Lets talk GEC!

I just noticed this at GEC:

WHAT’S IN PRODUCTION
#77 BARLOW (SFO COLLECTORKNIVES.NET) ■ #77 WASHINGTON JACK (SFO Charlie Campagna)

Any information on what the Washington jack will be like?

It will be awesome, of course!

Some quick pictures of my new #21 Bull Buster in comparison with a #23 frame:

Anyone have any idea what the 'smooth rose appaloosa camel bone' on the upcoming #77 Barlow is going to look like? Is it going to be pink? Spotty or solid? I can't seem to find any pictures of the stuff. I reserved one in it and one in African Blackwood... the saw cut bone appears to be on standby and the others aren't that appealing to me. Since I missed out on the TC barlows, I definitely want two of these. Glad the frame is a bit larger. I personally think they look great. Just wondering if I'm going to end up with a pink knife.

I have one preordered in that bone as well and am curious as to what it will look like. I am thinking it will be more of a mottled brown/white with some rose undertones? Whatever it ends up being I feel it will have a vintage flavor to it. Hoping anyways!

This is the picture I provided them as to what color bone was desired.

I have to admit, with forum knife, the Washington Jack, and the 77 Nf barlow all around the corner I am getting excited. A little nervous I may over spend, but excited.

What is UN-X-LD? I see it on Northfields, but I've never heard what it means.

GEC has taken most (all?) of their brands from earlier, deceased, companies: Tidioute Cutlery, Northfield, Cyclops Steel. Heck, even the name Great Eastern may have been borrowed from somewhere else. I believe this is more than marketing, and represents an honest effort to honor the manufacturing and cutlery heritage of Pennsylvania and the Northeast.

UN-X-LD was an old trademark that I have seen on very old knives, and other products, some dating back to the 19th century. UN-X-LD was used on knives, but also on every manner of product. It is sort of like Acme, or A-1, in that you will see it attached to all sorts of things.

I would be interested in photos and history of the UN-X-LD brand on pre-GEC knives. Can any of our historians help me out?

From what I've read, UN-X-LD is an abbreviation for 'unexcelled', meaning none better. They certainly live up to that in my opinion!

The history is fully explained in the GEC book Scott, and makes very interesting reading I think

I'm new to this game, but I can't wait to get my hands on a "true" GEC. Closest I have is a Northwoods Fremont, which I believe is made by GEC. I'm on the waitlist for the #77 Barlow and am actively seeking a Charlow.

bleh - the Northwoods Fremont is indeed made by GEC and is based upon the #79 Workhorse frame. It is one of my favorites your Calico Bone Fremont looks to be a fine example.

I just saw these new 99s as well. I don't have any familiarity with the 99 frame, but I've always liked the looks of it. I think it could be a real nice little lock back, particularly the wharncliffe. While I'm compelled by the bone, I wonder if they'll do more knifebrite...or may even micarta. I've been wanting a knifebrite for awhile :)
