Lets talk GEC!

Anyone out there notice that the 55 hardly ever comes up on the secondary market.....HMMMMM
I think GEC would be wise to do another run of them.

I just received this 73. It is not listed in the 2008 production totals, even though over 500 were produced. Does anyone have any idea what this smooth bone colour is named? As well, is this the correct tube for the knife? Later SFO's, especially club knives, usually have a different label. The lid with the #133 is correct for the knife, but the tube itself could have been mixed up at some time. It is a nice addition to my small collection of 73's.

Sorry, Wolfe, can't help with the questions you posed. I do have to say that I find the color quite attractive all the same, almost an Appaloosa. It appears doubtful the shield is pinned? If not, this may be the first from GEC that wasn't.

Wolfe, I did a Google image search for "2008 NKCA knife" and it appears that the tube is correct and the covers are called "smooth red appaloosa bone".

Wolfe, the smooth red bone covers on that 73 are perfect. Congrats on the pick up! I am super jealous.

Jamie, you are correct, the shield is not pinned. That is unusual for GEC. It is possible that the shields were provided by NKCA since they use the same shield on all their annual knives by different manufacturers.

Thank you for doing the search Jake. I should have thought of that myself. I am just a little thick when it comes to computer stuff. It is nice to know the correct name for the covers. Having the correct tube is always a bonus as well.

Shawn, for some strange reason I am always attracted to red handles. It's strange, since I have never considered using it on any of the knives I make. I am an absolute sucker for the GEC blood red jig bone, I can't resist them in any pattern.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Sowbelly.

No worries. I usually say a source if it isn't me. That way people know where to look and can evaluate whether or not it's reliable. I know how you feel about computers. It seems like all of my software is outdated and they want a monthly or yearly subscription for new software.

I'm up for a sowbelly pattern for GEC!

I'm looking forward to seeing how GEC makes a sowbelly. I'm hoping for a very traditional design. Some of their stock knives have been very traditional (Abilene) but others have been somewhat different (Dixie, Calf Roper)... and sometimes very unusual (Maverick).

The Calf Roper is one of my most used knives. But it's so close to the 68 the Buckaroo. Just a very slight curve to it. The Abilene is excellent and it's getting used but I haven't had it as long.

Somewhere in this topic, I posted detailed photos of old sowbelly knives with the hope that Bill would see them and follow the old design. :)

Here are a few images that should be helpful for designing a sowbelly....

Im all for another run of The Courthouse Whittler :D

I'm too since my ebony one slipped out of my pocket. I was very upset because it was a favourite and my dedicated whittler.
It was then the first time I realised that GEC wasn't for me(even before the Barlow frenzy) , because I couldn't replace the knife. It's true that after that one came the conductor the gepetto and the grinling whittlers, but the congress shape is very comfortable on the grips most used for carving.

I've got it so bad for Congress frame knives right now. I've got one in my pocket, one on my desk and another in the mail. I'd be all over a new run of congress whittlers even if they were 1095 but you know what'd really be neat? A new run of half congresses in 440C. :p

Yeah im just looking to get my first whittler period. I really love the look of the pattern especially the split back ones they seem to be a very handy kinfe indeed. Speaking of that can anybody tell me if the Courthouse Whittier is a split back?? I was just assuming it was witch I know can be a mistake. :D

The tube is correct. The 2008 knives were GEC branded "Cyclops" knives in 440C. Great knife!

I have had a couple of the 2007 NKCA youth knives which were 73 single blade drop points in carbon steel and 1 of them is one of my go-to knives for daily use. That red is nice and deep and it seems to be very consistent on this run. They generally fetch a good chunk of change too.

And yes, the shield is glued. NKCA provides the shields so they are unchanged no matter who the maker is. It's the only sore point on the knife in my opinion because I don't care for the shield personally. But it's never stopped me from using the knife! And I can say that a few years of hard use and the shield has shown no sign of moving or coming loose...

3rd from the right here is another shot of the NKCA knife with some other ivory bone brothers...

Forgot to add, they called it "smooth cherry bone" if I remember right. You may be able to find more information about it searching for that and leaving out the appaloosa nomenclature

Yes it was!! ;)

from what ive read the original rotten banana bone was the product of a big mishap in the factory. Something unknowingly had dripped or had been placed on the yellow bone and not discovered until 'too late'.

Mistakes are hard to replicate.

jrawk, Heard the same thing! So if it is difficult to replicate RBB, then why is GEC selling the knife cover as Rotten Banana Bone? Have you seen todays picture on their website? The Rotten Banana Bone has no rotten, or very little rotten! lol......compare todays RBB pic on GEC's website with the picture from the last run, or should I say "mistake" of RBB. No comparison! Am I being too harsh on GEC? Can I not expect rotten when I am told and sold rotten? Oh woe is me, what shall I do with a non-rotten banana bone knife? I know, let's name it "Somewhat Rotten Banana Bone, or better yet, how about Use Your Imagination Rotten Banana Bone! hahaha, ya just have to laugh.

I too have a RBB on order and was resigned to the fact that I was getting a canary and not a RBB, but I just ran the cover photo from GEC's website through a photo editing program and I think we may be pleasantly surprised. If not we get a fresh banana knife. A one of a kind. lol

Alan

Haha, you got me there.

Here's an original pic and honestly one of the few floating around. This isn't my knife so I couldn't say how the other side looks, or what the rest of the run was like. This one knife could be the extreme example. It's hard because most folks myself included are only using this knife for comparison.

This is what Rotten Banana Bone should look like! Not that mostly yellow, light brown mess that is pictured on GEC's website. And pleeeese don't tell me about bone density, ink dyeing, blah blah blah. When something is advertised and sold to you as a specific product, in this case Rotten Banana Bone, and you have precedent on what the product should look like, then by golly, do it right. And if you don't or can't, then be upfront with your customers and tell them that you messed up and give the customer a heads up before you ship out the product so that the customer has the option to not purchase the product, thus doing away with the hassles of returning the knife! Whew, okay I got that off my chest, now for a light splash in the warm Hawaiian waters of Ala Moana Beach Park.

Okay Alan, I'll use my new one of a kind Banana Bone knife to cut my tropical pineapples, lychee and mangoes! hahaha, just messin with ya all.

We're getting RBB that was plantain. There's always variation in the covers. It's a production knife.
