Lets talk GEC!

Will they be released through the usual channels of dealers?

Not sure, but I already sent Chris at GEC an email to ask that exact question. We'll see. (I feel a little bad, because I'm guessing I'm not the only person to have emailed her about this, but hey, what can you expect when you surprise everyone like this.)

I think Ramrodmb is correct; the normal Beer Barrel Oak run came from the outside of the staves, and the Charred Barrel Oak comes from the inside.

Ah man! I love it! I make my own whiskey and age it in smaller versions of those big barrels. Im definitely hunting down one of these!

You would have to be able to smell the char on these knives to. Absolutely unique.

I wonder if the stabilizing process would seal in the smells...? Agreed, very unique!

Do we know they are stabilized? Oak is pretty hard, and I'm pretty sure my Rosewood and the Barn Chestnuts arent stabilized .

The blurb on GEC's website says they sent off the slabs to be stabilized. Which is why I was wondering if only these knives came from the barrel.

It seems a little dishonest to come out with a surprise "charred" beer barrel Oak, after many have already purchased the beer barrel oak, hoping to get a charred one. I have already ordered the oak, but had I known about the "surprise" charred one, would definitely have ordered that one.

Now I won't be ordering the "charred" oak. I'm not paying another $100 for another knife. GEC manufactures a great knife, but I wonder sometimes if anyone in Titusville knows anything about good customer service.

Just a theory, but they may not have intended to make "charred" oak. It may just be that some of the wood took the stain more deeply. Kinda like the original "rotten banana" bone, just happy accident.

They came out darker than I was expecting.

I wouldn't necessarily disagree with Relee1. I can see where it would be a bit irksome to have known in advance what (you thought) all the available options were, and ordered accordingly, only to have this one announced after you've paid for whatever you chose from the four that were on the production schedule. I would definitely have chosen this Charred Barrel Oak instead of one of the others had I known about it beforehand. Personally, that's not going to stop me from buying one, because I do think it's awesome, but still...

I don't think, from reading the info on GEC's website, that it was an accident. I think this was an intentional move. But... I also don't think that anyone at GEC did it with bad intentions, or that they were trying to mislead anyone. They probably just thought it would be nice to surprise everyone with an unexpected knife. Just my opinion.

That looks awesome! But I'm curious where the picture is from? I looked in all the usual places on GEC's website and didn't see any finished knives.

Charlie posted this in the Barlow forum.

these look great. I like the backstory and the extra effort that was put into the emblems made from barrel bands. This would definitely be a unique one to add to the collection.

The New Run of TC Barlows look amazing. And from what Charlie posted on the Barlow Thread about "A TC for everyone" I think this is going to be a bigger Run then usual. :D

I like the darker look of the charred oak. I just hope it is solid. If it just stained from the char it should be fine, but if it has actually been burned or charred it will not be stable.

1 of 225. Man, that's not very limited, especially considering that GEC has run a lot of knives in groups of 25 or less. Neat handle material though. Sure to be a big hit!

A few pages ago, I mentioned that I was going to EDC one of the new GEC large leather pouch sheaths with a 98 cattle knife.

Structurally, the sheath has held up well, better than I expected, actually, so no problems to report there. To cut to the chase, one day I got out of the pickup to open a gate after a little impromptu squirrel hunt and when I went to check for my 98, I found an empty sheath. What a sickening feeling, right? Imagine my relief, then when I found the knife immediately on the truck's front seat! Whew!

Anyway, that brought that experiment to an abrupt end, as I intend to fashion some sort of fastener to the sheath before using it again. It really made carrying the cattle knife more pleasant, that's for sure.

More on topic, I had been pairing the 98 with a soda scout from CK's run last year, and that had been going great. I put that one up recently and have been cycling thru carrying all 4 variants of the new 15 crown lifters that just came out. What I have been discovering is the crown lifter on it's own (or often paired w a Sebenza :o) makes a generally great EDC out here in the sticks.

The collector in me feels conflicted, but I think I like that these larger runs make knives like the beer scout much more available to those who want one.
