Life after titanium framelock flippers

I'm not bored of them, and some are still trickling across the Border.

You know, for knife enthusiasts, some of you guys get bored of knives really fast! :D
See threads like this one fairly often, or "I'm burning out on the hobby," "I think I have enough knives now," "When will the (insert some form of knife description/category) fad be over"...
Sorry if these types of threads are boring you!:D

I will say, I don't think this thread falls into the category of "I'm burning out on the hobby" or "I think I have enough knives now."

All the people who posted here and don't like frame lock flippers still want knives, they just want different knives. We're actually living in a knife world where there are more options than ever (like the ones I listed) but it's hard to ignore the slab-sided, gray elephant in the room: there are a buttload of titanium frame lock flippers out there.

But all those different knives are all around us.
I recently got a Fox Knives Nuragus (Pattada pattern), which has no lock at all.
It is a friction folder with a 4 inch blade, and pointy as hell.
The handle scales are cattle horn, no liners.

The non-flipper, non-overbuilt, non-titanium knives have kept being produced all along, both old styles and modern ones. :)

Im back where I started. I want simple, effective liner locks, easy to disassemble, with washers so no crud can get into the bearing and I want steel that is easy to sharpen on the fly.

In short. Emerson Knives.

Do you prefer them imported or exported?

I'm not sick of them, but I don't particularly care for them. Mostly because of the general repetitiveness of them.

That about sums it up for me. I have one slab sided gray elephant, and it lives in a drawer. I think the Ti framelock apathy I have is what keeps me from pulling the trigger on two knives that in theory I would like to own - a Norseman and a full size manual Stitch.

But, people seem to love them - you see sales threads here where people are selling 8 marginally genetically different Ti folders. So people who are into them are into them. It's like the consumer version of homophily, which there must be an actual name for. We buy what we like, and sometimes we keep buying the same thing we like over and over.

I certainly respect that people's taste change. it happens all the time. I feel the need to try something different every once in awhile. Frame locks (flippers aside) are honestly my goto lock mechanism, but my last two knives were liner lock and an Axis. I think that is what we are talking about here. Fad is a bit strong. I have seen Framelock [flippers] referred to as a fad by many people here but these are two elements of knives that are here to stay in terms of knives. They are no more a fad than the lockback and the nail nick or the liner lock and the thumbstud.

Or you can become a grail searcher like me, for the greatest fixed blade EDC :) There are always new interesting developments in this hobby. The more I use knives, and the older I get, the more appreciation I have for fixed EDC. I'm lucky however, since I don't use a flipper as a fidget spinner, so that whole aspect of flippers is moot for me. I am glad I'm not addicted to flipping

I would like to see more small, but useful EDC fixed blades from the big companies. But there are a lot of customs in that realm that are a great value!

Manufacturers make what people want, and what sells. There are a plethora of other designs out there other than TI frame locks. That being said, there is nothing wrong with innovation, and new designs. Do you have to live in Canada?

My only gripe about them is that the locks seem to often wear out fast.

My biggest problem with ti frame/linerlocks is that they seem to be one of the locks most prone to wearing out and developing play. Unfortunately carburization a là CRk hasn’t become popular. Luckily steel lockbar inserts save the day!

Yes, the one potential weakness of a TI framelock is the lockbar wearing out. I have never had this occur on any of mine, but manufacturers like ZT, and even Viper, and others are addressing that. Again, I don't see it as a problem.

The Axis lock was a great innovation, so I am sure there is something else down the pike that will be available that is different. There are some interesting mechanisms out there on some custom folders for sure that haven't trickled down yet to the bigger companies.

I like flippers. I like front flippers. I like (good) liner locks. I like (good) button locks. I like compression locks. I like holes. I like (thumb) studs. I like turtles. I look forward to trying other locks and deployment devices.

I would like to see more expertly made washer-based TFF, but I don’t resent bearings either.

Hooray for Everything!

I got lucky and got an older shamwari on pb washers. The boker titanium exskelibur 1 is another great front flipper on washers.
