Lets talk GEC!

The shield doesn't quite work for me, halfway between a trilobite and an oak leaf(?).

However, I do appreciate the uniqueness/branding it lends this line of SFOs, and am happy for DLT. :)

A trilobite shield is something that you don't see often! :D The shield has some similarity to the one sometimes found on some Wards/Kutmaster knives.

I sure do like the way these are looking. Can't wait to have mine in hand.

I actually bought that knife just for the shield. I had it before Duncan and another forum member had it before me.

It's a nice change up from GEC's branded shields. I prefer plain classic shields. GEC's acorn and crest shields are two of my favorites from them.

I have a history of passing on knives only to regret it once they're unavailable . The 38 American whittler
Comes to mind. I can't even recall what my problem with the crest shield was.
Just looked at GEC's photos on the oiled bone mustang . Doesn't look too bad.

Here's my 38 with the crest shield and some others with very classic shields.

I don't like the cloud or Tidioute or Northfield shields. ...but I think the Tidioute shield looks better without any text.

Some of the new patterns we saw the last two years have been great.
But here's hoping that 2017 sees some of the early ones make a return, even some from circa 2013.
I would love to see the 64 swing guards make a return, for example.

Did the DLT 74 Snakewoods sell out in pre-order?
If so, just validates what I've been thinking for a while. They need more of the exotic woods... snake, osage.
Has there ever been an ironwood GEC?

I don't remember ever seeing them use ironwood. Surprising since it's native to the southwest US. Could be too hard on their tooling....? I wouldn't mind seeing some amboyna burl or even spalted maple or buckeye burl. Even C-Tek would be neat. I like the kinds of handles BRK uses. Seeing some of that stuff on a GEC would take it to a new level. I, for one wouldn't mind paying a premium to see that stuff. I know there's the naysayers who want to keep everything completely 'traditional' but I honestly think that if knifemakers had this stuff 120 years ago, they would have used it. Heck, micarta was probably the cutting edge of materials at one time.

Isn't it about time for the fixed blade 73's to start showing up for sale? I've looked in a couple of likely places and haven't found any.

Three days ago, Chris with GEC told me that the H731s would be going out "once they pass inspection". I would assume that they will be showing up to dealers next week.

I really enjoy seeing the different woods. I'm a bit surprised they haven't done some in iron wood, they have done some others that I would think would be similar to work with such as Palo Santo, Bocote, and Osage. I wonder if iron wood is more prone to splitting.

There have been a very small number of GECs made with Ironwood in the past, if I remember correctly. I cant remember exactly when or what they were (73's I think) but there have been a few. Not sure why they stopped either.

EDIT: Found 3 pcs listed with Ironwood- 2007 -73 Tidioute Factory test run.
