Lets talk GEC!

:D I knew I could count count on Jake and Tim. Appreciate it gentlemen.

Though I like how both of you seem to have tempted me more than I already was. ;)

Mike, I have a question about the cover description for the "smooth autumn bone" covers. In the past this is usually listed as smooth autumn gold bone. I'm guessing the full description didn't fit in the allowed space, or you just left out "gold" because everyone knows what it is? On the other hand maybe you decided to drop the "gold" and this is not the routine smooth autumn gold bone?

I requested the same bone as was on the 2Blade #77 Barlows a couple months ago. Nobody does it better than GEC; but it is not an exact science. Didn't have room on the line for the full desc.

If it turns out darker like it did with this last run of 77's it's going to look soooooo nice on the 85's!!

These 85s are proving hard to resist. Can you guys do me a favor and reserve them all before my will breaks. :D I need to see some !!! on each one.

My Wife told me to help you out Brett , so I took her up on the suggestion for the Smooth Autumn Gold Bone

Harry

Harry, I think we both need to thank her. :D Those smooth autumns are going to classic.

How is GEC's warranty? I just got my third 2014 bladeforums knife, and that thing came messed up. spring is pitted on the inside, there is rust from the seller's attempted patina...

Never used their warranty, but I'm doubtful rust is covered, especially from a forced patina.

You could probably clean it up still. I bought some rust remover that worked great.

Is it really that bad?

I just noticed that they have changed the steel on the farm & field knives from O1 to 1095.

Does anybody know why they changed it, or why they used O1 in the first place?

have spent the last 2 hours with 3 in 1 and flitz metal polish doing the best i can, flushing the knife out. will need to get some rust remover. now theres pitting on the blade

Here is GEC's written warranty, copied from their website. I would consider rust to be normal wear with 1095 steel. Sometimes it rusts just looking at it the wrong way. If you're that unhappy with your purchase, return it to the seller. GEC has outstanding warranty service and they do go above and beyond, but I doubt they will do anything about rust and/or patina since it's considered normal wear.

Hope you get your knife up to snuff!

Thats the thing, the seller is so far away that i paid in november and it just got here yesterday. hes also in one of those countries with very high humidity, and then theres the awful forced patina attempt. the pictures looked ok.

I dont think gec can cover this or would. im sure the knife was fine when it left the plant. all my other 2014s are perfect, even the used one. this might be my edc 2014 i guess.

Even thinking that a forced patina and other wear and tear would be covered under warranty would be like you spray painting your car and then driving it daily for a few months and then expecting the dealership to re-paint it and do the body work for free. Doesn't make sense. I know you're buying these knives to get the mint ones, so stop buying the used ones. Use this one and enjoy it!

Flitz and polish will just give you a polish and take out the very fine scratches. Get yourself some high grit sand paper to remove the small pits and pepper spots. It works much faster.

If you have a problem with a seller, you should post in Good, Bad, and Ugly. If you need help with cleaning up rust, that should go into the Maintenance, Tinkering, and Embellishing forum. This thread is more enjoyable for everyone if it is used for discussing GEC knives in general and not individual purchasing experiences from a 3rd party non-vendor.
