Lets talk GEC!

From Wikipedia,
The flag of Sicily.
The flag is characterized by the presence of the triskelion (trinacria) in its middle, the (winged) head of Medusa (Gorgon) and three wheat ears. The three bent legs allegedly represent the three points of the triangular shape of the island of Sicily, or the historical three valli of the island.[1]The present design became the official public flag of the Autonomous Region of Sicily on 4 January 2000, after the passing of an apposite law which advocates its use on public buildings, schools, city halls, and all the other places in which Sicily is represented.

I'm pretty sure Charlie's ancestors were Sicilian. The CC are his initials.

No 2018 GEC Rendezvous thread yet? Less than two months out. Got my hotel booked and really looking forward to it.

It seemed like people were just using the old thread. I'll be there Thursday and Friday.

I would like to hear about the rendezvous - what is it? Do you tour the factory?
Swap meet? Mubtley-peg with barlows?

It's lots of different things, but mainly it's a great time if you appreciate GEC knives.

Bill Howard, Sr and Jr, give tours of the production floor. It is great and offers so many insights, behind the scenes looks, and really shows the handmade nature of the knives that makes you appreciate the knives even more. One of the best parts is getting to meet the people who make the knives and run the company.

It is a meeting place (Rendezvous ;) ) for lots of extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic knife people. There are always incredible collections being displayed, and great knives being chicken eyed and coon fingered along with trading.

This year GEC is opening up the option for actual display tables, like at knife shows, which I'm really looking forward to greatly. I'm trying to make sure the club I go to, Allegheny Mountain Knife Club, has a table to spread the word about the club to knife people who might be in the area but not know about it. In the past the Queen show was the same weekend, but sadly that's a thing of the past.

There are also always great knives at the factory store, including the Rendezvous Special which is made for and only sold at the Rendezvous in small numbers.

Finally on Saturday there is a picnic for the employees of GEC that Rendezvous attendees can also get tickets to and attend. I've only been to it once, but it is one of the highlights of the whole thing for many who go.

As Gary has written!!
Gary, you've been paying attention!!:D

Forgive me for posting another hastily snapped photo, but these two came in the mail today and I figured I ought to share ‘em. :D

I’m happy to report that neither of these have the lazy/“mushy” action I experienced with the standard-run single-spearpoints I got. Both of these are nice and snappy, with pulls that are just right.

Somehow the "ancient" looks out of place perched on two modern Zip-Lock bags:rolleyes:

I was talking to a dealer (won't name him now) who said GEC was considering not pinning their shields anymore. Something about time and money much like stopping inletting shields in stag. Will someone who goes to the GEC Rendezvous as Bill Howard about this.

I will be at the Rendezvous this year and I’ll be sure to bring it up. I know there are some people over there that see what’s going on the forums at times. Not pinning shields would be a huge mistake and a step in the wrong direction.

Mr. Howard has always seemed to desire to “do things the way they used to be” not pinning shields doesn’t seem to fit that mantra.

As long as customers are willing to pay for a pinned shield, why not pin the shield? In my opinion, if Bill is trying to find ways to produce more knives or more affordable knives, leave the shield off. If buyers want to pay for a pinned shield, make those also.

That would be a shame. If true, maybe they should also consider changing their name to Good Eastern Cutlery.

Any dealers out there want to chime in?
