone. I guess all I'm saying is it would be nice if GEC offered something fresh in their regular line up for 2016 instead of waiting for SFO's. I'm not saying get rid of what they have because there's nothing wrong with what's available except it seems a bit limited compared to the past. Where's the rams horn, and feathered white buffalo, man I wish I could get a 77 with rams horn or red stag!

Well, this is my small collection of GEC's so far. Got the first one at the end of September. Can't say enough about the quality, fit and finish, or their service. Definitely going to keep growing the collection from here.

If I had to name a favorite of these, it'd probably be the #15 Farm Boy (which, looking at the picture, is probably the most basic knife of all of them, but I think that's part of what I like about it).

Evening gents. I picked up this older GEC recently. Don't know much about it but she's a pretty one! :D

73 pattern,The "J" stands for Jack, the "FB" stands for Flat Bolsters. Made in 2009.

According to GEC Production Totals, only 29 pieces of the 734209JFB were actually produced. Very nice score Dan!

Thank you guys for the info and compliments!

KJ- I oddly enough picked it up form the Kootenay exchange store on Baker st today. You might have guessed I was a little excited to find it there.

Dan, i have never found a decent knife anywhere around here in over 40 years of looking, so Yes, it's a huge surprise to find a GEC in a second hand store here. Great score. I'm going looking there tomorrow !

Yes, weird, I'm quoting myself :). I think GEC read my post.. please make more like this! Oily Creek Bone 773115. My Washington Jack is in the picture for comparison since most everyone is familiar with Smooth Autumn Gold bone.

I agree with your initial post that GEC's handle cover offerings are pretty boring as of late. How many times are we going to see 'autumn gold', 'antique yellow', 'chestnut' (all almost the same)... Don't get me wrong, I love these, but they do get old. I'd love to see some more Pond Bone, Crushed Perylic, Snakewood (an immediate selling favorite that hasn't been seen in 2 years), even Primitive Bone had flown by the wayside. Maybe they've got a system of what sells.... kind of like the #15 and the Farm and Field knives. Anymore, I loosely keep up on GEC, but their more recent offerings don't interest me much.

I have to say though, the smooth autumn gold on this last run of Washington Jacks is stellar. My favorite for the year.

Regarding Primitive Bone, I don't think they have very much, if any, left.
