Lets talk GEC!

Very true. I see the SFO 78 was up on one of the dealers for reserve and it is already in standby mode.
Standby mode....meaning that it may not go ahead? I hope the #78s with the spear and pen, do get made. Perfect knife for me. I have one reserved.

Meaning it will indeed get made, but every one has been spoken for. However, it's possible one could become available, through return, or people not honoring their reservation.

Posting a second question separately (I get confused easily). I have a GEC tube where the label is starting to come off around the edges. Is there anything to remedy this? I am assuming there is not much that can be done and thinking I will wrap some plastic wrap around it to keep it from getting worse. Just for the record it is not the tube to the Elk 89 that I just posted about.

Is it peeling off at the corners? Like the label just isn't sticking to the tube any more? If so, you might try some double-sided tape; peel the corner of the label back a little, place a piece of tape on the tube underneath, stick the corner back down onto the tape, then carefully trim around the edge of the label and peel the excess tape off. Or just a little dab of Elmer's glue might do the trick.

It is worse at the corners and working down the sides. The label is starting to curl back. I might try Elmer's. I don't want to make a bad situation worse. On the other hand I am not sure how much it affects the value of the knife.

I can't imagine it would affect the value too much. Obviously people like to have the tube with the knife, but I'm not sure they'll be overly concerned with the tube being "mint."

I just received a GEC that has Cyclops stamped on it (Elk scales btw ). What is the significance of this? Wasn't it a predecessor to GEC? Thanks!

Doesn't Cyclops have something to do with GEC's stainless steel? I thought I saw mentioned a little while ago something about Cyclops Steel Works or something of a similar vein?

Here's a brief explanation posted a couple years ago in this thread by the late Bob Andrews of Old Hundred Collectibles, who was a GEC distributor:

Cyclops Works was the name of the now defunct steel mill where the GEC Factory is now located.

At some point, I'm not sure when, they stopped using the Cyclops stamp on their stainless knives. (Edited because I don't know what I'm talking about. :D)

Don't be too hard on yourself, when will this pattern get run again, ya know? I'm guessing the production numbers on the Calf Pen will be pretty low.

Before I order a 2nd, has , I want to get the first in hand to see if I really like it. I can see the micarta models in my future tho!

I hope they make enough Churchills that a person can wait and not have to "buy right now" like on some releases.

I never thought I would want this, but I too caved and now have one on order... definitely unique and will be my first GEC wharncliffe, liner lock, and one arm blade!

If that's the case, I don't think I knew it; maybe the Alzheimer's is kicking in. I thought all GEC branded (440C) were marked Cyclops or CIW.
My 2016 Navy knife has the Cyclops stamp. Can't check the #15 and #74 from last year right now without waking up my wife, but I'm pretty sure they both say Cyclops too. GEC is indeed in the old Cyclops Steel building.

I suppose - in a way - they did stop using the Cyclops stamp.....

...please GEC, make more stainless!

I'm sure you're right, Mike. To be honest, I couldn't tell you why I thought that was the case when I posted that earlier. Perhaps I'm the one with an undiagnosed neurological disorder. :D

I too thought that the Cyclop's had disappeared as well, about the time they abolished the Squirrel&Acorn blade etch and replaced it with the shield etch- a bad move in my view. I think my 15 from last year has a script tang stamp that says Great Easter Cutlery. At least the very cool Acorn shield remains. Their stainless is really nice, I just dream of an all stainless model with no brass liners...or at least NS liners:cool:

Thanks, Will
