Lets talk GEC!

Thanks Rick. Contrary to popular folk lore here on the porch, that is actually not me in my avatar. :D
It does bear a resemblance though and now it has become so associated with me, I cannot change it. Nor do I want to. That cheeky little toddler brings a smile to people's faces and that is what I like to do. :D

It does indeed bring a smile to my face, and thank you for that. Also thanks for clearing up my curiosity.
Merry Christmas to all,
Rick

Old Engineer, that is a very nice collection! Question for you (or anyone else)...are the 72 & 73 models prone to blade play and wobble? I have seen some nice 2 blade 73s and hesitated to pick one up due to this concern. Any thoughts?

I have used one of my 73's quite a lot , but you have to understand that my usage is not a rough duty at all. Plus I usually have a 77 Barlow in the other pocket .
But in a year and a half , there has been ZERO blade play develop in the 73.
I really have not used any of my 72's or my 74 , so I can not speak to them .

Harry

Love the clean and square joint on the 73, you don't see those often made. I have no use for one but I like to admire from afar [emoji4]

The only Clean & Square joints that I have , or have seen , are on my 73's and my Taylor's Eye Witness barlows . I am sure there are others , but I have no idea whose they would be . You for sure can not use a 73 pivot end as Tube Popper Tool .

Harry

I apologize if this question is off limits (or just rude), but does anyone know what the approximate final cost will be for the DLT 74? Is that info shared? I'm basically a reservation newb here. Thanks!

Probably best to ask them. They're usually pretty quick to answer. I'll leave you a visitor message with an educated guess.

As for blade play on GEC knives..... side play is very rare and I have yet to see it develop on my users. I don't generally abuse them though. On the lockbacks it's pretty much expected that they will have a little horizontal wiggle. Of the 5 or 6 I have, only one is completely tight. That includes some newer models too. That stuff doesn't bother me much though. It's not like they're rattle traps.... more like you really only notice it if you wiggle it with both hands.

Same rules apply in this thread as everyplace else.

If you want to point out an SFO on the GEC web site you may do so. But if it's not for a BF dealer member, leave the vendor's name out of it.

Just to clarify, DLT is a dealer member, aren't they?

They aren't on the dealer list. I'll check to see if they are supposed to be.

My mistake. They are listed under Eric's name. Made it harder for me to find. Thanks for making me look twice.

Thanks Frank. I generally try not to break forum rules. DLT kinda came out of nowhere this year but so far they're doing great things IMO.

Thank you! I really want a single blade 73 and I thought the the 74 look real close.

Hold out for a #73. It was one of GEC's first patterns and remains one of their best.

Of the several 73 patterns I have both single and double blade wobble is not an issue. The only 72 patterns I have are from the run this year and they seem to be fine also. Some folks have mentioned some of the earlier 72's had a little play but I can't speak for those.
Merry Christmas all,
Rick

Thanks all, I appreciate the input. 👍

Yes I've looked. All I've found in inventory are 2 blade versions

You could always buy a two blade jack and have someone remove the second blade, which shouldn't be a complicated job for those with the skill. There are quite a few forumites who would do it for you.

It looks like they'll have to update the production schedule soon! To my knowledge the only knife left on the list to finish up is the 74s.
I'm really looking forward to seeing when the 13s will be produced. Does anyone know of any other patterns that are supposed to be coming?

I think only GEC knows that Erik. But, it's always worth speculating...:D The 13s will I assume be the first run but then why not a run of 73s they're an iconic GEC knife and always appreciated, new bone would be welcome though. After that, high time the 56 Jack and Houndstooth got a revival, add to that more 33 Conductors,25 Drop-Point only run...More 38s in all forms.

After that, they can think about some new patterns or styles they've yet to attempt.

Whatever, there will be something to keep us all interested I'm sure :)

Yes to everything you mentioned, especially the drop-point 25's and 56's and 38's
