Lets talk GEC!

I'm shocked that so many prefer the single over the 2-blade. Singles are fine knives, but the 85 is especially well-suited for a 2-blade. It just feels right. At any rate, it's good to hear that we may see 85s done the line.

I just recently found a single bladed 85 after a long search. While I love it and it'll be staying in my rotation, it does feel a little thin in hand. While I almost always prefer a single blade, I'd be interested in trying out a two bladed model. Seems like it would 'fit'.

I'm surprised too, but despite the polling results, I'd be willing to be a run of 85s in any config would fly off the shelves. Make mine a 2-blade please.

Hey guys...I just finalized a trade for a 2-blade Northfield 77 Barlow. It'll be my first 77 and will definitely be a user. I've seen a few guys grind the tang on the coping blade to give it a more ergonomic feel while using the main blade. For those of you who own one...how do you feel about that mod?

I did a similar mod to my 35 Churchill and it did help a bit but it doesn't seem like the coping blade on the 77 sticks out as much as the sheepsfoot did on the 35. It also seems like it'd be more of an issue on the 35 because of the opposite end configuration. Thanks...

All the best!

I would recommend against it. I have a 77 two blade Barlow in my hand right now. I don’t see how the secondary blade would actually bother someone. It barely stick out. Maybe the tang of the secondary could feel sharp if you pressed your first finger into it. Lowering the kick on the secondary blade won’t change the fact that when closed the tang will stick up. If that bothers you, you can always move you fingers a little closer to the blade edge or perhaps a little further back. Only truly sunken tangs on knives that are designed with sunken tangs will prevent the tang from sticking up.

Also, if you grind down the tang then the spring won’t sit flush when closed. They are plenty of pictures where members have tried this mod and have messed up the way the blade sits when closed.

I also have a 2-blade 77 and haven't had any real discomfort using either blade yet. I've even used it for some whittling and didn't have any issues.

I did the mod to my Churchill, because the spine of the sheepfoot blade happened to hit a spot on the inside of my knuckle. It was almost painful, like it was pressing on a nerve. I decided that it was worth the risk of a slightly uneven spring, and it made the knife much more comfortable to use. I don't see much reason to do the same on a 77, unless it is really bothering you. I also notice that the kick on the coping blade is different, I don't know the term for it, but I see it on secondary blades sometimes, where the kick is below the well in the open position, making it much harder to file down.

Hi Hovan,

I did it, and it went ok, but I would recommend against it. Very difficult with the style tang. Doesn't help the grip as necessarily as on the 35. The spring will sit low.

While we are dreaming I would love to see a run of 85s with a razor variant available again.

I'd be in for one of those too! If only haha

They have old dates in the blade code so I'm guessing that they were leftover blades that they made into knives?

Mark do you know the story behind the run of 331313 - just 3 pieces?
edit - or are all of those in red documenting what had been left out of previous totals?
Dwight, I wondered the same thing about the 33's. I never saw anything about them. I assume the same as Norcaldude Norcaldude . I think all the red entries are parts knives.

Maybe so, looks like it would be difficult to make just two or three of a particular pattern only because the blades were there. I thought maybe they had left those in red out of previous years totals and were attempting to bring those up to date?

The Northfield 78 totals are missing except the 2 blade jigged bone. Very few non sfo limited handles. It's a bit of a pity but does make it fairer. Blue 48 and green 66 are the noticeable small number in handle material at 20 and 6 respectively.

Rob, Chris at GEC told me via email that the 78's totals were lost in a computer glitch. Shame, I really like to keep track of those numbers.
