Lets talk GEC!

Well my maroon micarta Beer Scout is officially only the second knife to ever cut the heck out of my thumb when I wiped off the blade with a paper towel.

The first knife to ever do so was a new 2013 Spyderco Native 5 Forum Knife.

Clearly the sharpener at GEC put in some solid work on that knife. Well done.

I can relate 100% Donutsrule. As soon as I took my 2016 TC Barlow out of the tube to take a look I saw it had some packing grease on the blade. I took a pice of Paper Towle wiped it across the blade (a little to hard apparently lol) and I got that god awful feeling when you know you dun messed up and cut yourself but good.:( My first thought was hot dame they sure did pick up there sharpness out of the tube game on them puppys.

A while back I posted a problem with my #15 Navy Knife on this thread. The Old Barn Chestnut of the knife was so soft that a fingernail would dent it badly. After 3 months of pouch carry and daily use it looked like this.

I got some kind advice and Travman in particular gave me the following idea which he had done to fix his own Old Barn Chestnut with the same problem.

After careful sanding it looked like this:

Then with Travman's recommendation, I used a mixture of Tung Oil and Linseed Oil (3 coats with diminishing additions of White Spirit) to stabilise the wood and here is the finished article. Stabilised, hard, water repelling and I can trust it as an EDC without it self destructing. Looks good too!

Thank you Travman for your help in saving, improving and bringing back into rotation this beautiful knife!

POMSBZ, Looking good. I'm glad that process worked for you. It was my friend Martin that helped me when I did my knife. I'll let him know that he helped two people.

It looks good, well done!

Quick question from a relative noob to traditionals...does GEC ever revisit a pattern or model? For example, would they ever produce the #38 Grinling Whittler again? Or once they're done, they're done other than a SFO deal?

something pretty nice showed up in the mailbox this morning! Knife politics aside, I'd say it is a keeper

Looks great! I got myself all wrapped around that discussion also and did not pull the trigger on this. I did get a DLT jigged bone version. I wish now I had done both. Dumb:(

They revisit. Some patterns pretty often. Seems to depend, as it should, on how well they sell. I believe those went pretty well so you can bet they'll make a return .... eventually.

Are the only differences between the SFO Heartland Clip and the upcoming GEC Stallions the shield and blade etching (and obviously some cover materials)?

I asked a few pages back and there wasn't an answer, so I wanted to bump up my question again for more folks to see. Apologies if this is annoying. :)

I think you are right. But since no one has seen the others, no one knows for sure.
The heartland is satin finish. The others may be polished (I hope)
The satin probably shows off the shiny edge better.

That looks very nice, TYD450! I gotta ask - is it a pinchable open? Reason I'm asking is that the current regular UN-X-LD run has what looks to be the same blade, and cut swage. If they turn out to not be so grab-able, I might wait to see what the Tidioute version is like.

I can pinch it open. I wouldn't say it is the easiest pinch out there but definitely pinchable, for me.

GEC has been putting out some beautiful singl blades lately. I'm typically drawn to multi blade knives, but these recent 74s and 72s have really been enticing me.

It certainly looks very decent and I'm glad you were able to get it fixed up. Nevertheless, I have to say that I don't think GEC should be putting out working knives with such soft, pithy and possibly unstabilized wood in the first place. It doesn't seem well thought-out by them:confused:

How about the mark side? were you able to sand that down without compromising the inlet of the shield?

Regards, Will

Erik I agree with you, that latest single-blade is very desirable. The shield suits the frame and material very satisfyingly indeed.

Does anybody know what the bone option is?

I also agree on the new 74 style. I love that muskrat clip! I am so tempted to order a cocobolo one but very curious as to what jigged bone options will be.

The basic ebony version is calling me. I usually like all the bells and whistles, but that plain bolstered 74 clad in ebony looks so nice. I kind of wish they went shield less on that one.
I'm pretty sure I will be picking up a 74 or speaking out a lock less 73 in the very near future.
Harry isn't helping when he posts his splendid collection of 7# modeled knives.

X2 i can pinch mine as well:thumbup:

Thanks a lot Erik . Do I need to post an Enabling Picture for you ??? You know you need a 74 my friend !!!
I do too . I am hoping for the Jigged Autumn Gold Rod Hixby . We will see what happens. But I do need another 74 to make 2 of each 72's , 73's , 74's , and 83's.
Please post a picture when you get yours my friend .

Harry
