Lets talk GEC!

Be still my beating heart, GEC just posted photos of cut slabs for the 81. It's beginning! I can't wait to see what the jigged bone colors will be.

Grrrrr, I keep checking in for Churchill progress pictures and they show slabs for the 81 instead . I am happy the Bull Moose is coming out though, it is going to allow for my wallet to take a break and prepare for the 78s and the Lionsteel Barlows at the end of the year. I like the 81 frame, just not the Bull Moose configuration, I really wish they had done a Stockman instead, but then my wallet would not have been happy at all...

I'd love for GEC to take another crack at an 81 stockman. The previous ones seemed off to me somehow, especially the clip blade. They've gotten better at blade shapes since then. I'd most love to see a copy of an old Schrade, right down to reddish/tan saw cut bone covers. But the moose is actually more useful to me right now.

I am definitely anxiously waiting on the Churchill, but, may be even more excited about the 81 Bull Moose. I thought that the Churchill would be up next as it shares the 35 frame, anyone think think that GEC will leapfrog the Churchill with the 81 or produce them together?

I think the Churchill will be up next after the Calf Pens because they are already working on the 35 frame. Obviously, I have no way of knowing but that's what I'm hoping for.

On the website, the Churchill is already listed as "in production". Looking forward to seeing these knives.

I have been looking forward to seeing the Churchill too, that "in production" of the Churchill has been on their site for a while, but, it is not a hyperlink and I figured that meant that it was on deck. I have seen a few posts that people are glad that one or another of the next knives on the schedule to save their wallet. I am excited for the next three builds 81, 35, and 78 and hope to get a couple covers of each, my wallet is scared right now. I love this thread for the excitement, speculation, and information of fellow members patiently awaiting GEC builds.

Although I'm lukewarm on the handle options of the Churchill, I'm pretty excited for it due to ideal (for me) blades.

Due to this excitement, I expect GEC to hold off on releasing them until they finish all of the 78s:)

LOL. I hope you're wrong, Ryan but it wouldn't surprise me.

Stainless knives are stamped Cyclops Steel Works and 1095 blades are stamped with Titusville Iron Works. Sometimes they are abbreviated, as in TIW.

I prefer the fuller 81 blades compared to the similarly sized Schrade stockman. Different strokes.
I agree on the fullness. What I mean is, the original 81 stockman clip blades strike me as less refined than their work now. I've made this to show what I mean:

On the top is the old clip. In the middle is the new one, and on the bottom is an overlay. You can see all sorts of subtle but really crucial changes they've made. The tip sweeps up higher to the midline of the knife. It looks like a bigger change than it is. It lets it have a slightly rounder belly, while also having a pointier, less stubby-looking tip. The angle of the plunge line has changed, and the angle of the bolsters has REALLY changed. On the Northfield at least, the pull got longer, and was raised a little.

These changes make the difference between a knife I don't care for, and a knife I very much like. That's something the old Schrades had all buttoned up, was their shapes. If GEC put the new blade on an 81 stockman, I'd prefer that.

I misunderstood your original post. I thought you were comparing GEC to Schrade.
I sorta was. I was saying their shape game was good, and GEC's was not out of the gate. What I dream of now is a GEC 81 stockman that looks like the Schrade Old Timer, but more luxurious. Real sawcut bone. Better finishing. And that lovely new clip. This is my version of a fantasy sports team.

Sorry guys. It was a pain in the neck to try and resize on my phone before so I waited to use my computer. Pretty beefy and has some weight to it. I actually am quite impressed although the screwdriver is too recessed to really be versatile.

Does anybody know why the razor blade on the #35 FF has this half moon cut out on the tip? Is that an easy open feature or a punch or something else.

Historically traditional slip joints have used the razor as a one hand opening using your pant leg on your jeans or work pants. I personally have owned only a few and do not use that feature.

Thanks for the insight NewBlades16, makes sense. The traditional equivalent of Emerson's wave feature, I suppose. Very cool knife!

For etymology's sake, I'm fond of using the older term "one arm" as opposed to "one hand" for these blades. Popularized after the civil war to meet the demand by men who still routinely used pocket knives, but couldn't open them due to a missing arm. I've read a post by a modern-day vet on BladeForum who uses them now.

They have one slab picture for the 35, but it's just a pre-dyed Bose for the yellow rose handles
